Ep. 110 - Games That Do Turn-Based Combat Better (ft. Andre)
Download MP3[00:00:00] I just discovered this, um, oh, I forget what the fuck, it was like Claw something, it's basically a Claw Machine deck building roguelike, and I've never been more on board for anything in my entire life. It was like- Sounds insane. Claw, Claw, Claw, Claw Bicula, something stupid like that. Claw Bicula? It was Claw something. Claw Bicula. That's what they do when you go into the doctor's office, they're like, I'm just gonna get you to bend over and cough and I'm gonna reach in and grab your Claw Bicula or whatever.
[00:00:30] Claw Bicula. Claw Bicula. Claw Bicula. Claw Bicula. You're Gaba Ghul!
[00:00:34] Just cough twice, I'm gonna grab your Gabba Ghul.
[00:00:38] They didn't watch New Mafia so I mean- They did, yeah!
[00:00:47] What adoo everybody, my name is Aaron, I own more Allen Wrenches than anyone in the world.
[00:00:52] And I'm Jerry and I just drank a gallon of paint. Let's see what happens.
[00:00:55] And you're listening to SuperPod Saga.
[00:01:09] I forgot, guests aren't allowed, I was about to say something and I was not allowed to talk.
[00:01:13] Guests are not allowed to push the lotion in the basket or I guess it was a good.
[00:01:17] I feel weird without talking without someone introducing me.
[00:01:22] That's okay.
[00:01:24] Oh, that's right.
[00:01:24] Everybody, welcome back.
[00:01:25] Have a seat, take your shoes off, stay a while.
[00:01:28] This is indeed SuperPod Saga.
[00:01:30] I'm your host, Aaron.
[00:01:31] I'm joined, of course, by Jerry.
[00:01:33] Hello, Jerry.
[00:01:34] Yo.
[00:01:35] Hello.
[00:01:35] Yo, indeed.
[00:01:37] Yes.
[00:01:38] Yo, yo, yo.
[00:01:39] Three yo-yos.
[00:01:40] I wish I had three yo-yos.
[00:01:42] For any first time listeners, this is the podcast where each week we discuss a different video game topic with different guests.
[00:01:47] Hang out, have fun, talk video games, video game accessories.
[00:01:50] Jerry, what the hell are we talking about today?
[00:01:52] Oh, oh, hi.
[00:01:53] I'm here.
[00:01:55] Fuck it.
[00:01:56] Andre, you tell everybody what we're talking about today.
[00:02:00] I'm sorry.
[00:02:03] He couldn't contain himself.
[00:02:05] He couldn't do it any longer.
[00:02:06] He was like a dog just sitting there waiting for a treat, and he's like, I want a treat.
[00:02:10] I want it now.
[00:02:13] May I?
[00:02:13] This would be a great honor.
[00:02:14] I love doing this.
[00:02:15] Okay.
[00:02:16] Today, we are talking about, on this here podcast, our favorite turn-based combat systems and RPGs.
[00:02:24] Is that correct?
[00:02:24] Because that's what I took notes for.
[00:02:26] So hopefully that's what we're talking about.
[00:02:27] Pretty much.
[00:02:28] Pretty much.
[00:02:29] Our favorite combat systems that took turn-based combat and just tweaked it, pulled it apart, and made it even better than turn-based combat already is.
[00:02:37] Because listeners, turn-based combat is not outdated, not by anybody that says otherwise.
[00:02:42] Turn-based combat just has this layer of complexity and strategy that you just don't get with action-based combat.
[00:02:50] Like say Dark Souls, where you roll around.
[00:02:52] I'm not saying Dark Souls is bad by any means.
[00:02:55] I'll say it.
[00:02:56] Better not to.
[00:02:57] But Dark Souls, you just, I mean, you roll around and attack.
[00:03:00] And I mean, yes, there's strategy to that.
[00:03:01] But turn-based combat is fun.
[00:03:03] I love it.
[00:03:04] Jerry loves it.
[00:03:05] Andre loves it.
[00:03:06] And so are tank controls.
[00:03:08] Yeah.
[00:03:08] I love tank controls.
[00:03:09] I love the entire tank controls era.
[00:03:11] Hell yeah.
[00:03:13] But yes, thank you.
[00:03:14] Andre, for any listeners who haven't heard you on this show before, go ahead and introduce yourself, your show, plug in your socials, all that stuff.
[00:03:21] Tell us about your, what's your favorite pizza topping?
[00:03:25] Or your favorite, like, your dream pizza?
[00:03:29] My dream pizza?
[00:03:31] You know, honestly, my favorite pizza is pepperoni and bacon.
[00:03:36] Oh my God.
[00:03:38] I don't know why I've always settled on that, but it just, it just works.
[00:03:41] I couldn't, you know what it is?
[00:03:43] It's good everywhere.
[00:03:44] No matter where you get the pizza, no matter what kind of crust, even from like a place that's not that good.
[00:03:49] If you get pepperoni and bacon, you're pretty much, it's very hard to screw that up.
[00:03:54] I've never had a bad pepperoni and bacon pizza.
[00:03:57] But yeah, I'm Andre.
[00:03:59] Dre, if you're nasty, from the Fine Time podcast.
[00:04:03] Do I want to explain Fine Time to the people?
[00:04:05] I've been on here enough.
[00:04:06] I guess I should.
[00:04:07] Might as well.
[00:04:08] It's just three friends, me, Steve, and Kevin.
[00:04:10] Whatever we're playing, that could be something new.
[00:04:13] It could be Black Myth, Wukong.
[00:04:16] It could be something really old on TurboGrafx CD.
[00:04:19] It doesn't matter.
[00:04:19] Whatever we are currently playing authentically, that's what we're going to talk about on the show that day.
[00:04:24] We'd love to cover events and news and stuff.
[00:04:27] Gamescom is going on as we're recording this, so we're probably going to be obviously be talking about that.
[00:04:32] If there's a Nintendo Direct, that's Christmas for us.
[00:04:35] Like we, I mean, my God, right?
[00:04:38] We love covering, you know, Microsoft's, you know, follies too.
[00:04:42] It's real good stuff.
[00:04:43] We love to play games too.
[00:04:45] We love to do any quiz game that embarrasses us and like shows that how much we don't know about something is always funny.
[00:04:52] So we love to do stuff like that.
[00:04:54] But yeah, it's a good old fine time.
[00:04:57] Come have a fine time with us.
[00:05:00] You need to make that new bumper sticker.
[00:05:02] Come have a fine time with fine time.
[00:05:04] I mean, honestly, I've said it enough at this point.
[00:05:07] So I really should.
[00:05:09] Fine time.
[00:05:10] Fine time with fine time.
[00:05:12] Nice.
[00:05:14] Yeah, I can vouch.
[00:05:16] Yeah, fine time is really fucking good.
[00:05:18] The whole series where you guys go, you and Vin go through the Namco Museum.
[00:05:24] That shit is so fun to listen to because I've only ever played, I think, volume one.
[00:05:30] So it's awesome to hear about all the different games and rooms and shit and the volume two and three and stuff.
[00:05:37] I'm glad you liked it.
[00:05:38] We worked our ass off.
[00:05:40] I can safely say I've never worked harder on anything on fine time.
[00:05:43] And we recorded all those in one giant five hour plus session.
[00:05:48] Oh, yeah.
[00:05:49] So we we we did that shit, man.
[00:05:52] Like it was it was a labor of love.
[00:05:54] I I'm glad people are enjoying it.
[00:05:57] That's good, man.
[00:05:58] Well, listeners, if if you ever need more fine time in your life, you can find them, of course, in any any podcast player out there, I'm sure.
[00:06:06] But you could also go to superpodnetwork.com slash fine time.
[00:06:09] And that's all their stuff is there as well.
[00:06:11] Their socials, all that shit, as well as they are one of the homies.
[00:06:15] Exactly.
[00:06:16] Superpod Network home to so many awesome, fabulous podcasts and a pretty decent blog.
[00:06:21] Not to my own horn.
[00:06:23] I just wrote about Sonic Extreme because it's so fascinating.
[00:06:25] Yeah, go ahead.
[00:06:26] Do that horn.
[00:06:27] Yeah, do do it away.
[00:06:28] But you find retro rehab there as well.
[00:06:31] Superpod Saga, Super Ghost Radio, Gaming Together.
[00:06:34] All the homies are there.
[00:06:35] Bar Silence.
[00:06:37] Bar Silent, dude.
[00:06:38] Yes.
[00:06:39] We I'm sorry to play favorites.
[00:06:41] I just I just love that show.
[00:06:42] Jameson is fun.
[00:06:43] He's a real one, man.
[00:06:44] Yeah.
[00:06:45] I talk about Jameson's show all the time.
[00:06:47] And like he picks the best fucking games to do an episode about like Killer Instinct was his latest one.
[00:06:53] God damn.
[00:06:55] Yeah.
[00:06:55] His episodes are so fucking tight.
[00:06:57] So good.
[00:06:57] He has that shit.
[00:06:59] Honestly, I've tried a couple of solo episodes over the last year or so, and I think they've worked out pretty good.
[00:07:04] He was an inspiration for me to even try it in the first place.
[00:07:07] Like I'm not even close.
[00:07:10] Not a lot of people can do a solo show.
