[00:00:01] Hello Superstars, my name is Aaron. I'll take a number 11 combo, hold the sauce and onions, and this is SuperPod Saga.

[00:00:20] Welcome! I'm your host Aaron. Have a seat. Thanks for joining us once again.

[00:00:24] For any first-time listeners, this is the podcast where each week we discuss a different video game topic with different guests.

[00:00:31] This week's topic is

[00:00:34] the best combat systems in games or our favorite combat systems. Before we get to that, let's introduce the guests.

[00:00:40] I have both Jake and Cameron of the pre-order bonus podcast. Hello fellas. Hello

[00:00:47] Pretty good pretty good. I think I'm getting sick, but I mean that's just a day off work, I guess so no too worried about it

[00:00:56] That's just what happens when you

[00:00:58] You know you want to do anything you just get sick

[00:01:00] I know I don't know. That's life. Whenever I get sick. I tend to just like sleep for an entire day

[00:01:06] I'll put on Talladega Nights in the background and then just fall asleep. That's Talladega Nights, I swear to god.

[00:01:12] It's on like every channel whenever I'm sick, and I love it. It's my

[00:01:16] comfort movie. Talladega has healing powers.

[00:01:20] There's something there though that movie is always on isn't it?

[00:01:24] I feel like it is. What what deal did they get man? It has a really low licensing costs from

[00:01:30] whatever the studio is.

[00:01:32] And it's just good man

[00:01:35] Quick let's pry out that knife with this other knife, and then they're digging around in his life.

[00:01:39] Oh you get a nerve!

[00:01:42] Dude I'm squeamish every time I see that part.

[00:01:45] Don't you put that evil on me Ricky Bobby.

[00:01:48] Ricky Bobby.

[00:01:51] Well hell yeah the fellas go ahead take turns introducing your it sorry introducing

[00:01:58] yourselves and your podcast and talk about any shows you like maybe talk about your your favorites

[00:02:03] your favorite fast-food french fries

[00:02:07] Yeah

[00:02:10] That's a tough one. Yeah, so I am Jake one half of the pre-order bonus podcast.

[00:02:17] I don't know today has been insane. So I feel like a very old man in a creaky body. I've been running around

[00:02:24] all day and

[00:02:26] Yeah, we can just leave that in the past though because we're gonna talk about fast-food french fries for a little bit

[00:02:31] So Cameron and I we both live in Utah and

[00:02:35] We're not originally from Utah. We're both originally from Washington State and something if you don't know much about Utah

[00:02:40] I know they are really

[00:02:43] They're really into what what's called fast casual dining

[00:02:48] It's like it's it's not quite a fast-food restaurant, but it's not quite a nice sit-down

[00:02:55] Experience the food is good. Don't get me wrong, but everybody

[00:02:58] Has a lot like a different take on fries and there's a lot of like double fried fries going on the hell oh

[00:03:05] Dude, it's good

[00:03:08] And so I would I'm gonna go off the beaten path a little bit here

[00:03:12] I'm not gonna pick like a main fast-food franchise, but my favorite fries recently is this place called chomberger in Provo

[00:03:19] So it's just super crunchy on the outside. We're talking like what are they called shoes shoestring shoelace fries?

[00:03:26] Yeah, I'm trying to outside but there's

[00:03:29] It's nice and soft and hot on the inside and the thing that gets it for me is the perfect amount of salt

[00:03:35] Because I don't want to be munching on salt crystals, right?

[00:03:39] But I want something to enhance all the grease that I'm ingesting in chomberger. Does it just

[00:03:46] Chomberger Jake had to go the artisan fry route

[00:03:49] But I mean, you know where we live it is we are the king of fast casual

[00:03:54] You can look it up king of fast casual thing. Yeah

[00:03:58] Yeah, I'll introduce myself. I'm Cameron. I'll second half of the pre-order bonus podcast

[00:04:05] Also live in Utah next to Jake I actually work in the gaming industry I work for bungee cool

[00:04:10] I'm a data engineer

[00:04:12] Don't really work directly on the game. Although I will have something

[00:04:17] In the final shape can't say what it is

[00:04:21] Something that is going gonna be directly in the game

[00:04:24] So yeah

[00:04:25] Anyway that that makes it tough sometimes have a podcast because you can't talk about certain things

[00:04:30] but I can say I work for bungee and

[00:04:32] Yeah favorite fast food fry. I'm just gonna go if we're just going from like the mainstay

[00:04:37] You know Sonic in and out

[00:04:40] McDonald's Burger King one of those

[00:04:43] Honestly, it's just gotta go to Mickey D's McDonald's, you know, just a classic

[00:04:48] Classic fry good I just you know, it's not amazing but it's the same every time it's consistent

[00:04:55] It's a dependable fry right like, you know

[00:04:58] My favorite order at McDonald's honestly just a regular hamburger and a large fry died. Dr. Butler

[00:05:04] I'm good to go

[00:05:05] You know, I like it do when you get when you get like the perfect McDonald's front

[00:05:10] Holy shit when you get the perfect McDonald's fries

[00:05:13] God damn, they're so like golden and like hot you're like the snap whenever you take a bite

[00:05:18] I don't know why I did this cuz you're taking a bite. You're not like breaking it

[00:05:22] I mean sometimes although I'm gonna consider doing that now

[00:05:27] I'll feel like really no dip with the McDonald's fries. I don't catch up those things. That's not good with McDonald's fries

[00:05:34] It's like solo you gotta eat those solo

[00:05:38] My dad whenever we went to McDonald's as a kid

[00:05:40] He would always I don't know if anybody else's parents do this

[00:05:43] But he would he would pour some pepper in his ketchup some like black pepper in his ketchup. Okay, I

[00:05:49] Listeners leave a comment

[00:05:52] Another fun fact about french fries and Utah Utah's home of the fry sauce. Yeah

[00:05:58] Oh the fries. Okay. Yeah, so the mayo and the ketchup

[00:06:02] Mixed together sometimes a little hot sauce in there sometimes a little barbecue sauce

[00:06:08] Sometimes some pickle juice to sometimes some pickle juice

[00:06:12] You know, we got a good fry game over here

[00:06:15] I'm having a hard we may not offer much

[00:06:20] I'm having a hard time picking my favorite fry. So in the Midwest, there's a chain of restaurants called Culver's and

[00:06:29] They have

[00:06:31] They have like the best crinkle fries like they're so

[00:06:35] So crispy and like like I don't crinkly I guess the best way to explain it

[00:06:40] But yeah, they're really good or maybe the KFC fries like if they're actually fresh. They're

[00:06:49] No, I haven't actually had KFC in a long time man, they're good you got to try them

[00:06:56] Just get the fries. I think they're like maybe a buck. They have to be like a buck 50

[00:07:03] So what you talking there like a bucket of chicken and then you get the fries with that

[00:07:07] You can get like tenders or or if you're like Iowa and you have the KFC Taco Bell combo building

[00:07:14] You can get like a chalupa or some shit and then get a separate fry and a Baja blast because like sometimes I just

[00:07:20] Want to be a saucy motherfucker and get a taco and fries

[00:07:27] Oh my gosh fast food is so good

[00:07:32] Happens we got to move on. Oh

[00:07:35] This just became the French

[00:07:37] Well now I'm thinking about french fries critically

[00:07:42] You you mentioned snapping the fry in half and I'm like

[00:07:46] I'm gonna look like a total snob

[00:07:48] But what if I went to the next restaurant and I snapped the front half and I looked inside and I'm trying to ratio

[00:07:54] Like okay the crispy crunchy out. I've got a little dough pad you're writing on to tensile strength not good

[00:08:03] Had like the french fries that are made out of mashed potatoes

[00:08:08] Okay, so you take the mashed potato and you put it in like a ball and then you like deep fry the ball

[00:08:14] And then you bite into it

[00:08:17] It's like a fry texture on the outside with like the creamy smoothness of the mash

[00:08:22] Inside you like get a little ranch dipping sauce

[00:08:27] Dude where do you get that?