[00:07:12] But yeah, he just he fucking does it.
[00:07:14] He nails it, man.
[00:07:15] He's so good.
[00:07:16] Yeah.
[00:07:16] Bar Silence, everybody.
[00:07:17] Good night.
[00:07:18] Good night, everybody.
[00:07:20] Oh, and our man's Bill.
[00:07:22] All the fabulous shows he does.
[00:07:24] Like I listen to 3DO Experience.
[00:07:25] Bill's a working man.
[00:07:27] Yeah, dude.
[00:07:27] I love the 3DO Experience so fucking much.
[00:07:30] I listen to that every single time one comes out because I love hearing about the goofy, weird games that they play.
[00:07:35] Love it.
[00:07:35] But yeah, listeners, if you love us, go look at SuperPodNetwork.com.
[00:07:39] Check shit out.
[00:07:40] Leave a rating slash review on everybody's shows if you love them.
[00:07:44] Check out them Patreons and all that shit.
[00:07:46] But enough about us.
[00:07:48] Let's get into it.
[00:07:49] Let's get into it, man.
[00:07:51] Let's get those beefs.
[00:07:52] You're our guest.
[00:07:53] Go ahead.
[00:07:54] And if you need to, take a bite of pizza, take a swig of Pepsi and start us off, man.
[00:07:59] I'll save the pizza for later.
[00:08:01] That'll be my trees.
[00:08:03] Just put two over my eyes or they're good for your collection.
[00:08:07] Two on the eyes, two on the nipples, one on the hand.
[00:08:11] I already have pepperoni nips.
[00:08:12] We don't really need to put them there.
[00:08:16] Pop that top off.
[00:08:17] Pop that top off.
[00:08:18] Let's have a look at those pepperoni nips.
[00:08:20] With this shitty ass webcam, you're not going to be able to see shit.
[00:08:23] That shit's going to look like milk duds.
[00:08:42] Oh, fuck.
[00:08:44] I, uh, man.
[00:08:45] Okay.
[00:08:46] Wow.
[00:08:46] I don't even know how to do it.
[00:08:47] I don't.
[00:08:47] There's nothing else we get to get.
[00:08:48] I already said goodnight, everybody.
[00:08:49] I already said goodnight, everybody.
[00:08:50] I'll do his first pick, everybody.
[00:08:52] Let's do it.
[00:08:53] Let's let the guests go first.
[00:08:55] What's your first pick, Trey?
[00:08:58] Let's start.
[00:08:58] I'll start with something fairly recent.
[00:09:00] Okay.
[00:09:01] Well, I'm going to go recent.
[00:09:02] I want to talk about Octopath Traveler 2.
[00:09:05] Oh, fuck.
[00:09:06] Yeah, dude.
[00:09:07] Okay.
[00:09:08] Because enlighten me.
[00:09:09] I love both Octopath Travelers, of course.
[00:09:12] And they have very similar battle systems.
[00:09:15] And like 95% of what I'm about to say can probably apply to both games.
[00:09:19] But there are a couple things in Octopath 2 that make it like, you know, that like push
[00:09:23] it over the top.
[00:09:24] Yeah.
[00:09:25] Aaron, you've played two, right?
[00:09:27] Or just.
[00:09:28] Just the first one.
[00:09:29] Just the first one?
[00:09:30] Okay.
[00:09:30] So you'll be mostly familiar with what I'm about to say.
[00:09:33] Whereas like as just like an overview, the reason why I love Octopath.
[00:09:39] Is because your offense dictates your defense.
[00:09:44] Almost in a way where each character, each character.
[00:09:49] It's weird to call the enemy's characters.
[00:09:50] They are not characters.
[00:09:52] They are things you hit with your sticks and bows and spells.
[00:09:56] When you hit them, they have weaknesses that reveal themselves to you.
[00:10:01] Or you can reveal them with.
[00:10:03] By the way, I love when RPGs have the, you know, the spyglass or the search or whatever.
[00:10:09] You know, because in this game, it's really useful because it tells you all those weaknesses.
[00:10:13] Because usually it's like, okay, they have this much HP left in this game.
[00:10:16] That's like almost like critical to gameplay to have that.
[00:10:20] And then when you do that, you can.
[00:10:22] Okay.
[00:10:22] This one's weak to sword attacks and fire attacks and maybe a couple other things.
[00:10:26] You do those things.
[00:10:28] You exploit their weaknesses.
[00:10:29] Everyone has a number.
[00:10:30] And as you exploit them, that number goes down.
[00:10:32] Once that number gets to zero, they're broken.
[00:10:35] They're in the break state.
[00:10:36] That means they skip their next turn.
[00:10:38] Also, you can do like mega damage to them.
[00:10:42] And it's crazy because this works for everybody in the game, including bosses.
[00:10:48] This is what this is for me, like the soul of Octopath.
[00:10:51] Boss battles become this thing where you've seen it, Aaron.
[00:10:55] Every turn, if you will, is laid out in front of you.
[00:10:58] All the enemy turns and all the player turns.
[00:11:01] You see them all in a line up top.
[00:11:03] So you know exactly how it's going to go.
[00:11:05] And if you know, okay, this boss goes third and it's probably going to do this crazy attack
[00:11:12] to me, I need to break this motherfucker before it does that.
[00:11:16] You need to do everything in your power to do that.
[00:11:20] And that kind of stuff, to me, makes the best RPG battle systems.
[00:11:24] Turn-based or quite honestly, otherwise, but especially, you know, obviously, since we're
[00:11:28] talking about turn-based today, it's incredible strategy to be able, again, to do
[00:11:35] offensive things and not just be like, okay, brace myself.
[00:11:38] This thing's going to attack me, which you can do too if you can't break the thing.
[00:11:41] But Aaron, in 2, in Octopath 2, everyone has, for lack of a better term, I forget what they're
[00:11:47] called in the game, but everyone has a limit break, basically, now in this game.
[00:11:52] And some of them are kind of utilitarian.
[00:11:56] They're not like huge attacks or anything like that.
[00:11:58] But one of them is where this guy, one of the mages, it's a limit break where all his
[00:12:05] attacks cause break points to the opponent.
[00:12:09] It doesn't matter what you do.
[00:12:10] That's cool.
[00:12:12] So it's almost like a get out of jail free card.
[00:12:14] So it's like, you know, if this is the last guy on the line, it's like, okay, I better pop
[00:12:18] this and pop some attack that's going to hit three times or something like that.
[00:12:22] It doesn't matter what it is because you need to break them.
[00:12:25] All that kind of strategy stuff, obviously, I could go on about this for like five hours
[00:12:29] because I love these games.
[00:12:30] But having that sort of thing in a turn-based environment, I don't even know if that's the
[00:12:37] right term, is just incredible.
[00:12:40] I really, really, really love Octopath for that.
[00:12:43] So like, and honestly, this and Octopath 2 are like, maybe my favorite turn-based battle
[00:12:50] thing ever.
[00:12:51] I may feel like a little bit of recency bias, but honestly, after like 40 years of turn-based
[00:12:57] combat, I feel like we've just gotten to a place where it's like, this is just honestly
[00:13:02] the best.
[00:13:03] I don't think you can do better than Octopath for me, for my money.
[00:13:07] Dude, I've always wanted to play those games, but it seems intimidating.
[00:13:11] They're longer than I thought they would be.
[00:13:13] They're long.
[00:13:14] They're very long.
[00:13:15] Which is good for the people that want that kind of thing, right?
[00:13:18] Because like, it's been a while, like, I feel like there was a, there was a pretty big
[00:13:22] gap between when we started getting like triple A turn-based games again.
[00:13:27] And I feel like Persona 5 kind of kicked that back off to be like, hey, guess what?
[00:13:32] For sure.
[00:13:33] Turn-based is still really fucking cool and nobody's doing it.
[00:13:36] Yeah.
[00:13:37] I, for a long time, we just didn't do that.
[00:13:39] Or they just, like you said, they weren't very high budget or they weren't honestly
[00:13:43] very good sometimes, you know?
[00:13:46] I feel like, yeah, Persona 5 and Dragon Quest 11 was another one that kind of reignited this
[00:13:53] whole thing.
[00:13:53] And then like Octopath comes out and just, yeah, there's so many little things leading
[00:13:59] up to just like this resurgence of turn-based combat.
[00:14:02] And I love it because I grew up on turn-based combat too.
[00:14:07] And there's nothing really quite like it.
[00:14:09] If you, if you like it, you like it.
[00:14:11] If you don't, it's kind of hard to get into.
[00:14:14] I think at this point, I feel like sometimes there's almost like a nostalgia to turn-based
[00:14:19] combat, but some, I've known some people to get into it like late in the game kind of
[00:14:25] thing.
[00:14:26] Like, um, but I feel like it's, it's hard because it's not niche, but it is at the same
[00:14:32] time.
[00:14:32] Like it's, it wasn't niche back then, but it is now.
[00:14:35] It is now.
[00:14:36] But even back then, it wasn't like the tip top.
[00:14:39] I feel like some popular games like that had it like a Final Fantasy seven sort of like
[00:14:45] pushed it a bit more mainstream.
[00:14:47] But like, even then, like, I don't think you saw, well, Aaron, didn't you like, didn't
[00:14:52] Tommy recently get into like, GRPGs or like turn-based?
[00:14:57] Like, yeah.
[00:14:58] Yeah.
[00:14:58] He just recently got like really into RPGs because he started with Tales of Arise, but
[00:15:04] now he's fucking hooked on Octopath Traveler 2, which is great.
[00:15:10] Like he and I both played the first game and we kind of fell off of that because we both
[00:15:15] had other games going on at the time.
[00:15:17] Yeah.
[00:15:17] He loves Octopath Traveler 2.
[00:15:19] And I, I need to get into this game because like the combat is it, man?
[00:15:24] Have Andre, have you ever played any of the Bravely Default games or Bravely Second, which
[00:15:29] I guess is one?
[00:15:30] I, I have barely fucked with it.
[00:15:33] I want to play Bravely Second, though.
[00:15:35] It's on my Steam wish list.
[00:15:36] I definitely want to play that game.
[00:15:38] All.
[00:15:38] Yeah.
[00:15:39] All those games are so good.
[00:15:41] The first one has like, it gets really repetitive on the second half.
[00:15:46] But yeah, Bravely Default 2, which is the newest one.
[00:15:49] That game is so fucking difficult, but it is so good.
[00:15:54] Like it's got kind of almost the same combat system as Octopath in a way, because like enemies
[00:16:00] have different weaknesses and shit that you have to just find out from attacking and then
[00:16:06] doing different moves.
[00:16:07] And they have kind of the same, I remember in Bravely Default, or not Octopath Traveler
[00:16:13] 1, you had this system where you gain like points and you could spend those points to do like
[00:16:18] multiple attacks in one turn.
[00:16:19] Is that right?
[00:16:20] Yes.
[00:16:20] Yeah.
[00:16:21] Bravely Default.
[00:16:22] And I didn't even scratch the surface of that.
[00:16:24] There's that stuff.
[00:16:26] There's like all sorts of spells you can mix and match your classes.
[00:16:30] So you can do all sorts of stuff to the end.
[00:16:32] You can bend Octopath to your will.
[00:16:36] Like that is that and they want you to do that.
[00:16:39] There's a lot of games where it's like, OK, you can't have too much fun because that would
[00:16:42] break the game.
[00:16:42] No, if you want to break the game, you can break the game.
[00:16:45] You can even have I don't I think it's in the first game, too.
[00:16:48] But in Octopath, too, there is surely a thing that you could there's like a perk you can take
[00:16:52] where you can break the nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine damage.
[00:16:56] Yeah.
[00:16:57] So you can do crazy damage if you really want to set yourself up for it.
[00:17:02] You know, OK, break the enemy.
[00:17:05] OK, damage buff this guy.
[00:17:07] Make sure he has four BP points so he can do his big ass attack.
[00:17:10] Right.
[00:17:11] Like if you want to do all that stuff and set it up that way.
[00:17:14] Oh, my God.
[00:17:15] Big ass attack.
[00:17:16] That's what I want to call.
[00:17:17] Fuck limit break.
[00:17:18] Big ass attack is what I really big ass attack.
[00:17:22] You would love bravely.
[00:17:25] Sorry.
[00:17:26] Bravely Default to.
[00:17:28] And if you love bravely default, then you have to play Radiant Historia.
[00:17:34] Oh, is that your picture?
[00:17:36] I that's the PS2 PS2 game, right?
[00:17:40] No, you're thinking of Radadia Stories.
[00:17:42] Radadia Stories.
[00:17:43] Oh, my God.
[00:17:43] I'm so glad you knew what I was talking about.
[00:17:45] Thanks.
[00:17:46] Radiant.
[00:17:46] Radiant.
[00:17:47] Radiant Historia was on.
[00:17:49] I think that was a DS game.
[00:17:51] And they remade it for 3DS and they made it.
[00:17:53] They remade it.
[00:17:54] The DS version or the 3DS version.
[00:17:56] And box.
[00:17:57] I own the physical version of it.
[00:17:58] I'm so proud of that.
[00:17:59] Oh, my God.
[00:17:59] That game is so fucking good.
[00:18:01] So good.
[00:18:02] Yeah.
[00:18:02] Yeah.
[00:18:02] I got it.
[00:18:03] OK.
[00:18:03] Yeah.
[00:18:04] I'll have to put that.
[00:18:05] Yeah.
[00:18:05] Radiant Historia is something that just passed me by.
[00:18:07] I never.
[00:18:07] I never tried it.
[00:18:08] But yeah.
[00:18:09] Bravely Default is definitely moving on my list.
[00:18:11] The thing about Radiant Historia.
[00:18:13] That's like kind of like, you know, you hear a lot of people tout about like, oh, this
[00:18:18] RPG has a really good story.
[00:18:19] I would almost argue that like I haven't finished Radiant Historia.
[00:18:23] I've only ever played about halfway through.
[00:18:26] But everything that I was getting from that game was like, this story is fucking awesome.
[00:18:32] Like this is insanely good.
[00:18:36] And I think I don't I'd have to double check this.
[00:18:41] Aaron, you can fact check me after.
[00:18:42] But I'm ready.
[00:18:45] I'm pretty sure some of the OG Chrono Trigger people worked on this game.
[00:18:49] I think so.
[00:18:51] I forget the name.
[00:18:52] So at least like one or two people.
[00:18:54] And I've carried over.
[00:18:55] I think the composer also composed for this.
[00:18:59] Mitsuda.
[00:19:01] Yeah.
[00:19:01] Yeah.
[00:19:02] Because he's like, he's the Chrono Trigger.
[00:19:05] I love while Aaron's looking that up.
[00:19:07] I love just.
[00:19:10] See, I'm a good host.
[00:19:13] It's not my show, but I'm still a good host.
[00:19:15] It's OK.
[00:19:15] It's OK.
[00:19:16] I love.
[00:19:16] I love, you know, Mitsuda.
[00:19:19] That was sort of like Chrono Trigger was sort of his coming out party.
[00:19:21] That's kind of where everyone like heard of him.
[00:19:23] That was like his big like not coming out like that.
[00:19:26] But you know what I mean?
[00:19:27] Not like that.
[00:19:28] But you know what I mean.
[00:19:30] But then, you know, there's a handful of Nobuo Uematsu tracks also in Chrono Trigger.
[00:19:35] Yeah.
[00:19:36] And I fucking hate to say it.
[00:19:38] Those are like the best ones.
[00:19:40] Tyranno Castle fucking destroys.
[00:19:43] Like that song is incredible.
[00:19:46] I bet Mitsuda was secretly pissed like motherfucker, man.
[00:19:49] This is my this is my chance to break out.
[00:19:52] And this guy is like showing me up right now.
[00:19:55] So I mean, what can you do?
[00:19:57] Right.
[00:19:57] But, you know, still, even though it's I mean, it's tied to RPGs and stuff.
[00:20:02] But like I got to say my new favorite RPG composer is Soken.
[00:20:09] The guy that does all the the guy that does all the Final Fantasy 14 stuff and 16.
[00:20:14] What the fuck, man?
[00:20:16] This guy is like a fucking wizard.
[00:20:18] Yeah.
[00:20:19] He's so great.
[00:20:20] He's so great.
[00:20:21] Oh, damn.
[00:20:22] Yeah.
[00:20:23] OK, you know, he's a mastermind.
[00:20:25] Yeah.
[00:20:25] Say it, Aaron.
[00:20:26] I was gonna say.
[00:20:27] So nobody from Chrono Trigger worked on this game, actually.
[00:20:31] Oh, but the person, the composer for the game, Yoko Shimomura.
[00:20:34] Oh, yeah.
[00:20:35] Oh, that's Mario RPG.
[00:20:36] Yeah.
[00:20:36] Kingdom Hearts and shit.
[00:20:38] Yeah.
[00:20:38] Kingdom Hearts.
[00:20:39] Yeah.
[00:20:39] She's fucking amazing.
[00:20:41] Fucking Gargoyles Quest.
[00:20:42] Street Fighter 2.
[00:20:43] Did she do Little Life?
[00:20:44] Yeah.
[00:20:45] Street Fighter 2 and Final Fight.
[00:20:46] Oh, and Parasite Eve.
[00:20:47] Oh, hell yeah.
[00:20:48] And Tobal.
[00:20:49] And as of recently, Sea of Stars.
[00:20:54] Yeah.
[00:20:56] Really?
[00:20:58] I think so.
[00:20:59] Have you guys not played Sea of Stars?
[00:21:01] I played Sea of Stars.
[00:21:02] I have.
[00:21:02] I hated the main characters because they're so fucking bland.
[00:21:05] But the combat is they're really cool.
[00:21:07] That's exactly how I felt about it.
[00:21:09] I enjoyed the game.
[00:21:10] Yeah, I did not.
[00:21:11] I thought the dialogue sucked.
[00:21:12] I enjoyed fighting everything.
[00:21:14] So I beat the game.
[00:21:14] I thought it was decent enough.
[00:21:16] Garl's cool.
[00:21:18] But like.
[00:21:18] Yeah, Garl's awesome.
[00:21:19] The Sun and Moon characters, they were like.
[00:21:22] They didn't do anything.
[00:21:23] Nah.
[00:21:24] Nothing.