[00:08:29] Holy cow, you kind of got it. You got to make it you make it with air fry that reminds me of

[00:08:35] there reminds me of a croquet which is like just like a

[00:08:39] deep-fried mashed potatoes basically like breaded deep-fried mashed potatoes

[00:08:44] Mm-hmm. Those are good as hell. Those are good

[00:08:48] I'm gonna have to do some cooking after this episode

[00:08:51] Well for the listeners besides besides your favorite potato dish

[00:08:55] Tell them all about your show where they can find it if they need to you can plug on any socials or anything else to

[00:09:03] Anything like that. Yeah, we're pretty bonus podcasts. You can find us podcast services everywhere except for Google which is now gone

[00:09:11] rip Google podcasts rip

[00:09:15] But yeah Spotify Apple podcasts

[00:09:18] You know all those third-party

[00:09:21] Podcast services you can find us on Twitter at pre-order cast

[00:09:25] yeah, been doing it once a week and kind of our format is

[00:09:29] we basically we try and normally do like a game a week ish that usually ends up being like

[00:09:37] every other week and then we'll have different episodes and then we

[00:09:40] are our format is we do these four categories where we all dive into

[00:09:45] This narrative mechanics game play loop and industry impact of every game

[00:09:51] We don't necessarily

[00:09:53] We'll go way back in the backlog like a couple weeks ago. We did Wolfenstein the order

[00:09:56] So we're doing like oldies and it will also do really new stuff if we're really on the ball with something

[00:10:01] So yeah, that's fun. I've been doing it for a few years now probably four years Jake whole four years been a while

[00:10:07] Yeah, nice

[00:10:09] Glad to see it four years. Damn

[00:10:11] Well, yeah before we before we get to that

[00:10:14] Before we before we get to our our picks for the topic will

[00:10:18] Take a short break jam to some tunes and then we'll do the discord QA

[00:10:24] I was just saying I was driving back from dropping my wife off at the airport

[00:10:48] My six-year-old had to pee in the middle of rush hour. I was like

[00:10:56] Yeah, she did

[00:10:58] Let's give him a cut. So I

[00:11:00] Actually, I was like listen how bad you got to pee? He's like dad

[00:11:03] I got to pee pretty bad. I was like guys is there a bottle in this car and they're like why and I was like if

[00:11:09] There's a car

[00:11:11] You can pee it

[00:11:14] Yeah, if you got eyes lit up with like curiosity like ooh, ooh

[00:11:18] Wait, is this a new option for a bathroom? And I'm like don't this isn't permanent

[00:11:24] Probability of missing is very you gotta write 9-1-1 on the side of the bottle

[00:11:30] So they know it's only for emergencies or something

[00:11:34] I should but thankfully no we were able to pull off to a gas station first gas station

[00:11:39] We went to bathrooms were closed. I was like dude. No not a lap. Why I got a kindergartener that needs to pee

[00:11:45] He's like and the guys felt awful. He's like, I'll just go up the road. There's a 7-eleven. So

[00:11:49] We made it

[00:11:52] But barely why would you close a bathroom? We're back. Hello. We're back everybody from that small tiny break

[00:11:58] Yeah, yeah, so the segment of the show discord Q&A I asked a discord a question related to the topic

[00:12:05] They they say things about the topic. I read them on the show. That's the that's that's the segments

[00:12:10] So I asked everybody you what are some of your favorite combat systems and video games?

[00:12:13] It can be turn-based tactics action based anything at all

[00:12:18] Matt aka stormageddon right away says for me

[00:12:21] My number one is always stylish action combat games like devil may cry

[00:12:26] I've been at a hi-fi rush and the like love how showy and over top they are and so fun to play. I agree

[00:12:32] Yes, I love that. They they reward you very handsomely for not just button mashing away

[00:12:38] Those those are some very good picks man. Thank you. Yeah, that's awesome. Matt is awesome

[00:12:43] I love Matt hi-fi rush. What a great pick in there. Let's see JB says there's a combat system

[00:12:47] I love that. I haven't really seen used very often. It's from Mega Man battle network games

[00:12:52] It's a sort of deck-building real-time positional skill shot system. It had me absolutely captivated

[00:12:58] The only other game I've seen that used was one step from Eden. That's right. Well, I am NOT familiar with this

[00:13:03] Oh, I think I might have to check this out. Oh man. Okay, so I'll bring it down for you real fast

[00:13:09] So there's yeah, I'm trying to think of like what the grid size is

[00:13:12] It's like what three six nine twelve fifteen eighteen. It's like a three by eighteen grid

[00:13:17] So there's your space on one side the enemy space on the other side and

[00:13:22] it's just you playing as some Mega Man and

[00:13:27] Was it you you have like a normal attack, which is just like his mega buster

[00:13:30] You just do like teeny weeny amounts of damage with that

[00:13:33] Like the big damage you do is with what are called like chips and they'll have attacks on them like a sword or

[00:13:39] cannon or like a bomb or something like that and you

[00:13:43] in between turns you

[00:13:47] load up your

[00:13:48] folder or tray or whatever it's called with different chips and then

[00:13:52] Yeah, it's awesome

[00:13:54] Interesting is it that grid system reminds me of I can fell have you played I can fell I have it

[00:13:59] How do you how do you spell it? I'm gonna look it up. Oh wait. Oh

[00:14:04] Yeah, that's like the wizard school, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah

[00:14:09] Maybe not that one is pretty turn-based grid

[00:14:12] It's kind of tactile but there's not like a lot of environment to hide behind or utilize

[00:14:17] tactics light, right? Yeah

[00:14:19] Yeah, yeah that was on game pass with a long time ago. It's a great one. Yeah, it's a cool game

[00:14:25] Okay, it's probably not even like that combat system. I'm just trying to approximate

[00:14:30] It looks pretty damn similar to it

[00:14:33] Except like it's uh, I like that combat a lot in Mega Man. It's it's like all real-time and stuff. There's like

[00:14:40] There's a bar that fills up during combat where like if you push L or R

[00:14:43] It'll stop time for a minute and you can load in some cards and then and then go along but

[00:14:48] Hmm. Yeah, it's all just zip around the grid and then pow pow pow away at enemies and stuff

[00:14:54] The Cthusiast Jeff a great username when I was younger

[00:14:57] I loved turn based Final Fantasy 9 and here is a might and magic 3 are my favorite even that system

[00:15:04] Now I love action based so Skyrim Borderlands

[00:15:08] Red Dead Redemption 2 are my go-to for action shout out to Final Fantasy 9. Yeah, my favorite Final Fantasy 2

[00:15:19] Just like just a spot in my heart for Final Fantasy 9 dude, like

[00:15:24] They had I think it's the most

[00:15:27] Fantasiest of the Final Fantasy games if that makes sense. It's got

[00:15:32] You know the Knights and the Wizards and yeah, I mean I

[00:15:36] Love turn based combat. So you're you're speaking my language

[00:15:41] Skyrim interesting choice on here. I gotta say

[00:15:44] Not not bad combat. I think at the time like way

[00:15:50] It still holds up I think but it is it's very unique. Yeah, it's got that Bethesda jank to it for sure

[00:15:56] definitely not as janky as

[00:15:58] As like what's the third one Morrowind and like oblivion used to be those

[00:16:04] Those felt very stiff, especially Morrowind that was very stiff

[00:16:12] Who's next real Dave Jackson he says Metal Gear Rising revensions

[00:16:17] Is one of the best action systems ever made for turn based got to go with Baldur's Gate

[00:16:22] I agree, but I'll gear rising has that one sweet thing

[00:16:26] You can do where you like stop time for a second and you just go

[00:16:29] Real fast and you slice the piss out of the enemy and then they just explode. Oh my god

[00:16:34] They'd rip out their heart and shit

[00:16:36] man, yeah that it's so good did I I recently played that for the first time and I gotta say

[00:16:43] Not nothing can prepare you for that game

[00:16:47] Absolutely nothing can compare you the combat or the boss

[00:16:52] Yeah, that's the game Jake where our number one most jacked

[00:16:56] Video game character comes from was that correct?

[00:16:59] See senator Armstrong was we did a mini episode on the top ten most jacked video game characters

[00:17:05] I need to get this loaded up right now. I want to see who number one senator Armstrong was up there because

[00:17:16] Did I just the part is hell no, man

[00:17:19] Did the part that sent me to space was when you you're doing that cutscene and then he turns around and then he ducks

[00:17:25] Over and his head is like between his knees and he's looking at you. I

[00:17:30] Don't know if that is scarred in my mind forever. I'm like

[00:17:35] He has recently been topped there is a new number one just everybody knows

[00:17:40] Dio from Final Fantasy 7 rebirth no one more jack than he is

[00:17:47] We might have to revisit that list because yeah do came out

[00:17:51] Cameron I were both playing that and then Cameron sends me a text and he's like have you seen do yet?