[00:21:25] Garl was the real main character.
[00:21:27] Garl was the real one.
[00:21:30] He's a dude.
[00:21:30] He's a real one.
[00:21:31] So turn-based combat, right?
[00:21:33] By the way, is that.
[00:21:35] Anybody have any final words for Octopath or shit like that?
[00:21:39] No.
[00:21:39] Basically what I said, I only scratched the surface.
[00:21:41] I talked about the break system because that's the most fun part of it for me.
[00:21:45] But like, honestly, there's just so much.
[00:21:47] There's so many spells.
[00:21:49] There's so many different items and everything.
[00:21:51] It's just such.
[00:21:52] It's the best.
[00:21:53] It's my favorite.
[00:21:53] It is absolutely my favorite turn-based combat system now.
[00:21:56] Holy shit.
[00:21:57] Jerry, was Radiant Historia your pick?
[00:22:00] Or is that just when you were kind of just.
[00:22:01] No.
[00:22:02] I just kind of thought about that because you were mentioning Bravely Default.
[00:22:06] And I kind of remember it.
[00:22:08] Not.
[00:22:08] It's not the same, but I don't know.
[00:22:10] Something just clicked in my brain.
[00:22:11] I was like, I hope everybody plays this game.
[00:22:14] But my first pick, because the way that I went into this was thinking about like, not
[00:22:21] as much my favorite turn-based, but just like weird turn-based.
[00:22:27] Like turn-based games that like you go, oh, okay.
[00:22:32] Is it turn-based?
[00:22:33] Yes, it is.
[00:22:34] So, first pick.
[00:22:36] Paper Mario, the Origami King.
[00:22:39] Wow.
[00:22:41] So, this game has a turn-based puzzle battle system?
[00:22:51] Kind of.
[00:22:52] Yeah.
[00:22:53] I don't know how to explain it.
[00:22:55] All I know is, initially I was like, oh man, they're really fucking this Paper Mario series up.
[00:23:01] Like, why don't they just go back to their roots?
[00:23:03] And I was like, you know what?
[00:23:05] I think I tried it at a friend's house.
[00:23:07] We threw it on.
[00:23:08] He had it.
[00:23:09] And I was like, hold on.
[00:23:11] Hold on.
[00:23:11] I think this game might be good.
[00:23:14] And the more we played, the more addicted I was to the combat.
[00:23:18] And in a way that I have, like, kind of the way that you were talking, Dre, about Octopath 2, I just like, I could not put this fucking game down.
[00:23:33] Because the combat itself is so addicting.
[00:23:37] And, like, you legitimately feel like a genius once you figure out, like, the hook of a certain fight.
[00:23:44] Like, yeah, the grunts and stuff, they're easy to kind of just swivel your way around.
[00:23:49] Because it's like a dial that you have to, it's like you're moving inward to attack.
[00:23:55] And then there's, like, attacks that, like, you can do from a range.
[00:23:58] But then, like, the dial is shifting.
[00:24:01] It's very hard to explain.
[00:24:03] So I'd almost recommend anybody that's even at all interested in Paper Mario or even turn-based games, if you wanted to, you know, splice it up in the bedroom tonight.
[00:24:13] You just fucking throw on that Paper Mario.
[00:24:16] Yeah, throw on that Paper Mario.
[00:24:20] It's the game.
[00:24:21] This game has a lot of charm, too.
[00:24:24] It has the Paper Mario charm that you would expect.
[00:24:27] But it's the battle system that I truly believe carries that game.
[00:24:31] Yeah.
[00:24:32] Because of the way it is.
[00:24:34] Because, again, I don't know how else to explain it other than turn-based puzzle combat.
[00:24:39] I think that encapsulates it pretty well, man.
[00:24:42] Have either of you played it?
[00:24:43] I've not played the Origami King.
[00:24:45] I'm kind of a Paper Mario hater.
[00:24:48] I've always found them, like, very glacial.
[00:24:52] Like, I played the first two.
[00:24:53] I played the N64 one.
[00:24:55] I was excited for that to come out.
[00:24:56] And I was just like, this is too long.
[00:24:57] And I tried the Thousand Year Door for, like, 10 hours or something.
[00:25:01] I was like, I cannot, you know.
[00:25:03] I like Super Paper Mario.
[00:25:04] But that's a totally different thing.
[00:25:05] That's not even, like...
[00:25:07] It's still a good game.
[00:25:07] Yeah.
[00:25:08] I really like that game.
[00:25:09] But, like, the turn-based ones, just typically in the humor.
[00:25:12] Just, I don't think it's funny or whatever.
[00:25:14] But, like, yeah.
[00:25:15] But the way you're describing this actually kind of intrigues me.
[00:25:20] I like weird stuff like that.
[00:25:22] So...
[00:25:23] Yeah.
[00:25:23] It's definitely weird.
[00:25:25] And on the last episode that we did, this is not one of my picks.
[00:25:31] It's only not one of my picks because I literally just talked about it.
[00:25:34] But if you haven't heard of Knuckle Sandwich, you have to fucking go with this shit up.
[00:25:38] I don't know what the fuck that is.
[00:25:39] Oh, my God.
[00:25:40] It looks so cool, dude.
[00:25:41] Every single person on the episode last time, they're like, what the fuck is this?
[00:25:44] And then within, like, 10 seconds, they're like, oh, what the fuck?
[00:25:47] This looks crazy.
[00:25:48] Is this, like, on Steam or something?
[00:25:50] Or, like, some sort of...
[00:25:51] It's on Steam.
[00:25:52] Like, WarioWare meets EarthBound.
[00:25:54] Jerry hit it.
[00:25:55] Yeah.
[00:25:55] What?
[00:25:57] Yes.
[00:25:57] So, it's like...
[00:25:59] Think...
[00:25:59] You know how Undertale did the whole, like, hey, you can actually not fight anything and
[00:26:04] you can do everything passively?
[00:26:05] Uh-huh.
[00:26:06] It's not like that, but it is like that.
[00:26:09] Like, all the battle system is is, like, mini games.
[00:26:13] But then it's also intermingled with turn-based combat.
[00:26:16] Fuck, yeah.
[00:26:18] That sounds insane.
[00:26:20] That sounds clinically insane.
[00:26:22] Yeah.
[00:26:22] And it also has, like, EarthBound vibes, like, crazy.
[00:26:26] I fuck with that.
[00:26:26] Yeah, I'm looking at a video.
[00:26:27] I'm looking at a video right now.
[00:26:28] Yeah, this is...
[00:26:29] What the hell is this?
[00:26:31] This is something.
[00:26:32] Wishlist this or buy it right fucking now.
[00:26:34] Both of you.
[00:26:35] Oh, it came out in 2020.
[00:26:36] Of course.
[00:26:37] That's why I miss...
[00:26:38] I mean, you talked about the black hole of the Rona.
[00:26:39] It got...
[00:26:40] It got...
[00:26:41] I think it got announced in 2020.
[00:26:43] It actually only just came out in 2023, like, late.
[00:26:46] Oh, wow.
[00:26:47] Okay.
[00:26:47] I just started playing the game because I had this wishlist for so long.
[00:26:52] And I was like, fuck, when is this game coming out?
[00:26:54] And, like, randomly, a few weeks ago, I was like, when is this coming out?
[00:26:57] I go onto my wishlist.
[00:26:58] I'm like, wait, there's a dollar sign on this.
[00:27:01] Does that mean I could buy this?
[00:27:03] There's a dollar sign.
[00:27:03] And I was like, wait, this is out?
[00:27:07] What the fuck?
[00:27:08] So I just...
[00:27:08] One dollar, please.
[00:27:10] Yeah.
[00:27:11] I think it's pretty cheap.
[00:27:12] It's not terribly expensive.
[00:27:14] And I don't think it's a terribly long game either.
[00:27:18] Yeah, that's...
[00:27:19] I think, again, that's, like, kind of a problem with the Paper Mario stuff for me,
[00:27:22] especially the first one.
[00:27:23] I was like, 30 hours in, I was like, I'm...
[00:27:26] I was already kind of tired of this two worlds ago.
[00:27:29] I really, you know...
[00:27:31] You know.
[00:27:32] But I get it.
[00:27:33] People really love those games.
[00:27:34] I guess they're just not for me.
[00:27:35] But the way you describe the Origami King is definitely interesting.
[00:27:39] Do it.
[00:27:40] You will not be...
[00:27:41] Like, at least look up, like, a gameplay video.
[00:27:44] I can't say that you won't be disappointed with Paper Mario,
[00:27:48] because it's still Paper Mario.
[00:27:51] It's just that the combat is very unique.
[00:27:53] I've never seen anything like the combat before.
[00:27:56] Combat can carry sometimes.
[00:27:57] And if you don't like the combat, then throw that in the garbage
[00:28:00] and go straight to Knuckle Sandwich.
[00:28:02] And I promise you'll like that.
[00:28:04] Well, we just talked about combat carrying in Sea of Stars.
[00:28:07] So, I mean, yeah.
[00:28:08] Sometimes it can carry for me.
[00:28:11] I like that you're telling Andre to go out and buy Paper Mario,
[00:28:14] the Origami King, and he doesn't like it.
[00:28:15] He's throwing the garbage.