[00:17:55] I was like, I haven't and then I saw do and then I texted him

[00:17:59] I was like, oh, yeah, this is the kind of stuff that we think about

[00:18:03] When did this episode come out? I'm scrolling like a motherfucker. They've been a patreon episode

[00:18:13] You have an episode on Kirby in the forgotten lands I just always I didn't just start playing I'm about to the end

[00:18:19] I'd love that game so much. I did I love that one

[00:18:23] All right back on track. Let's see. Is this me? Oh my gosh little fluffy. I'm gonna have to apologize

[00:18:28] I don't know if it would be considered a mechanic or if this is even a term

[00:18:33] But a good bloody hell action slasher like Dynasty Warriors will always be my favorite style

[00:18:38] I also think it lends to my love of auto shooter

[00:18:41] Roguelike games where it's a lot of mowing down huge waves of enemies. I see them

[00:18:45] I'm apologizing because I haven't played Dynasty Warriors. I played games like this and

[00:18:51] but I got I agree that there's a lot of satisfaction in just being able to just

[00:18:56] Just go wild and just there are hordes coming at you and they've got nothing on you

[00:19:01] So I agree in that regard. I love that kind of style or that design. I kind of reminds me of

[00:19:08] Vermintide, oh, yeah

[00:19:11] Okay, so in Vermintide when like the enemy hordes come and you're literally just like

[00:19:19] Sloshing

[00:19:21] That's a good that's a good term. I like that. It's very satisfying. Yeah

[00:19:26] Okay. Yeah, I could see that

[00:19:28] Ryan player one

[00:19:30] Says the combat systems and games like Hades and Returnal just grabbed me in a way

[00:19:34] I can't explain that fast-paced reflexive comment with a lot of depth is some of the best in gaming whatever game does it

[00:19:40] Right. I can't put it down. I mean, yeah, you can't

[00:19:43] In terms of like an action combat like

[00:19:47] hard to argue those are two and

[00:19:50] two

[00:19:51] Roguelikes as well. So

[00:19:54] Interesting there, but yeah Hades combat so good

[00:19:59] Returnal both of these games are so hard

[00:20:01] I haven't even finished either of them because I just kind of hit up against a wall

[00:20:06] I need to just hunker down and buy a PS 5 so I can play Returnal finally or get a PC that can handle the goddamn

[00:20:12] Game it's on PC. Isn't it? Yeah, it is now

[00:20:17] It's pretty well optimized I mean 1080p it's got

[00:20:22] Probably like a bajillion BLSS bells and whistles and stuff. So

[00:20:27] Kevin dot demo he says God of War Ragnarok absolutely nailed it for me

[00:20:32] There's such a fine line between unrefined slash button mash II and two new wants to frustrating that this built on the

[00:20:39] This built on the foundation God of War 2018

[00:20:41] It built perfectly the demands intense and engagement from the player while still feeling smooth natural and satisfying so good

[00:20:48] I've never played it but fuck does it look cool?

[00:20:51] Especially with that like axe throwing shit where you throw it and then just I'm sorry back

[00:20:55] That's that's sweet shit. There's a lot of flair in those games for sure

[00:20:59] And I actually think Kevin dot demo says it super well

[00:21:02] There's such a fine line between being unrefined button mashing and two new Austin frustrating. That's a hard hard

[00:21:09] Gap between those two ends of the spectrum. I think to really nail

[00:21:13] I think in the the roguelike mode that they released recently they actually

[00:21:19] Really hone in this combat system like to a really fine

[00:21:24] Fine fine like sharp points

[00:21:27] It actually felt a lot better in that I can't remember what that new rogue like it's got was a free update for God of War

[00:21:33] I know but Jake and I actually have a contrarian opinion on though on this one

[00:21:38] We do we both thought that it was

[00:21:40] Too much like there was too much going on and right now look at the whole game

[00:21:46] Or just like that rogue like thing from a combat system perspective like just in the combat in general just like

[00:21:53] Obviously very well executed for sure, but it's a lot and at times it just feels like a

[00:22:01] Little bit. Yeah, I just felt like too much anyway

[00:22:04] Yeah, I guess to elaborate on our opinion there. I know we are we're pretty contrarian here. It's

[00:22:10] It's a shame because it's really hard to evolve button schemes

[00:22:14] I feel like on controllers to make to include more buttons and sometimes when a game has a

[00:22:20] Ton of combat options the way to access those is through things like weapon wheels, right?

[00:22:25] and if you want to access certain combos or to you know execute certain commands you have to be super fluid with how you're

[00:22:33] managing menus essentially and how you work the muscle memory with button mapping on a gamepad and

[00:22:40] That is extremely tall order and it didn't quite land for us for Ragnarok

[00:22:45] I think it actually worked better for me in God of War 2018 because there weren't as many combos available to you

[00:22:53] Is the combat in that game play or like in those two games? There should does that play more like

[00:22:59] Like it like a Dark Souls kind of game where like each attack has like a weight to it

[00:23:04] Or does it play more like?

[00:23:06] Like a devil may cry or something like that. I

[00:23:10] Think it's sort of in between those it's I do think it does a good job of kind of marking its own territory

[00:23:18] In terms of combat

[00:23:20] but

[00:23:22] And again, we're like very contrary on us because I think

[00:23:25] From a production standpoint probably no better combat in any game from a production standpoint

[00:23:30] But from just like a I think we'll get deeper into this but for me to be the best

[00:23:35] I think you have to be simple but nuanced

[00:23:38] Anyway, oh yeah

[00:23:41] next up

[00:23:43] Jared from play along pod just rolled credits on sifu the other day and once you can get into a rhythm with attacking parting

[00:23:50] paring dodging and blocking

[00:23:52] All were able to throw weapons that enemies kept in midair and continue to beat

[00:23:57] The crap out of them is so satisfying. So

[00:24:01] dude sifu man, I forgot about sifu, but sifu is

[00:24:05] So good

[00:24:08] Like and sifu I think sifu nails what I just mentioned which is

[00:24:13] Simple on the surface like you really only have a

[00:24:17] Few different buttons. Although you have like technically like six different blocking buttons

[00:24:22] But new want but extremely nuanced like deeply nuanced and like sometimes very challenging sometimes frustrating ways, but man see who

[00:24:31] So good and the art style our direction my game is off the charts

[00:24:35] I need to play that one too man. That's another one that I it's gonna be flown underneath my radar

[00:24:40] Yeah, that's another one. It actually just recently came to Xbox but it was

[00:24:45] I think I want that was like an epic game store and

[00:24:49] PlayStation

[00:24:50] Initial launch if I remember correctly. Oh

[00:24:54] Yes, holy year actually holy shit. They came to switch before it came to Xbox. That's

[00:25:00] nuts

[00:25:01] dang

[00:25:03] Dude, yeah, I love sifu and

[00:25:07] Although I didn't beat sifu until they released

[00:25:11] Whatever mode it was training wheel mode

[00:25:16] Because that combat is amazing but it is extremely punishing I feel like sifu I

[00:25:23] Absolutely agree here with Jared Jared's great too. I really like Jared

[00:25:26] There's a high skill floor

[00:25:29] But once you figure it out and you start chaining things together

[00:25:33] It feels amazing once you get that muscle memory figured out that it's clean. That reminds me of a

[00:25:39] One of my picks that I'm not gonna spoil all uh

[00:25:42] We'll talk about that in a little bit

[00:25:44] Anubis hero says fallout vats with crit builds watching body parts fly off in slow-mo is the best

[00:25:54] The the I

[00:25:56] Love that you said this or how you said this but I have to apologize because the the die has rolled

[00:26:02] Unfavorably, this is a game that I haven't played

[00:26:05] But I can attest to if you're in a combat mode where you can watch body parts fly off

[00:26:11] Yeah

[00:26:12] That is super sad

[00:26:13] I think it's always really rewarding when visually you get that kind of response of like I did something amazing here man

[00:26:20] yeah, I

[00:26:21] Knew this hero just if you like to watch body parts fly off make sure you go play sniper. Oh, yes

[00:26:29] Yes with those testicle shots and like the

[00:26:35] Watch body parts explode in slow motion like yeah, that's basically what that game

[00:26:40] It's like like vats on bath salts, man. Well, it's

[00:26:46] Yeah, that's is cool cuz it's like

[00:26:49] What it's another one where they had time stops and then

[00:26:53] Yeah, you can just aim right for the head and just pop off like 14 shots and they explode but

[00:27:00] Yeah, man. I forgot all about sniper elite

[00:27:02] Yeah, those were so fun to just goof around and shoot everybody in the balls and just like he

[00:27:08] latter

[00:27:12] The new ones pretty good and it's still on game pass

[00:27:16] Oh

[00:27:17] Okay, how many of those are there? There are several right? I think there's four main line ones

[00:27:23] But there might be more like offshoots googling it as we speak. That's that's my shtick on this show

[00:27:29] I gotta look up everything just cut hole shit

[00:27:34] For no, yeah one two three five. Well at least sniper elite five is on game

[00:27:39] Oh, that's why I meant sniper elite five. That's the oh, no, sir. Yeah five is the one that's on game pass, right?

[00:27:44] There's also

[00:27:45] Zombie army, whatever. No, we're not counting those. Yeah, there's five sniper elites. We're not counting the zombie shit. Yeah

[00:27:51] I was mistake. Yes, I believe five is the one that's like where they finally get to

[00:27:56] Like the invasion of Normandy campaign. So you like play through that? Oh interesting

[00:28:03] Nice, dude take out those Nazi nuts

[00:28:07] Speaking of Nazi nuts judge bread. He says gotta throw gonna throw a curveball and shut up

[00:28:13] Shut up Mario ace tennis aces on the switch. I was slow to them. Sorry

[00:28:18] That was funny all the different shot types of meters made the matches feel almost like a fighting game in a way

[00:28:24] Made the game really fun. I mean

[00:28:27] Yeah, it is kind of cool for a tennis game to have like just like a bajillion different

[00:28:32] I guess shot types and all that stuff. I yeah kudos to you

[00:28:36] Tommy for yeah tossing a curveball right in there and throw me completely the hell off

[00:28:43] What's the tennis term for curveball I like that, uh

[00:28:48] Something something shot. I'm looking it up again

[00:28:52] Hey, what are you doing that Andre shot was time if Andre is listening to this this one's for you, buddy

[00:28:59] I'm looking it up right now

[00:29:01] slice slice serve I guess

[00:29:04] We're to Google I learned that from Mario tennis. I should have known that

[00:29:07] No

[00:29:09] Mad from the retro wild lands. I actually really enjoyed the combat system in the Final Fantasy

[00:29:14] 13 I like to signing my party specific roles and combat and then switching them on the fly

[00:29:19] Real time to match the situation or play the weakest absurd monster

[00:29:22] It was fighting battle was fast-paced and you really had to pay attention to what's going on

[00:29:26] But it was really fun and even pretty deep if you dive into it 13 is the MMO, right?

[00:29:33] No, it's 14 13 is a controversial pick. Yeah with the people have strong opinions on 13, right?

[00:29:40] Oh, it's got this it's got everything you could ever need in 13

[00:29:43] You got crystals summons that turn into like motorcycles and dune buggies and shit

[00:29:48] old wizard men on bridges

[00:29:53] Is this is this the lady Final Fantasy where you're all ladies no, let's oh no, that's 10. Yes 10 to

[00:30:01] 13 has

[00:30:02] Snow what's your name lightning? Yes snow and lightning. Got it. Yeah, I actually never played 13

[00:30:08] That's one of the few Final Fantasy's I never played

[00:30:11] Yeah, I've got some I got some gaps after like nine ten I

[00:30:17] Stopped and then I came back for like seven remake and

[00:30:22] Yeah, the new ones just didn't do it for me. I know shout out to pixel project radio Rick

[00:30:28] He just slapped out an episode with retro hangover Chris about Final Fantasy 13 and I haven't listened to that one yet

[00:30:35] But from I guess what he said it was surprisingly

[00:30:40] Not as bad as everybody says. Yeah, it's it's it's a weird game man. Like the story is nonsensical and

[00:30:49] very hard to understand

[00:30:52] Whole game is kind of nonsensical. But yeah, the combat is really really fun cuz like

[00:30:57] It's almost kind of almost like a like a like a Xenoblade Chronicles kind of combat system

[00:31:03] Kind of we're like each character. There's like tank mage

[00:31:07] Attacker you can swap out but you can set up different I guess we'll say templates or like, um

[00:31:15] Yeah, different like templates of paradigms for characters

[00:31:18] So like switch this character to tank and this character to attack or this character healer

[00:31:23] Oh

[00:31:24] It's it's a thing man, but it's cool. It's cool

[00:31:28] Who wants to do the last one? I don't know. I'm gonna have to apologize again. These are games that I haven't played but

[00:31:35] Go hobo go says I really like the weapon of magic triangle system in the fire emblem games

[00:31:40] Another one is that system and fallout games fire emblem is one of those games

[00:31:45] Or one of those series I should say one of those franchises that

[00:31:49] Every time a new one comes out it gets a lot of praise and I'm this close to getting it and then I don't

[00:31:56] It's one of those because it's a tactics right

[00:32:01] Mostly and I don't know. I I personally am pretty hot or cold on tactics games

[00:32:06] Sometimes it really jives in my brain and sometimes it just all feels too confusing to me. Yeah, I don't know

[00:32:13] What would you guys say would be the best starter fire emblem game if you've played?

[00:32:17] I'd say you've played many if you want one that's like all killer

[00:32:21] No filler both one of the Gameboy advanced ones like you can't

[00:32:25] You can't go wrong with with those like the sacred stones

[00:32:29] Yeah, the sacred stones. That's the one with like the two you kind of switch between

[00:32:34] Protagonists here and there like that. That one's that one's really good. Okay

[00:32:39] Very nice and that's it. That's the discord Q&A. It's all done and over. Hey, let's take another really short break

[00:32:46] And we'll be right back. Stay tuned

[00:32:48] Hey, we're back

[00:33:08] Yeah, now we're on to our picks our hot juicy picks

[00:33:14] Juicy

[00:33:18] Well, I'm just gonna get this out of the way the the one that I mentioned that's like kind of like Sifu

[00:33:23] The the Batman Arkham combat

[00:33:27] Have you guys played those games before I

[00:33:30] Have

[00:33:31] Cameron loves them. They're so good. I am an outlier here folks

[00:33:37] Didn't I make you play I didn't make you play like Arkham City

[00:33:41] So didn't we have a patch or something?

[00:33:44] Yeah

[00:33:45] So Cameron I we do a predictions episode every year and whoever wins the prediction plays a game that the other player must play

[00:33:52] So I lost one year and Cameron picked

[00:33:55] One of the Batman Arkham games I actually ended up buying the trilogy it was like five bucks or something I

[00:34:01] Played this one. They just announced the sequel to the Arkham games and it's on VR. Yes

[00:34:10] Everybody goes excited

[00:34:12] Reveal trailer and it was like oh my gosh, it's a new Arkham game and then at the end screen it flashes mediquest 3

[00:34:22] Beer cans being thrown at the screen

[00:34:25] Yeah, all the hype just left the room

[00:34:27] Man, yeah the way the way Jared described described Sifu

[00:34:32] Kind of as this like ballet of like balancing

[00:34:36] This move or not balancing chaining this move to that move to that move with it's it's they have very reminiscent. Well, I guess

[00:34:43] Arkham came first. So I guess

[00:34:46] Sifu is reminiscent of Arkham, but yeah, man the Batman Arkham games. It's like

[00:34:53] Depending on which kind of enemies you're fighting and like whatever else is going on

[00:34:58] You'll have to carefully like choreograph and plan out this plan of attack like ooh, you know one punch to this guy

[00:35:05] And then cape trolled to this

[00:35:07] big guy and then hop over this guy with a shield and then toss a battering and a couple dudes and then

[00:35:14] like it's it's got this really cool feel to it like I

[00:35:20] Just haven't played any other game I mean

[00:35:22] No, I guess the the shadow of Mordor games kind of they have like the same kind of combat system as well, too

[00:35:28] But spider-man a little bit. Yeah, and it's just it's so fun, man

[00:35:33] It's just so cool to rack up a gigantic combo because yeah

[00:35:36] The more moves you chain together without being hit the more XP you get and use that to buy upgrades or something

[00:35:43] And

[00:35:44] There's those really cool like finisher attacks or you'll do like fucking rapid-fire bullet punches to an enemy's chest and then he's just

[00:35:51] knocked out or

[00:35:54] Yeah

[00:35:55] So good, man, especially Arkham City

[00:35:58] Like they added a whole bunch of cool new upgrades you can get and yeah, but those games rule so hard bought it on Black Friday

[00:36:06] 2012 I think whenever it came out nice. I actually played those games

[00:36:12] for the first time on

[00:36:16] On live you guys know what that is. I

[00:36:20] Don't know Xbox thing on live is

[00:36:24] Sony bots. Oh

[00:36:27] It is now like Sony streaming back-end technology like for their streaming for like PlayStation Plus or like streaming games on PlayStation and

[00:36:38] Yeah, so I played this thing on like

[00:36:40] 480p

[00:36:43] 2012 and thought it was like one of the best games I'd ever played but it was like

[00:36:48] You know like barely running like through an internet browser

[00:36:53] But yeah, I mean that's I think that's a that's an amazing pick

[00:36:56] I mean, that's I think that game is really the

[00:37:00] That's the bedrock or foundation. I think of what a lot of action games like look to

[00:37:05] For inspiration most heavily obviously like the spider-man games for sure heavily heavily heavily take from

[00:37:13] from the Arkham games

[00:37:15] yeah, there's yeah the comp the satisfying combos and kind of the

[00:37:20] The bouncing back and forth between enemies. Yeah, we he like homes in with the with a punch like this right to some dudes face

[00:37:29] Mostly get like a big puzzle that's like, okay

[00:37:32] How can I ever gonna take out these small guys and then take out this big guy without getting ganged up on by?

[00:37:37] These smaller dudes. It's

[00:37:40] So cool. So yeah satisfying

[00:37:45] Okay, um

[00:37:47] I don't know

[00:37:49] I don't want to give too many caveats or preface too long all my picks

[00:37:53] But I tried to pick things that were recent

[00:37:55] Or fairly recent and the first one I'm gonna pick is cassette beasts

[00:38:01] Okay, I

[00:38:03] Love love this combat and as a longtime Pokemon fan. I thought this was the best

[00:38:10] iteration or innovation of the Pokemon combat

[00:38:13] So it's essentially forced double battles. So you're only controlling two, you know monsters at a time and

[00:38:21] The way that they do like type advantages and disadvantages really comes down to

[00:38:26] mastering your buffs and debuffs and

[00:38:29] Being able to manipulate what type either your cassette beast is or one of the opposing cassette beasts is

[00:38:37] And so I just love that instead of thinking like oh this attack is gonna be four times super effective against this enemy

[00:38:43] It was more like okay. How can I strategically set it up?