[00:28:16] Thereby wasting 60 bucks and then go spend another 20 bucks on Knuckle Sandwich,
[00:28:20] which he may or may not like.
[00:28:22] And then throw that in the trash.
[00:28:24] Yeah, I will say delete from my Steam library.
[00:28:28] Do you want a Wii-fi, Mr. Andre?
[00:28:31] No.
[00:28:31] Or, I mean, if you want, you can get one of those coveted Switch emulators
[00:28:38] and just throw that on and see if you like it.
[00:28:41] Jesus Christ.
[00:28:42] No thanks.
[00:28:43] I like being out of jail.
[00:28:48] That implies that I've been in jail, which I have not been in.
[00:28:52] Oh boy.
[00:28:54] Okay, my first pick.
[00:28:57] I'm doing my absolute damnedest to not talk about the fucking press turn combat system
[00:29:02] from recent Shin Megami Tensei games because I talk about that literally every episode.
[00:29:07] I'll do it for you later.
[00:29:09] Don't worry.
[00:29:09] Okay, cool.
[00:29:10] Awesome.
[00:29:11] Listeners, if you want to hear me talk about it,
[00:29:14] I mean, I think it was our favorite combat systems with the pre-order bonus podcast, boys.
[00:29:20] That was good.
[00:29:21] Yeah, Andre will talk about it.
[00:29:22] And then I'll also join with him about that.
[00:29:25] But have either of you guys ever played Tokyo Mirage Sessions?
[00:29:30] Yes.
[00:29:31] Thank you, Andre.
[00:29:32] I have also, I didn't play it personally, but I've seen somebody play a little bit.
[00:29:38] Oh my God.
[00:29:39] Dude.
[00:29:40] It's good.
[00:29:40] The combat.
[00:29:41] Sing to me.
[00:29:42] The combat is so fucking cool, dude.
[00:29:46] Okay, so Tokyo Mirage Sessions is basically this fusion, this collaboration,
[00:29:52] between Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei.
[00:29:54] Just, it's basically like persona instead of like, instead of high school sim shit,
[00:30:00] you get all these kids who work for this talent agency.
[00:30:03] And like each character excels in something different.
[00:30:06] Like one character is like, she's a cooking show.
[00:30:09] Another character is a musician.
[00:30:11] Another one's like a pop idol or something like that.
[00:30:14] And instead of personas, they have what are called mirages,
[00:30:17] which are based off of different Fire Emblem characters.
[00:30:21] Like the main character, his mirage is Krom from Fire Emblem Awakening.
[00:30:25] Another one is Tharsha, who's also from Awakening.
[00:30:28] And then there's a bunch from like the very first Fire Emblem game.
[00:30:32] And each character has a different, they represent like a different weapon type.
[00:30:37] And they have different like elements of spells and shit like that too.
[00:30:40] So the combat is based very heavily on the press turn system,
[00:30:46] which I will not talk about, but I'll talk about this one.
[00:30:49] I'm just close to it.
[00:30:50] So when you strike an enemy weakness, I guess your characters,
[00:30:55] as you develop and grow the bonds between different characters,
[00:31:00] you'll unlock these passive abilities that basically trigger
[00:31:05] whenever a character strikes a certain enemy's weakness
[00:31:08] or uses a certain element of attack or type of attack,
[00:31:11] like spear or bow or sword or something.
[00:31:13] So say one character strikes an enemy with a sword,
[00:31:16] that'll automatically trigger another character to come in,
[00:31:19] do a spear attack.
[00:31:20] Oh, you did spear attack?
[00:31:22] Guess I'll hop in with a lightning attack.
[00:31:24] And then it's basically just this like ongoing stackable chain of attacks.
[00:31:29] It's so good.
[00:31:30] And at any point, you can also activate,
[00:31:33] there's like another kind of, I think it's called a session attack, I think.
[00:31:36] And they'll do like a duet between two characters or do this big special move.
[00:31:42] And it'll kind of end the combo almost, but you can still keep like,
[00:31:47] it'll end the combo, but you can still keep it going
[00:31:49] and like restacking attacks again and again and again.
[00:31:52] And it's just, it's just this fucking chain of like,
[00:31:55] any single time I got into a battle,
[00:31:57] I would keep track of like the highest number I got in a chain.
[00:32:00] And I would just be like, okay, well now I need to beat 46, 46 combo.
[00:32:06] And yeah, it's just, it's really fucking cool, man.
[00:32:10] It's the coolest shit ever.
[00:32:12] Visually though, what's going on?
[00:32:15] It looks like a performance.
[00:32:16] Yeah.
[00:32:17] Damn near a stage.
[00:32:18] That's, that's the greatest thing about it.
[00:32:20] It's not just that you're chaining these things together.
[00:32:22] It looks literally like you said,
[00:32:24] they're training to be pop idols or whatever they're doing.
[00:32:26] By the way, I love the American guy in that game.
[00:32:29] He's fucking amazing.
[00:32:31] He's like insane, like an insane weeb.
[00:32:34] It's just, it's, it's perfect.
[00:32:36] They played it perfectly.
[00:32:37] They knew exactly what they were doing.
[00:32:40] Yeah.
[00:32:40] It's, it's the visual of it too.
[00:32:42] It literally looks like a musical performance,
[00:32:45] like the most lavish thing you've ever seen.
[00:32:48] I know it never will because Nintendo, but God,
[00:32:51] I wish I could see that game and like,
[00:32:53] like 60 frames a second or, you know,
[00:32:55] like on real hardware.
[00:32:57] I mean, that's the reason why,
[00:32:58] why double dipped on ship.
[00:33:00] It's going to be 10,
[00:33:00] say five on PS five, because I'm like,
[00:33:02] I want to see this.
[00:33:03] I literally just said, you know,
[00:33:05] I just said this,
[00:33:06] that the switch version when I threw,
[00:33:08] like when I seen that and I was like,
[00:33:10] uh, I think,
[00:33:12] I hope this gets a PC port.
[00:33:14] Sure enough.
[00:33:15] Comes out on PC.
[00:33:16] Yeah, sure it does.
[00:33:18] And there isn't a whole lot of games that I feel that way.
[00:33:20] It's not like I sit around and think like,
[00:33:22] oh man, I wish tears of the kingdom.
[00:33:23] I mean, like, look, of course I do,
[00:33:25] but it's not like, okay, whatever.
[00:33:26] It looks how it looks.
[00:33:27] This is one of those games where that visual component is so necessary,
[00:33:33] where I would love to,
[00:33:34] for it to look as good as possible.
[00:33:35] But yeah,
[00:33:36] it looks,
[00:33:36] it looks great as it is.
[00:33:38] I'm not trying to diss of what it looks like right now,
[00:33:40] because it,
[00:33:40] it is amazing.
[00:33:42] The core,
[00:33:43] the core,
[00:33:43] the almost said calligraphy,
[00:33:46] but that's a writing with a pen.
[00:33:47] Uh,
[00:33:48] the core,
[00:33:48] the,
[00:33:49] uh,
[00:33:50] choreography.
[00:33:50] That's not a word.
[00:33:52] Choreography.
[00:33:52] Choreography.
[00:33:53] Oh my fucking God.
[00:33:54] I know the words of the English language.
[00:33:56] Turn your,
[00:33:57] turn your head and cough twice Caligula.
[00:34:01] My favorite turn-based,
[00:34:03] uh,
[00:34:03] combat Caligula.
[00:34:04] Um,
[00:34:05] but yeah,
[00:34:06] no,
[00:34:06] I agree with everything you said.
[00:34:07] It is an incredible game and incredible battle system to look at and fun to do.
[00:34:14] Visuals are,
[00:34:15] you know,
[00:34:15] that's something can I ask you guys like a fine time style,
[00:34:19] like a philosophical question here.
[00:34:21] How much does that like,
[00:34:24] here's the thing.
[00:34:25] Like if,
[00:34:26] if Tokyo Mirage sessions looks like shit,
[00:34:29] nobody cares.
[00:34:29] It's not fun.
[00:34:31] Yeah.
[00:34:31] It might still be some fun to like stack that stuff on top of each other.
[00:34:35] And I know like so far,
[00:34:37] we've been talking about mechanics and how you do stuff in the way they,
[00:34:40] they work in concert,
[00:34:41] LOL concert.
[00:34:42] But if it doesn't look,
[00:34:45] if a game does not look good,
[00:34:47] it just falls apart.
[00:34:50] So like,
[00:34:51] how much are we really talking about?
[00:34:53] Like the mechanics of something and how fun it is to do versus like,
[00:34:57] well,
[00:34:58] I mean,
[00:34:58] it's like what you said about paper Mario,
[00:35:00] the origami King.
[00:35:01] It's the visual of it,
[00:35:02] right?
[00:35:02] It's the dial.
[00:35:03] It's a turn.
[00:35:03] It's not just literally what you're doing.
[00:35:05] It's like,
[00:35:06] here are these flat 2d objects doing this like 3d thing.
[00:35:09] That's very appealing.
[00:35:11] So I think that kind of has to be factored in,
[00:35:15] right?
[00:35:15] Right.
[00:35:15] But I don't think some people would,
[00:35:16] I think some people just take the nuts and bolts of it and say,
[00:35:19] that's the fun part.
[00:35:20] So I guess,
[00:35:21] I guess it just depends.
[00:35:22] I agree with you,
[00:35:23] man.
[00:35:24] Like,
[00:35:25] I'm with you.
[00:35:25] I struggle to think of a good example of where the,
[00:35:29] the combat looked like shit,
[00:35:32] but played well,
[00:35:33] but I a hundred percent agree like that.
[00:35:34] I mean,
[00:35:35] maybe that's why I love Tokyo Mirage sessions and even like,
[00:35:39] uh,
[00:35:39] bravely default and shit like that.
[00:35:41] Maybe that's why I enjoy the combat.
[00:35:42] And that's so much is because not only does it play great,
[00:35:45] you,
[00:35:45] it looks fucking great.
[00:35:46] Like you get all these cool fucking animations to go along with
[00:35:49] everything that kind of keep you visually stimulated and hooked.
[00:35:52] And you're like,
[00:35:53] dude,
[00:35:53] I wonder what this special attack is going to look like this time.
[00:35:56] And it's a dude on a fucking motorcycle running down three,
[00:35:59] like,
[00:36:00] uh,
[00:36:01] circus clown enemies or something.
[00:36:03] Yeah.
[00:36:04] I mean,
[00:36:04] that's,
[00:36:06] that's,
[00:36:06] um,
[00:36:07] I mean,
[00:36:07] Octopath obviously also looks insane.
[00:36:10] So,
[00:36:11] you know,
[00:36:11] yeah,
[00:36:11] I think that's a component that I think is not like,
[00:36:16] I'm trying,
[00:36:17] oh,
[00:36:17] you know what?
[00:36:17] I have an example for myself of a game that like plays well,
[00:36:20] but looks like shit.
[00:36:21] And I'm sorry.
[00:36:22] I know this is going to make people mad,
[00:36:23] but I don't care.
[00:36:24] It's lunar.
[00:36:25] I think lunar doesn't really look that good.
[00:36:27] I don't like the look of lunar.
[00:36:28] I don't,
[00:36:28] I've never liked the way those games look,
[00:36:30] but they're actually,
[00:36:31] it's actually fun to play.
[00:36:32] I don't like chibi looking things.
[00:36:34] You don't like chibi.
[00:36:35] See,
[00:36:35] I do like chibi.
[00:36:36] I like super deformed,
[00:36:37] right?
[00:36:37] I like that stuff,
[00:36:38] but I don't know.
[00:36:39] Lunar just does like visually does not do it for me.
[00:36:42] Even like the PSP version that came out,
[00:36:45] like in the late two thousands,
[00:36:47] I think like even that remake was just like,
[00:36:50] by the way,
[00:36:51] that remake is ghetto as hell.
[00:36:52] They still use the exact same,
[00:36:54] like cut scene from the PS one version,
[00:36:58] like in four by three,
[00:37:00] like the exact same thing.
[00:37:02] They didn't update those at all,
[00:37:03] but the entire rest of the game is 16 by nine redrawn,
[00:37:06] beautiful,
[00:37:07] like PSP art.
[00:37:08] But then they just stuck in those other.
[00:37:09] It's like,
[00:37:10] what's this like a placeholder and they didn't get to make new ones.
[00:37:12] Like,
[00:37:13] I don't understand what happened here.
[00:37:14] Anyway,
[00:37:15] point is,
[00:37:15] yeah,
[00:37:16] lunar,
[00:37:16] I think is like the one example I have of that plays.
[00:37:19] Well,
[00:37:19] looks like shit.
[00:37:20] That makes sense,
[00:37:21] man.
[00:37:21] Yeah,
[00:37:22] I haven't played a whole lot of any lunar game.
[00:37:24] Trey,
[00:37:24] what's your,
[00:37:25] what's your next pick?
[00:37:26] Yeah,
[00:37:27] me.
[00:37:28] Um,
[00:37:29] okay.
[00:37:29] You know what?
[00:37:30] I'll talk about this one.
[00:37:32] I'm gonna,
[00:37:33] I am not a strategy RPG guy,
[00:37:36] right?
[00:37:36] Like I'm straight up,
[00:37:38] too dumb to play them.
[00:37:39] I always try,
[00:37:40] but I just never succeed.
[00:37:41] I,
[00:37:42] all they do is piss me off and I take it out on everyone around me.
[00:37:45] Sorry,
[00:37:46] Steve.
[00:37:46] But like,
[00:37:47] if there's an exception to this rule,
[00:37:50] if there's a,
[00:37:50] yeah,
[00:37:51] poor Steve,
[00:37:51] he's put up with a lot of shit for me.
[00:37:53] If there's an exception to this rule,
[00:37:55] it is shining force.
[00:37:58] And specifically shining for CD,
[00:38:01] which is what I want to talk about today.
[00:38:04] Because like when it comes down to it,
[00:38:06] like strategy RPG encounters are like the simplest ones that there are,
[00:38:11] right?
[00:38:11] Mechanically,
[00:38:12] because you just go to unit,
[00:38:13] press attack.
[00:38:14] They do the thing that they're going to do.
[00:38:16] And,
[00:38:17] you know,
[00:38:17] and depending on the game,
[00:38:19] if it's like advanced wars,
[00:38:20] Oh,
[00:38:20] you're shooting missiles at the airplanes.
[00:38:22] Okay.
[00:38:22] That's going to do big,
[00:38:23] big dick damage.
[00:38:24] Right.
[00:38:25] But like,
[00:38:25] if you don't,
[00:38:26] big penis damage,
[00:38:28] big penis.
[00:38:28] Sorry.
[00:38:28] We always say big,
[00:38:29] big damage.
[00:38:31] We always say big,
[00:38:33] big damage on fine time.
[00:38:34] We also say like,
[00:38:35] if we're talking about versions of games who say like,
[00:38:38] you know,
[00:38:38] there's a special edition and then the basic bitch version.
[00:38:41] You always say basic bitch.
[00:38:43] So,
[00:38:44] but yeah,
[00:38:44] you do big,
[00:38:45] big damage to them,
[00:38:46] but like,
[00:38:47] yeah,
[00:38:47] shining force doesn't have like a whole lot of that.
[00:38:50] And as far as like the units just sort of move how you want them to move.
[00:38:54] And that's like the strategy of the game,
[00:38:56] taking your 10 units in there of like,
[00:38:59] okay,
[00:38:59] I have like some centaur people that can cover a lot of ground.
[00:39:02] I have some monks who can attack and heal.
[00:39:04] I have a straight up healer.
[00:39:06] I have a black mage type.
[00:39:07] I have two bird men that can fly all around the map and it could ignore all the other stuff and just go wherever they want,
[00:39:14] even though they're weak.
[00:39:15] And I love shining force because they let you play however you want to play.
[00:39:20] There's a lot of strategy RPGs where it's like,
[00:39:22] you better take these fucking like archers or whatever,
[00:39:25] or you're not getting past this.
[00:39:27] And shining force just doesn't have that.
[00:39:29] You can truly play how you want.
[00:39:31] And you would might think that would make the game like doll or something.
[00:39:36] Cause it might be so generic.
[00:39:37] Okay.
[00:39:37] This is meant to be played with,
[00:39:38] with any type of types of units,
[00:39:40] but it really doesn't work that way.
[00:39:43] It's I,
[00:39:43] I guess I should have set up right.
[00:39:45] Have you,
[00:39:45] are you guys like shining force people?
[00:39:47] Have you ever shining for them?
[00:39:50] Yeah.
[00:39:51] I stand right here.
[00:39:52] I got into it because,
[00:39:54] um,
[00:39:56] during the pandemic or shortly before the pandemic,
[00:39:58] it was like February,
[00:39:59] 2020,
[00:40:00] I got a Genesis mini.
[00:40:02] And I did.
[00:40:03] And that was,
[00:40:04] it turned out to be a great call because we were locked in our houses for God
[00:40:07] knows how long.
[00:40:07] Right.
[00:40:09] So on that Genesis mini is shining force.
[00:40:11] And I was like,
[00:40:12] I'm not going to play,
[00:40:13] but I got bored enough during lockdown where I was like,
[00:40:15] you know what?
[00:40:16] Fuck it.
[00:40:17] I'll,
[00:40:17] you know what I mean?
[00:40:18] I'll try a little bit.
[00:40:19] I'll say I'll,
[00:40:20] until it pisses me off and I'll turn it off.
[00:40:22] And it never pissed me off.
[00:40:24] Like really,
[00:40:25] I really enjoyed playing it.
[00:40:27] I was like,
[00:40:28] I can't believe I like this.
[00:40:29] So I played shining force that way.
[00:40:31] I played shining force two when it came out on Genesis mini or Genesis mini on
[00:40:36] Genesis,
[00:40:36] uh,
[00:40:36] Nintendo switch online.
[00:40:38] And then shining force CD was on the Genesis mini too.
[00:40:41] And so that's how I mostly played that one.
[00:40:44] And I'm picking shining for CD in particular because almost like autopath,
[00:40:48] it's like 95% the same,
[00:40:49] right?
[00:40:50] Like the shining forces are very like similar to each other.
[00:40:53] Yeah.
[00:40:54] CD,
[00:40:54] I think just has the best map design and scenario design,
[00:40:58] which is like interesting to talk about in the context of like a battle
[00:41:02] system,
[00:41:03] because that's what a strategy RPG is.