[00:38:47] So that in two turns from now when I have enough, you know charge for this attack it will totally decimate

[00:38:55] This enemy and so I think it's possible in games like Pokemon to think and plan ahead

[00:39:02] But oftentimes you're thinking in the moment of the turn

[00:39:05] And I just think what cassette beast really does for turn-based battling is it really has a fantastic

[00:39:11] strategy to make you think two three four turns out in advance and

[00:39:16] I was shocked at how secondhand that became to me

[00:39:21] While playing the game and as I discovered new cassette beasts and new types even

[00:39:26] Just a huge fan of of how cassette beast really worked with that formula made it their own

[00:39:32] That sounds really really cool man. I

[00:39:35] Is that still on game pass?

[00:39:37] Jack, I think it is and if but it might be coming off soon

[00:39:43] They are doing there no no, it's still there. Okay, I think it's May 20th

[00:39:48] They're doing this huge multiplayer update where they're gonna have I think it's up to eight co-op and raid battles

[00:39:55] You're gonna they're gonna have online PvP. They're gonna have cuz that beast trading

[00:40:00] Like they're going all out that game has slept on super hard. It sounds

[00:40:05] It's really really like

[00:40:09] Fantastic and especially like if you're a Pokemon fan of like that style like they're doing things that I

[00:40:16] Think kind of put Pokemon to shame to be honest a little bit

[00:40:20] Just in terms of their evolutions and my combat and just how it feels and sort of like the

[00:40:27] 2.5d

[00:40:29] 3.2. I can't write like that art style that art was like make the sprites on a 3d anyway, it works

[00:40:36] Yeah

[00:40:38] Yeah, that updates gonna be massive. I'm looking forward to that dude. I'm

[00:40:42] I'm reading a little bit about the combat on Wikipedia. Hey, thanks Wikipedia for the thousands time

[00:40:48] I go to Wikipedia all the time on the show

[00:40:52] longtime sponsor of the show

[00:40:55] Talk about how you think about how different elements react to one another and they're given examples like

[00:41:01] creating a healing steam mist around water monsters by hitting them with fire or

[00:41:06] Coding metal monsters poison lets them do extra damage on contact. Like that's that's super fucking cool

[00:41:13] That's oh, it's it's 3d chess

[00:41:15] I think in a lot of ways or like you hit a plastic type with a fire type attack and it'll turn it to

[00:41:21] toxic type so

[00:41:24] The thing yeah, that's the thing is

[00:41:26] It's constantly changing and I just think it's it's a really good way to really stretch your brain

[00:41:32] In that type of turn-based battling. So that's my first pick cuz that piece

[00:41:35] I don't know how I haven't played this already, but I'm downloading this right now. I wish this app faster

[00:41:43] All right Cameron already

[00:41:46] I couldn't figure out which one to start with but I will go with

[00:41:53] Sukiro shadows die twice. Oh, yeah, that's my first pick. This is the

[00:42:00] Perfect example of the idea that I was just talking about during the Q&A of

[00:42:07] simple but nuanced

[00:42:09] Meaning like you really don't have that many buttons right? Like you have an attack button and you have a dodge and

[00:42:18] then you have like

[00:42:20] You know some special abilities, but they're basically just kind of mapped to like two buttons and then the challenge

[00:42:26] The challenge and like the mechanics of every single fights with every single different type of enemy

[00:42:33] It's so finely tuned and like perfectly

[00:42:37] It's just so perfectly like calculated and unbalanced

[00:42:42] That it's just for me. It's the most satisfying common system I've ever played and it's incredibly challenging and it's a game

[00:42:50] Literally, I bought three times

[00:42:53] on Steam

[00:42:56] Played the first two hours

[00:42:58] Got to like one hour and 40 minutes and was like no like screw it. This game is not this game is just not for me

[00:43:06] stopped

[00:43:08] Return the game

[00:43:09] Six months later bought it again one year later bought it again did the same thing literally like my fourth time it finally clicked and

[00:43:19] Did just there's nothing more satisfying in any video game than a McCurry counter

[00:43:24] And if you know what that is, there's just literally like there's just no better feeling than

[00:43:31] the like split second, you know perry window and

[00:43:37] Like getting that correction on the way the game rewards you with like an insane damage hit man

[00:43:42] Like that's awesome each other's thinking about it. Mm-hmm. That's a good pick man

[00:43:46] I've never played sec a row but um, it's it's like it's a lot like faster paced than a Dark Souls

[00:43:54] Isn't it? Yeah, it's different

[00:43:57] The best defense is a good offense that's the way that you have to play sec euro

[00:44:03] You don't really do defense which it's like guys I'm gonna keep myself to like 30 seconds. I promise. Okay, okay

[00:44:11] but

[00:44:13] In comparison to like Souls games where you can sit back and wait for a window in

[00:44:18] Sekiro you you cannot do that because you're not fighting a health meter

[00:44:23] You're fighting a posture bar right in the posture bar will you know diminish over time?

[00:44:28] So you must max out their posture as quickly as possible and that is required through aggressive play

[00:44:33] So yeah huge fan of second row. I actually I've beat second row

[00:44:37] I think six times I managed to get all achievements on that

[00:44:41] That's one of my biggest proudest gamer moments is when I boot up my Xbox

[00:44:45] You can set achievements to your background screen and the 100% achievement is the background

[00:44:50] Oh, yeah, my nothing makes you feel more like a king

[00:44:54] then just absolutely dominating like a boss and sec hero because the game is so challenging and I like

[00:45:01] It makes you suffer so badly for the first several hours

[00:45:04] Then when you finally master it and you start just decimating like bosses and like deflective like deflective like tink tink tink tink

[00:45:11] And you're just like wasting you're just like dude, I'm unstoppable. I can literally do anything. I can run a marathon

[00:45:18] I could eat four cheeseburgers in a row

[00:45:23] Honestly when I

[00:45:26] Think I actually did celebrate beating Sekiro by eating something like a whole pint of Ben and Jerry's or something well deserved

[00:45:33] It's well

[00:45:35] Okay, I gotta lean forward for my next pick cuz holy shit. It's a lot. This is

[00:45:40] Probably the same vein as like well, it's not like the same kind of combat as Sekiro

[00:45:45] But it's the same kind of like challenge and like reward have either of you guys ever played

[00:45:50] Like a main series shin Megami tensei game or like shin Megami tensei for I

[00:45:55] Have not I know that five is coming right? It's out already. There's this like the the vengeance one is like

[00:46:02] Like it's like an enhanced port of five with extra junk

[00:46:05] It's like persona five royal but for a shin Megami tensei five, but okay

[00:46:10] I'm about to blow the whole roof on this bitch. I'll limit myself to a time as well, too

[00:46:15] so a shin Megami tensei for

[00:46:19] it uses

[00:46:21] It's it's got like I guess like the foundation would be just like a normal turn based combat

[00:46:25] But it's got what's called like the press turn system, which was used a lot in like they had a game on the ps2

[00:46:31] I think it's shin Megami tensei three kind of

[00:46:35] What are who cares? Yeah press turn system

[00:46:37] so so normal turn based but when you strike an enemy's weakness or you land a crit you get an extra turn and

[00:46:44] that also works the same way for enemies as well too and then say and

[00:46:48] if you hit if you hit enemies or an enemy's hit you with an element that you deflect or

[00:46:56] Deflect or like absorb or straight up just nullifies the damage

[00:47:00] You'll lose a turn or the enemy will lose a turn stuff like that

[00:47:04] So it's got and and you don't know like any of the enemy like when you first encounter an enemy

[00:47:09] You won't know what their strengths or weaknesses are as far as elements go

[00:47:14] So you'll have to do a lot of trial and error especially with bosses

[00:47:17] Bosses are a huge fucking pain in the ass in these games

[00:47:20] You'll have to get a couple of a couple of fights in before you really learn what what attacks they use

[00:47:26] What's what they're weak against what they're strong to so, you know use that kind of shit again and really mess yourself up

[00:47:32] And they're like one of the few turn based RPGs where buffs and debuffs actually really heavily matter

[00:47:40] mmm, so after a couple of interesting after a couple of I guess like trial fights with bosses

[00:47:45] You could probably formulate a good strategy like fuse this demon and this demon together to make the perfect healer or like this one

[00:47:52] And this one for a bunch of fire magic a bunch of buffs man. It's it's so fucking cool

[00:47:59] It's probably I want to say like my third favorite game of all time and

[00:48:05] Right. This is three or four is your favorite for is for yeah

[00:48:10] Three is also that on ps4

[00:48:12] I think I think four is still stuck on 3ds. Unfortunately, oh

[00:48:20] Three I think it's on everything now and five is coming to everything

[00:48:27] Once the vengeance thing comes out but five is worth it to five is really fucking good

[00:48:33] They had a whole lot more to that is this uh

[00:48:36] this oh

[00:48:38] This is Alice, okay

[00:48:40] Yeah, this is persona got it. That's awesome man. I this is another reason I need a steam deck for that emulation. Oh

[00:48:49] Yeah, yeah man

[00:48:50] Cuz it they just won't take it off of the fucking 3ds

[00:48:53] Even though you don't need the the touchscreen like you don't ever use the touchscreen stuff for anything

[00:48:58] It's just literally like in battles

[00:49:01] You'll have like the the top screen

[00:49:03] You'll see the enemies like the enemy portraits or whatever then the bottom screen

[00:49:07] You'll see like your health bars and stuff like you could totally ported something else. Um

[00:49:12] Yeah, Shin Megami 10 say five and three use like kind of the same battle system

[00:49:16] But like they'll they'll tweak it in certain small ways

[00:49:19] but yeah, if you haven't tried any of those three and five are I

[00:49:25] Think like the most widely available now that definitely give them a shot

[00:49:30] Man that's always a pain when

[00:49:33] Games aren't available

[00:49:35] we don't need to go down that road, but

[00:49:38] I got really into armored core six fires of Rubicon

[00:49:41] Which I almost picked actually for this

[00:49:43] But I loved it and I wanted I was looking back at their big titles that were really popular and I really want

[00:49:50] To play armored core for answer. Everybody loves that one, but

[00:49:55] crazy difficult to come across so

[00:49:58] Big pain. All right, but one that I did pick for this. I'm actually gonna go kind of the opposite direction

[00:50:05] Vampire survivors. Yes

[00:50:09] Vampire survivors, I think on the surface you think like is there a lot of combat here?