[00:41:05] It is map design too.
[00:41:06] It's not just like,
[00:41:08] like I said,
[00:41:08] the nuts and bolts of it are very easy.
[00:41:10] Go to unit,
[00:41:11] press attack,
[00:41:12] whatever.
[00:41:12] Yeah.
[00:41:14] the map design,
[00:41:15] when you factor that into it makes it what it is,
[00:41:19] obviously.
[00:41:20] Um,
[00:41:20] aren't you,
[00:41:20] Aaron,
[00:41:21] you're a big fan of triangle strategy,
[00:41:23] right?
[00:41:24] Hell yeah,
[00:41:24] dude.
[00:41:25] Yeah.
[00:41:25] And that's,
[00:41:26] that's too much for me.
[00:41:26] I'm too dumb to play that game,
[00:41:28] but like the,
[00:41:28] the,
[00:41:29] the,
[00:41:29] the map design of that game is like pretty impeccable.
[00:41:32] I think you would agree.
[00:41:33] I think it's like very cool.
[00:41:35] So like,
[00:41:36] and I think that's,
[00:41:37] I don't know.
[00:41:38] I just think that's very interesting to consider when we're talking about like turn
[00:41:41] based stuff to be like literally the placement of things.
[00:41:45] But anyway,
[00:41:45] yeah.
[00:41:45] Shining for CD is a great,
[00:41:48] great game.
[00:41:49] I think if anyone out there was going to fire up their archival,
[00:41:53] um,
[00:41:54] you know,
[00:41:55] things on their computer and find a shining force to play,
[00:41:57] I think that would be it.
[00:41:59] Dude.
[00:42:00] What I love about shining force so much ties into what you were saying earlier too,
[00:42:05] about the whole,
[00:42:06] um,
[00:42:06] like visual representation of the battles and shit.
[00:42:09] Like if it don't look good,
[00:42:11] it'd be sucking.
[00:42:12] It'd be big sucking.
[00:42:13] Yep.
[00:42:13] Not really,
[00:42:14] but yeah.
[00:42:15] So many,
[00:42:15] so many strategy RPGs of the time.
[00:42:18] They'll just be like,
[00:42:19] like say tactics ogre.
[00:42:20] It'll just be like,
[00:42:21] you move an enemy to a unit and you select attack and they just go bonk.
[00:42:24] And then that's it.
[00:42:25] It'll be like,
[00:42:26] Oh,
[00:42:26] 30,
[00:42:27] 30 damage.
[00:42:27] That's it.
[00:42:28] All right.
[00:42:28] Turn done.
[00:42:28] But like shining force.
[00:42:30] No,
[00:42:31] they do this whole grandiose,
[00:42:32] like so battle scene.
[00:42:34] Yeah.
[00:42:34] Where you're like,
[00:42:35] you're looking over the shoulder of your character.
[00:42:37] Um,
[00:42:37] and they do like a,
[00:42:38] like an attack animation.
[00:42:39] And then the enemy is like,
[00:42:41] Oh,
[00:42:42] it's like,
[00:42:43] yeah,
[00:42:43] it's the classic Camelot view point,
[00:42:46] you know,
[00:42:47] of like their RPGs.
[00:42:48] That's where it started.
[00:42:49] I think in shining force,
[00:42:50] you know,
[00:42:50] that classic over the shoulder,
[00:42:52] big sprite here,
[00:42:53] enemy in the back,
[00:42:54] you know?
[00:42:54] Yeah.
[00:42:55] Yeah.
[00:42:55] That that's kind of the classic,
[00:42:57] like Camelot view.
[00:42:58] So like,
[00:42:58] yeah,
[00:42:59] I,
[00:42:59] and it's so great.
[00:43:00] Yeah.
[00:43:01] Camelot games.
[00:43:02] Oh my God.
[00:43:03] I wish I still had the personnel to make RPGs.
[00:43:05] They obviously don't,
[00:43:06] but they just,
[00:43:08] you know,
[00:43:08] now they're Mario sports forever.
[00:43:09] I love Mario sports.
[00:43:10] I'm not even trying to diss.
[00:43:11] I'm just saying that like,
[00:43:12] that's all they really have the capacity for.
[00:43:15] But,
[00:43:15] um,
[00:43:15] but yeah,
[00:43:16] you're right.
[00:43:16] The battle animations are so good in all the shining forces is,
[00:43:21] but,
[00:43:21] and shining for CD is great about it too,
[00:43:23] since they don't have to worry about space anymore.
[00:43:25] They can have so many different types of them in so many different
[00:43:28] more types of units and all sorts of types of enemies to,
[00:43:31] you know,
[00:43:31] jam in that space.
[00:43:33] Now they don't have to worry about,
[00:43:34] well,
[00:43:34] this game's going to cost a hundred dollars.
[00:43:36] If we add like a few more sprites,
[00:43:38] you know,
[00:43:38] so it's the giving them a freedom to do that is just,
[00:43:42] just great.
[00:43:43] It's,
[00:43:43] it's a really,
[00:43:44] really good game.
[00:43:45] Hell yeah,
[00:43:45] man.
[00:43:45] All of those shining force games are so fucking good.
[00:43:48] The,
[00:43:49] uh,
[00:43:49] I haven't played a whole lot of three though,
[00:43:52] but I mean,
[00:43:52] I've heard that it's,
[00:43:53] it's good.
[00:43:54] I think my Japanese is now just mediocre enough where I could maybe,
[00:44:01] maybe play those maybe,
[00:44:03] uh,
[00:44:04] but I'll,
[00:44:05] I'll have to try.
[00:44:05] My Japanese is terrible enough that I'm sure I could offend somebody.
[00:44:10] I want to see Jared or not,
[00:44:12] oh my God,
[00:44:12] not Jared.
[00:44:13] Sorry.
[00:44:13] Jared.
[00:44:13] What's wrong with me?
[00:44:14] I want to see Jerry live streaming shining force three scenario to totally in
[00:44:20] Japanese.
[00:44:21] And you're like trying to pick apart the kanji.
[00:44:22] You're like,
[00:44:23] yeah,
[00:44:23] okay.
[00:44:23] Yep.
[00:44:24] All right.
[00:44:24] And you're writing stuff down,
[00:44:25] trying to translate.
[00:44:26] And you're like,
[00:44:27] I,
[00:44:28] you're like,
[00:44:29] I eat horse meat.
[00:44:31] Why does this guy eat horse meat?
[00:44:33] This game makes no fucking sense.
[00:44:34] And you're just dragging on the game the entire time for having shit.
[00:44:37] I do.
[00:44:38] I do know a horse meat if that popped up.
[00:44:40] So I,
[00:44:41] I would be able to recognize that.
[00:44:44] You've had horse meat.
[00:44:46] Thanks.
[00:44:46] Duolingo.
[00:44:47] There is a,
[00:44:48] there is a kanji combo for horse meat.
[00:44:50] Yeah.
[00:44:50] It's weird.
[00:44:51] I don't know why there is,
[00:44:52] I guess maybe back in the day they ate horse meat,
[00:44:53] I guess,
[00:44:54] because I don't know why else that word would exist.
[00:44:57] You know,
[00:44:58] a horse tastes fine.
[00:44:59] Probably really fucking tough.
[00:45:01] Yeah.
[00:45:02] See,
[00:45:02] that's what I'm worried about.
[00:45:02] You probably have to cook up like pot.
[00:45:04] Isn't a moose,
[00:45:04] just a horse.
[00:45:05] That's big and brown.
[00:45:08] It's just a cold horse.
[00:45:12] A moose is just a horse with antlers.
[00:45:14] Yeah.
[00:45:15] Holy shit.
[00:45:16] It's a unicorn horse.
[00:45:18] Speaking of horse meat,
[00:45:19] what's your next picture.
[00:45:22] Yeah.
[00:45:23] Speaking of horse meat,
[00:45:25] speaking of can,
[00:45:26] I dabbled,
[00:45:27] I dabbled around a lot of different things when I was trying to pick some of my picks,
[00:45:32] you know,
[00:45:33] stuff like,
[00:45:33] um,
[00:45:34] Baldur's gate came to mind as a recent turn-based stuff.
[00:45:38] Cause that,
[00:45:39] that game was fantastic.
[00:45:39] And I was like,
[00:45:40] Hmm,
[00:45:41] might be a bit of recency bias.
[00:45:42] Yes.
[00:45:42] It's not it.
[00:45:43] That game is incredible,
[00:45:44] but I,
[00:45:45] I wanted to dig a little further.
[00:45:46] I wanted to find something a little weirder.
[00:45:49] Um,
[00:45:50] not that it's weird.
[00:45:52] And this,
[00:45:53] again,
[00:45:53] I'm,
[00:45:54] I'm a retro guy through and through,
[00:45:55] but if you haven't played horse meat,
[00:46:00] 60,
[00:46:00] no,
[00:46:01] I'm just super horse meat.
[00:46:05] If you haven't played vagrant story,
[00:46:07] Oh my God.
[00:46:10] Hell yeah,
[00:46:10] dude.
[00:46:11] Which is a very different type of turn-based combat.