[00:50:15] But what I love about vampire survivors is because it's kind of random

[00:50:20] What abilities you'll get you learn to be good with a lot of different abilities and then the little things they added like the different

[00:50:27] Evos that you can get when you can combine

[00:50:31] different abilities and then you can really start thinking about build crafting and then kind of going back to the Q&A as well just

[00:50:38] There's nothing like the ultimate moment of combat trial

[00:50:43] Survivors when you can

[00:50:49] Slow vampire survivors so much

[00:50:52] It's so good when you can set down the controller and go do something for ten minutes

[00:50:57] And come back like go take the dog out in my case and the game is still going

[00:51:02] Like you have achieved the pinnacle. That's Nirvana

[00:51:06] like the crazy thing is a

[00:51:09] Lot of times you'll get annoyed you're like, oh man with the gameplay like I don't have to do anything at this point

[00:51:14] It's not that exciting but for vampire survivors

[00:51:16] I don't know how they do it

[00:51:18] I can't explain it but being able to actually do less while playing feels like such a triumph in that game

[00:51:25] While you're just seeing numbers flash on the screen enemies disappear

[00:51:29] And then you know the the roulette of every time you get a chest and something upgrades

[00:51:34] That game is pure dopamine

[00:51:36] Yeah, just a that's a

[00:51:39] So brilliantly designed

[00:51:41] It's just like on the surface. It looks like the most jank thing imaginable

[00:51:48] And then you play it and you're like what is this I don't it's only three dollars and you can't be good

[00:51:54] Yeah, it's like three. This looks like a mobile like like oh wait

[00:51:58] I can't even like shoot the guys like what's happening? Yeah, he's playing for a little bit and you get plenty like and then you

[00:52:03] play for like

[00:52:05] 15 hours you're like, oh my gosh

[00:52:07] This is like one of the deepest games that ever like I don't I have to have the wiki up when I play that

[00:52:13] Yeah, literally in order to like know how to play it and that's just the crazy. It's crazy

[00:52:19] Okay, real quick. What's the longest run you guys had of Empire survivors? I

[00:52:24] Don't remember I mean the max is like 31 minutes, isn't it? Cuz that's when the Reaper comes out

[00:52:30] Yeah, you have to break 20

[00:52:34] Something for this one level and I still haven't been able to break it so I'm not very good

[00:52:38] I've for sure gotten there where like the Reaper kills me. So I think like 30 something seconds

[00:52:44] Isn't there an endless mode? Oh, maybe now I'm gonna feel like I made this up

[00:52:48] But I'm pretty sure I had a run go 60 minutes. Well, holy shit

[00:52:55] And it was definitely one of those

[00:52:57] Controller

[00:53:00] Okay, this is what I did it's a controller down shit

[00:53:07] I'm still I'm still in now. I put the controller down and then went upstairs and I made dinner

[00:53:15] And it came back down and it was still going I was like science you're really good at video games

[00:53:20] That's a good one, man. Oh, yeah. Alrighty. I'm up again

[00:53:23] I'm gonna give

[00:53:26] Sort of a two two and one that will make sense

[00:53:30] But I mean my answer my pick is boulders gate three. Hell, yeah, but I think you can't talk about boulders gate three without

[00:53:39] Without giving a shout out to divinity originals in two

[00:53:44] Which some in some circles would argue has actually a better combat system than boulders gate three

[00:53:51] Which in some instances, I think I would

[00:53:54] Probably agree but what boulders gate three does is it takes like the bones that they built in

[00:54:02] The Vinny original sin 2 and it adds like this level of production and detail and like

[00:54:08] animation and speed and like all these little quality of life and like advances to it that just take it to that next

[00:54:15] Take it to that next level that for me

[00:54:18] Just makes it one of the best comma system ever played and

[00:54:22] It's weird because you know, it's based on a combat system that exists. It's just the rule. It's just D&D

[00:54:29] 5e right which

[00:54:31] It's weird though when you play that in a video game

[00:54:34] Just how satisfying and how like amazing it is and all the work that they put all the flourishes they put in were like

[00:54:41] Every individual character has their own

[00:54:44] Spellcasting animations they have their own voice lines for like warrior cries and like

[00:54:51] Spellcasting of different spells they'll use like different like, you know magic lane like and then the amount of build

[00:54:58] Crafting and in strategy and like the tactical combat and the positioning and when you combine all that

[00:55:05] together

[00:55:07] It's for me. I mean it's the ultimate like sandbox and it's just so much fun

[00:55:12] I think my thing with like turn based with boulders gate 3 is

[00:55:16] It actually gives you a more finite control over combat than any other

[00:55:21] Combat system because of the fact that it's turn based. I think people will see turn base, right?

[00:55:25] I make it turned off because I go it's slow

[00:55:28] But what sir but actually boulders gate 3 they they took the turn based genre and I think advanced it a lot

[00:55:35] Because of what they do with like speed and just the different ways that you interact and just the tactile feeling of how that

[00:55:42] combat plays out I

[00:55:44] Think for me like nothing much that you just have so much finite control of how you approach scenarios

[00:55:49] I think it's it's unbeatable in that sense

[00:55:52] Yeah, there's so much stuff you can do in combat

[00:55:55] One of my favorite moments in this game and I love how many likes cool funny stories you can get out of this game

[00:56:00] too

[00:56:01] one of my favorite moments was

[00:56:03] Oh, what was it? So you're going I think to this like goblin lair to rescue

[00:56:10] Somebody I forget you have to be like the different goblin chiefs

[00:56:15] Yeah, yeah. Okay. So so there was one I was fighting I

[00:56:20] Think he was in like a throne room or something and like either outside of the throne room

[00:56:24] But like in the throne room, there's this pit that has dragger

[00:56:28] Has like three giant spiders in this pit underneath

[00:56:32] So I learned this dude up into the rafters above the throne room and I was like

[00:56:37] Shoved him down and he fell all the way down to where those spiders were took a shit ton of damage. He was

[00:56:44] Knocked prone for a couple turns the spiders wailed on him

[00:56:48] He got up he clocked a spider like once been the spiders were like no son and they just

[00:56:53] Annihilated him then I was like, alright, I win

[00:56:56] This is good. There's so did it it's like the things that you can do literally are

[00:57:04] Like I keep discovering different stories of people online saying how they like completed a certain scenario and I'm like

[00:57:10] I mean, I wouldn't have even like thought that I would even be remotely

[00:57:15] possible the first time I killed that same boss I

[00:57:18] Just pushed him from his throne like into the pit

[00:57:21] Yeah, just like straight-up pass an athletics check and just like boom boss killed and I was like, oh

[00:57:29] Yeah pits in that game are the best pushing is the op

[00:57:34] It really is dude. If you can't do anything else use that bonus action to just shove them away from you

[00:57:39] Just give him a good shove like hey fuck off bud

[00:57:43] It gets difficult enough I'm actually I'm on my second play through on tactician mode now

[00:57:48] And I'm way better at the combat now, but my first playthrough I use

[00:57:55] Telekinesis on a lot of bosses

[00:58:02] Oh my god, man, that's so cool

[00:58:05] That's how you win though

[00:58:07] I've killed you don't get the loot but you win. Yeah, you get the XP. That's sometimes that's even better than Lou

[00:58:14] sometimes

[01:06:17] Shh, but you feel like right next to their face kind of spooks them for a second

[01:06:21] But then they see your contact info it gets their attention. They're like wow, this guy's fucking sweet

[01:06:27] Where's it get his throwing stars

[01:06:31] Do I have a job for you?

[01:06:33] Thank you

[01:06:35] Thank you digit throwing stars dotnet for sponsoring this episode. Oh

[01:06:52] We're back

[01:06:54] um

[01:06:54] I've got a couple more her let's have you guys ever played a yokai watch game

[01:07:03] No, I haven't

[01:07:06] another 3ds game god damn it so

[01:07:10] Yokai watch 3 they change up the combat a little bit

[01:07:14] Basically, I guess in the yokai watch games

[01:07:18] It's like Pokemon a little bit but like in combat you'll have a team of

[01:07:24] Like you'll set a team of like I think it's six yokai

[01:07:29] Yeah, and in combat you can switch them out with with other yokai whenever you need to in case they're like

[01:07:36] Low-health or they have a curse on them and you're just like well, I don't have time to undo this goddamn curse

[01:07:42] I'll take him back and throw this guy in

[01:07:44] So in in yokai watch 3 it changed it up a little bit

[01:07:48] They do this on the touchscreen that you have this like three by three grid then you can move like yokai

[01:07:55] You know move one this way

[01:07:57] Yeah, like checkers kind of but each yokai has or belongs to a different tribe

[01:08:02] Which was sort of like for each tribe has like a specialty

[01:08:07] I guess so like tough they're bulkier. They're tankier. Oh, it's the heart one

[01:08:14] There's one that's like they have more speed

[01:08:17] eerie inflicts a lot of like

[01:08:20] status ailments like poison and shit like that

[01:08:23] So you could strategize and set up this like perfect team of yokai

[01:08:28] Swamp them out in battle. So they like they perfectly complement each other and

[01:08:32] I gotta lean forward again for this. I've got a lot explaining to do

[01:08:36] With that grid when you're like moving them around to different spots that can kind of affect things as well, too

[01:08:41] Like say if you if you link three together and like a horizontal line or whatever

[01:08:46] They're all like parallel whatever and they're all linked together

[01:08:50] When they're all next to each other when one does when one yokai attacks

[01:08:53] They'll all attack at the same time because I also forgot to mention that the combats your yokai

[01:08:58] Will attack on their own like you don't

[01:09:01] Instead of like Pokemon and shit where it's turn-based and you like pick an attack for them to do little attack on their own and

[01:09:08] based on their

[01:09:10] Like attitude I think they'll do certain things like there's one attitude

[01:09:15] Well, they'll just those block a lot like they'll just defend themselves

[01:09:19] And there's another one for like like another attitude where they'll just use their basic attack a lot or

[01:09:25] They'll use their

[01:09:27] In spirit or whatever the fuck the magic is called in that game

[01:09:31] But yeah

[01:09:31] the way you

[01:09:32] Move them around in a formation like say if you put your tanky dude in front of your weaker yokai

[01:09:38] When an enemy attacks they'll attack just a tanky guy. So he'll absorb that hit save your other yokai

[01:09:43] You can heal up and

[01:09:45] Take a turn to recoup. Yeah, man. There's a lot but it's it's really cool another one

[01:09:50] you'll probably have to emulate because

[01:09:53] Japan hates us. They won't bring another yokai to like switch or anything

[01:09:57] But they're they're really really cool, especially three I think one and two

[01:10:02] Have this like wheel you can rotate to like move your yokai around whenever but yeah, it's cool

[01:10:10] This is a TV show too, right? Like this is an anime series. I think I've seen

[01:10:16] It from there, but not the games. No random side thought. Yeah, man. They're pretty freakin sweet

[01:10:23] Who's going next? Okay, I'm up

[01:10:26] Actually, we were just talking about this game. This is a game that I am looking for an excuse to just 100%

[01:10:35] And it is called goes to Tsushima

[01:10:39] this games combat

[01:10:41] I

[01:10:42] Love I love the action in this combat because this is one it has a ton of flair

[01:10:48] You feel very in control of scenarios like you can really take control of scenarios

[01:10:53] And what threw me off at first was not being able to lock on to enemies at first

[01:10:58] I thought that this was like, oh man. I don't know if I'm gonna enjoy this

[01:11:02] But the game showed I think very quickly to me that it was much

[01:11:08] This is a much better design choice that you actually it forces you to think a lot more about crowd control

[01:11:13] It forces you to think about the combat

[01:11:16] mechanic of different stances when you're engaging with different groups of enemies and different enemy types and sort of

[01:11:23] how to how to just manage all the different sort of checks and balances that come with advantages and disadvantages in combat and

[01:11:32] It's just gorgeous too. This is another game

[01:11:34] We were talking a little bit right in the Q&A about God of War where the production really comes through

[01:11:39] Animations are slick. It feels really good to do like execute the combat and the combos in this game

[01:11:46] The abilities feel good and this is a big thing for me when it comes to a lot of games is if there's a skill tree

[01:11:53] I want to feel the difference when I invest in an ability or get a new ability

[01:11:58] And I think it goes to Tsushima just absolutely nails that so definitely one of my favorites for combat

[01:12:06] Again reading about the game. I

[01:12:09] Wikipedia says you can eventually unlock a blowgun that allows you to shoot poison darts and causes them to hallucinate

[01:12:16] That's cool. Yeah

[01:12:20] More games need blowdart guns

[01:12:25] They could go eat somebody's face off

[01:12:27] That that's just a Tsushima too. I think what that game does so well is

[01:12:32] It's definitely more of like a third-person action a combat style

[01:12:37] You know more action

[01:12:40] Less it's still it can still be extremely punishing especially if you play on hard mode. It's like one hit kill

[01:12:46] Holy shit

[01:12:47] Yeah

[01:12:49] but I don't think any game does a better job of like

[01:12:52] putting you in a situation where there's a lot of enemies around you and still giving you the ability to feel like

[01:12:57] Okay, I can like

[01:12:59] Literally be a samurai and like tactically take down each one of these guys

[01:13:06] And if you yeah, I started a second playthrough on hard and it's it can be brutal like it's it's puns

[01:13:13] Where you you really have to use all your

[01:13:17] Ghost abilities drop smoke and like you got it. Anyway, so good though

[01:13:22] God, he had another reason I need a PS 5 or something. I need to play returnal need to play that

[01:13:29] What else is there? I guess the Gallup the god of wars maybe. Yeah, I actually played God of War on PC

[01:13:36] Oh

[01:13:37] I'll just forget about that. Ghost of Tsushima is coming to PC soon too. On May 16th

[01:13:41] On May 16th mark your calendars

[01:13:45] May 16th two weeks. Oh man

[01:13:50] Can't wait that long

[01:13:55] Yeah, I will give my next pick which is

[01:14:01] I'm gonna go a different direction here and say and go with Titanfall 2

[01:14:06] I

[01:14:10] Think this so Titanfall 2 I think has the best

[01:14:14] First person shooter combat of the probably any game and I could be biased

[01:14:21] Because the campaign is so well done

[01:14:23] I still think it has the best first person shooter campaign of any first person shooter and I've pretty much played

[01:14:30] every first person shooter

[01:14:32] Not as much lately weirdly enough. I didn't play like the new

[01:14:38] Call of Duty campaign. Maybe I did I can't no yeah, I did and it was very good

[01:14:43] But yeah, no just just the the movement combined with like the weapon selection

[01:14:51] combined with like the mechs and

[01:14:53] Just your ability to like jump on walls and doing that all in first person

[01:14:58] Have that feel like as good as it does in first person is

[01:15:02] Just an incredible achievement and the multiplayer still which apex

[01:15:07] Legends obviously is a built off that was like the bedrock that build it. The multiplayer still is just insane

[01:15:13] Like what you can pull off from a just a movement

[01:15:16] Mechanical perspective and then combine that with shooting and just like the crazy shots that you can do if you're good in the game

[01:15:23] And if you watch like cracked out playthroughs of that

[01:15:27] It's just it's I can't even like comprehend what people are doing on the screen but

[01:15:35] I am I never played Titanfall 2

[01:15:37] I played the first one a lot like way back in the day like the first one

[01:15:42] was like a couple roommates and I would would

[01:15:45] play online a lot and I

[01:15:49] Forget a lot of what any of the weapons or abilities were but I know there was one class

[01:15:53] A lot that was like you had invisibility and there was like this

[01:15:59] really like ridiculous submachine gun and I would just like

[01:16:03] Sprint and like dive and then just yeah, fuck those games are really really good

[01:16:09] We were just talking about as like a progenitor to that I almost picked this but I decided that

[01:16:15] Kind of tip this one a little bit but the finals which came out recently. Oh, yeah free to play

[01:16:22] Multiplayer arena shooter

[01:16:24] extremely like so good like

[01:16:27] Some of the best first probably the best first person shooting mechanics out there currently like right now

[01:16:34] My next one is

[01:16:36] The combat system from from Grandia or Grandia to I don't know about any ones

[01:16:42] Other than that, I've only played like the two that are on the HD collection

[01:16:45] But yeah, the combat in this game is like kind of a mix almost of like strategy and turn-based

[01:16:51] So another one that I just

[01:16:54] These man, I need emulation. Give me emulation these ones. I think I

[01:17:00] Know the HD collection is for sure on switch, but I don't know if it's on anything else

[01:17:06] Is this a dreamcast game? Yeah, the second one is on dreamcast

[01:17:11] The first one was on PS 1 and Saturn. I'm pretty sure oh

[01:17:16] This is on steam

[01:17:18] Well, this this hit ps4 and Xbox one on March 26

[01:17:22] 2024. Oh, I guess yeah

[01:17:25] There you go. It's available

[01:17:28] According to Wikipedia. Thanks. We're good. Yeah

[01:17:31] We are very nice the combat so throughout the whole thing

[01:17:36] there's this little timeline on the bottom of the screen and there's little markers for like all of your party members and then

[01:17:43] the enemies and

[01:17:45] You'll start off. It's almost like it like an ATB gauge kind of like from like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger and stuff

[01:17:51] so you'll wait you'll wait and then you get to a part on the timeline we'll call it where it'll say like

[01:17:58] com basically it's where you can input a command and

[01:18:01] depending on like the I

[01:18:05] guess like the the level of your ability or spell or

[01:18:08] How far your character has to like run to get to an enemy that they can attack?

[01:18:13] They can then attack once they're in range

[01:18:15] Like your actions could kind of take a little while to like charge up or stuff like that

[01:18:20] so yeah, you select an action when it gets like the com part and then

[01:18:25] Once it gets to the very end of the timeline. That's when they'll actually do their attack

[01:18:30] and

[01:18:31] In that little like window between like command and attack

[01:18:36] Enemies you I guess you and enemies you you can actually like delay

[01:18:40] Actually, like if the safe an enemy is charging up a spell you run up to them slash him a couple times that'll

[01:18:45] Delay their spell a little bit and you can just have it a couple other characters run in there and slash them keep delaying

[01:18:51] Their spell and just eventually kill them or you can do like a critical strike and just flat-out cancel their spell

[01:18:57] they're gonna do and

[01:18:59] the enemies can do the same thing to you as well too and

[01:19:04] I'm pretty sure that's it. There's

[01:19:08] Yeah

[01:19:09] Depending on like where your characters are positioned if they have to run too far to get to an enemy

[01:19:14] They'll stop at a certain point and get tired and they won't be able to do their attack. I guess so there's that

[01:19:20] But yeah, it's really really cool dude. Very cool

[01:19:25] All these games that you've brought up this year for whatever reason the turn-based old-school long

[01:19:31] Like RPGs have been I don't know. I've been super interested in so now

[01:19:35] I've got this list here of games that are like 60 hours long

[01:19:42] Someday I'll play them

[01:19:50] Yeah

[01:19:52] For some reason I just can't get we have a friend who just loves he's played through

[01:19:57] Thrift or twice and it's like, you know 260 hours

[01:20:01] I

[01:20:03] That's too long for me man, I think

[01:20:07] Grandia 2 is like I think 40 hours at max and like

[01:20:12] Shin Megami 10 say 4 is like 60 hours that max and like that's that's it for me like 40 60 hours

[01:20:18] Like I'm not doing

[01:20:20] Do it a hundred hours. No bug. All right folks. I'm gonna cheat

[01:20:25] I'm gonna talk about my last game and then I'm gonna do two honor roll mentions because I have to get them out

[01:20:30] But the game I'm gonna talk about is on guard

[01:20:33] On guard came out last year and it was my indie game of the year of 2023

[01:20:41] You are you're playing in like

[01:20:44] Mediterranean coastal Spain as a Dalia and you're the swashbuckler and you know lady and you're saving your town and the

[01:20:52] Story is whatever but the combat is amazing

[01:20:55] And what is so masterful about the combat on guard is it is I think the absolute best use of like your

[01:21:03] environment to

[01:21:04] Stun or attack enemies to do crowd control and it's basically, you know if you grew up watching

[01:21:11] The Mask of Zorro movie. Oh, yeah, right with Antonio Banderas and you want to play that that's on guard

[01:21:19] All the the acrobats that flips over tables you stunning enemies swinging from chandeliers

[01:21:26] Kicking loots at bad guys, you know, it's all there and it is top-notch

[01:21:31] So on guard is one that I had to mention because I freaking loved it and it's we were talking about long games

[01:21:37] This is like a four-hour game

[01:21:40] It's like a four-hour campaign and then it has like this sort of arena mode

[01:21:44] Where you can really test your skills on top of it?

[01:21:47] I think it's amazing the two honorable mentions. I'm gonna throw in here other games

[01:21:51] I could talk about forever, but lies of P and chained echoes. Oh

[01:21:56] Games whose combat I freaking love I think lies of P is better than some from software games

[01:22:01] so you can come after me for saying that and

[01:22:05] Chained echoes

[01:22:08] Chained echoes was the game that got me back in the turn-based

[01:22:13] Combat that's how good its combat was. Yeah, man

[01:22:16] Let me I'll throw in a an honorable mention real fast strangle hold man. That game is insane

[01:22:24] Back on the 360 you're just rolling along on carts or like rolling along on the ground

[01:22:29] slow-mo shoot 80,000 people and hang from my chandeliers and

[01:22:35] This is like

[01:22:37] John Wu strangle wait. Yeah

[01:22:40] Yeah

[01:22:42] It's based on the movie hard-boiled or something dude. This is a deep cut

[01:22:50] It was so fun

[01:22:51] I don't know how there's different like other cool

[01:22:54] powers are not powers like abilities if you want to even call it like one is just called like aim where you just

[01:22:59] Like aim down the sights in a first-person view. But yeah, that gave so cool, dude

[01:23:05] Alright. Well, I will quickly give

[01:23:08] Quickly give mine my final one. Yeah, I mean there's a million ways I could go here

[01:23:17] There's one that immediately comes to mind but I won't say it just to not be drip just you know be more fun

[01:23:23] I think the one that I

[01:23:26] Think I want to bring forward is a dishonored to

[01:23:30] Nice. Yeah dishonored games one and two

[01:23:35] Just masterful first-person

[01:23:37] again, just another first-person game that just like the movement and like the abilities and the combat is

[01:23:43] Just so good. And if you go if you go to YouTube and type in like dishonored

[01:23:48] Oh my gosh, I can't I can't remember the term they use the game if dishonored chaos runs. Oh

[01:23:54] Yeah, were you killing me just and you just watch like how?

[01:23:59] the sheer insanity

[01:24:01] Levels of like chaos that you know and like the things that people pull off I

[01:24:09] Mean, it's the acrobatics are insane and the fact that the game gives you that ability in its sandbox

[01:24:15] Is what I think makes it a really impressive

[01:24:18] combat system are just so fun to try and execute just like awesome moves and like

[01:24:23] It's it's one of those games. That's like very highlight real friendly because of the stuff that you can do

[01:24:29] Yeah, that's great. That's a that's such a good pick the first thing. Yeah, I

[01:24:35] Remember pre-ordering the first game so long ago thinking like oh dude, it's stealth Bioshock, but it's totally

[01:24:42] Kind of still is that but yeah

[01:24:44] The playground is the perfect way to describe that shit

[01:24:47] You could do you can do anything you can just shove somebody off a cliff all about Baldur's Gate or you could

[01:24:52] Pick them off with I forget what the powers were or you just not kill anybody at all and just swoop past them and yeah

[01:25:00] Great pick. Yeah, it's one of those games that I feel like the further you get into like the abilities

[01:25:06] You're like, oh dude, I'm breaking the game

[01:25:07] I'm cheesing the game right now, but it's like actually the game design allows you to kind of do whatever you want here

[01:25:14] And for me, it's it's very reminiscent of

[01:25:17] like tears of the kingdom where it's just like

[01:25:21] Actually just trucks and robots

[01:25:23] Yeah, the crazy videos that came from tears of the kingdom

[01:25:26] I feel like the the devs just hand you these tools and they're like

[01:25:30] Surprise us. We want to see what you can do. You know what? I mean, it's like

[01:25:34] We don't want you to follow a written path

[01:25:36] We want us we want to see what you do

[01:25:38] And I just feel like the devs like from dishonored to and like tears of the kingdom

[01:25:42] They just they just boot up their favorite reel of like the crazy things that people have accomplished in that game

[01:25:48] You know and they're like, yeah, that was dope

[01:25:51] That is a good fucking pick man. Give me like a quick honorable mention for for us

[01:25:56] Yeah, I mean all throughout

[01:25:59] Say it Cameron just say it

[01:26:01] Wait what?

[01:26:04] I mean I said

[01:26:08] About Final Fantasy 7 remake. Oh, did we I thought we had it. I didn't to use it out of my pick

[01:26:11] But I do think

[01:26:13] honorable mention about as a 7 remake because

[01:26:15] I think it's the best use of action and turn-based like combined like in one system

[01:26:21] which I think like

[01:26:24] This is the best example is like I played Final Fantasy 16 hated the combat

[01:26:29] Has incredible production probably the best production values and maybe any video game

[01:26:33] And then I played after seven rebirth and I was like, yeah combat systems. Just like a bajillion times better

[01:26:39] I just love the use of the combination of the two

[01:26:42] Oh, yeah

[01:26:44] And that's it everybody the episodes over almost but yeah, it's the all the best combat systems and games

[01:26:51] Cameron Jake go ahead and one last time for the listeners plug your show all the other stuff that you have and let them know