[00:46:16] It's turn-based,
[00:46:17] but it almost has like the follow vats system where like you're targeting different body parts and stuff.
[00:46:25] And this is a game that has kind of like,
[00:46:30] not a,
[00:46:31] it hasn't eluded me or anything.
[00:46:33] It's just,
[00:46:34] I always want to go and play this game and then something else gets in the way.
[00:46:38] And I swear to God,
[00:46:40] 2026 is going to be my year that I finally play vagrant story.
[00:46:47] You're making a promise.
[00:46:48] It's not setting aside some time.
[00:46:49] It's not very long.
[00:46:51] Like it's pretty short.
[00:46:52] It's like 10 hours.
[00:46:53] It's like,
[00:46:54] uh,
[00:46:55] maybe,
[00:46:56] I think it might be more,
[00:46:58] but you might be right.
[00:46:58] I don't,
[00:46:58] I'm not sure.
[00:46:59] I know that it is considered a short game.
[00:47:01] Yeah.
[00:47:02] Um,
[00:47:03] but again,
[00:47:03] it's another game where the combat itself is like the standout.
[00:47:08] For the game itself.
[00:47:11] And I would encourage anybody.
[00:47:14] If you could play this any way you can emulator,
[00:47:17] you want to go and buy it.
[00:47:18] If you have a OG PS one,
[00:47:20] just kicking around,
[00:47:22] play this game.
[00:47:23] If you're in the turn-based RPGs,
[00:47:25] play this game because the combat is fantastic.
[00:47:29] And it's not really like anything else that I've seen before.
[00:47:35] There has like,
[00:47:36] again,
[00:47:36] other than the fallout fat system,
[00:47:39] that's really the only thing I can compare it to.
[00:47:42] That's a good comparison.
[00:47:43] I have played this game.
[00:47:45] I played it in like 2003 or four.
[00:47:48] So,
[00:47:48] so well into the next generation.
[00:47:50] Um,
[00:47:51] but I,
[00:47:52] you know,
[00:47:52] I always heard about this game and I was like,
[00:47:54] I want to try it.
[00:47:55] There is a pawn shop where I lived at the time,
[00:47:57] literally across the street from me.
[00:47:59] And I remember being going there being so pissed.
[00:48:01] They had dragon,
[00:48:02] quite dragon warrior.
[00:48:04] I'm sorry.
[00:48:04] At the time seven on the shelf,
[00:48:06] but they only had disc two.
[00:48:09] I was like,
[00:48:09] yeah,
[00:48:10] what the hell is that?
[00:48:11] So I was pissed.
[00:48:11] I was like,
[00:48:12] Oh my God,
[00:48:12] a dragon,
[00:48:13] dragon warrior seven.
[00:48:14] Okay.
[00:48:14] That's useless.
[00:48:15] But next to that,
[00:48:16] they had a vagrant story.
[00:48:17] So it's like,
[00:48:18] Oh man,
[00:48:18] I've heard of this one too.
[00:48:20] Fucking SWAT team.
[00:48:21] I know,
[00:48:22] right?
[00:48:23] Like how can you always shut down?
[00:48:24] You fucking illegals.
[00:48:25] I mean,
[00:48:26] Jesus.
[00:48:28] Oh my God.
[00:48:29] Like only selling disc two,
[00:48:30] that has to be against the U S constitution.
[00:48:32] It has to be.
[00:48:33] It's illegal.
[00:48:34] But anyway,
[00:48:35] I got the vagrant story.
[00:48:37] They came home and I fucking hated it.
[00:48:42] So here's the thing.
[00:48:43] And this is 20 years ago.
[00:48:45] I want to try that game again and see if I miss something.
[00:48:48] Now I'm 42.
[00:48:50] I'm much,
[00:48:50] I'm much more mature.
[00:48:52] Supposedly.
[00:48:53] You're right.
[00:48:53] Much wiser.
[00:48:54] I'm ripe.
[00:48:55] You know,
[00:48:55] I want to see,
[00:48:56] because here's the thing.
[00:48:57] It looks so cool.
[00:48:58] And I've heard so much.
[00:48:59] I've heard so many things about it.
[00:49:00] Turned into a fine wine.
[00:49:03] I have to wait till 52 to get to be a fine wine.
[00:49:07] But yeah,
[00:49:08] I just,
[00:49:08] I hated it,
[00:49:10] man.
[00:49:10] I could not stand it.
[00:49:11] So again,
[00:49:11] I want to play it again and see if I miss something.
[00:49:15] I probably did.
[00:49:16] I really feel like I did.
[00:49:18] That was one that I always look back on.
[00:49:20] That's like,
[00:49:20] did I really give it a fair shake?
[00:49:22] I tried it for like four hours.
[00:49:24] You know,
[00:49:24] I gave it like,
[00:49:25] you almost beat the game.
[00:49:26] So I almost beat the game.
[00:49:27] I don't know.
[00:49:28] I feel like I missed something.
[00:49:30] I feel like I wasn't understanding some mechanic or something.
[00:49:32] I want to try.
[00:49:33] I did the same goddamn thing with Parasite Eve one.
[00:49:36] Cause I,
[00:49:36] I owned Parasite Eve two.
[00:49:38] And I got that one because I was like,
[00:49:41] Oh,
[00:49:42] in a magazine,
[00:49:43] they said it's like resident evil.
[00:49:44] So I was like,
[00:49:45] Oh,
[00:49:45] this is going to be fucking wild.
[00:49:46] And I,
[00:49:48] I liked Parasite Eve two,
[00:49:50] but it was definitely different from,
[00:49:51] from a resident evil.
[00:49:53] It's not like,
[00:49:54] yeah.
[00:49:55] I didn't realize how different it was from,
[00:49:58] from Parasite Eve one.
[00:50:00] Yeah.
[00:50:00] Parasite Eve one is a completely different game.
[00:50:04] That's not even,
[00:50:05] they're not even the same genre of game.
[00:50:08] Like Parasite Eve one was another one that I just was like,
[00:50:12] I don't need that one,
[00:50:13] I guess.
[00:50:14] And it wasn't until like,
[00:50:16] I want to say like four or five years ago that I went back to it.
[00:50:21] You know?
[00:50:22] Yeah.
[00:50:23] That's yeah.
[00:50:23] I could understand how you feel.
[00:50:25] Someone could feel that way about Parasite Eve.
[00:50:27] I did.
[00:50:27] That didn't quite click with me either.
[00:50:29] I remember my friend,
[00:50:30] let me borrow it.
[00:50:31] And I was just like,
[00:50:33] I think this is okay,
[00:50:34] but I don't really get.
[00:50:35] And then I watched him play it and he was doing some stuff that was
[00:50:38] different for me.
[00:50:38] And I forget what now,
[00:50:39] because it's been so goddamn long.
[00:50:41] So I'm so old and fine wine.
[00:50:43] Like,
[00:50:44] but like,
[00:50:44] yeah,
[00:50:44] but then I remember thinking like,
[00:50:46] Oh,
[00:50:46] you can try that.
[00:50:47] That's what I'm hoping will happen with vagrant story.
[00:50:49] I feel like if I go back,
[00:50:50] I will find something that I missed the first time.
[00:50:53] Yeah,
[00:50:53] sure.
[00:50:54] Is,
[00:50:54] is have they brought vagrant story to like,
[00:50:57] cause I know they bring a lot of like PS one and PS two games to
[00:50:59] PlayStation five is vagrant story on there yet.
[00:51:02] It might be.
[00:51:03] There's a lot of PS one RPGs.
[00:51:04] There's like legend of Dragoon.
[00:51:06] There's like story might be on there.
[00:51:08] Actually.
[00:51:09] I'm not sure,
[00:51:10] but it could be,
[00:51:11] it seems like something they would do.
[00:51:13] I'm looking it up right now.
[00:51:15] It's so good.
[00:51:17] It's not definitely worth a look at the very least.
[00:51:20] It's worth a look.
[00:51:21] Yeah.
[00:51:21] I love the aesthetic.
[00:51:22] I love like the text bubbles.
[00:51:24] They're very like comic book.
[00:51:25] Yeah.
[00:51:25] Cool way.
[00:51:26] You know,
[00:51:27] I liked all that stuff.
[00:51:28] So I just,
[00:51:29] it was just a battle system.
[00:51:30] I just,
[00:51:31] you know,
[00:51:31] it was another,
[00:51:32] not to get too off track here,
[00:51:33] but you know,
[00:51:34] it was another really cool square soft.
[00:51:38] I guess RPG that kind of,
[00:51:40] I,
[00:51:41] I remember playing it at a friend's house cause he rented it.
[00:51:45] And I was like,
[00:51:46] Oh,
[00:51:47] why is it?
[00:51:47] Is this good?
[00:51:48] It's just,
[00:51:49] this doesn't look that good.
[00:51:50] And then years and years later,
[00:51:52] I was like,
[00:51:53] Oh yeah,
[00:51:54] that game that my friend was playing that one time that I just remembered for no reason.
[00:51:58] And I went onto the internet and I downloaded it and threw it on an emulator.
[00:52:01] And God damn it is brave fencer.
[00:52:03] Massage a good fucking game.
[00:52:05] Wow.
[00:52:06] I,
[00:52:06] you know,
[00:52:07] I thought my friend,
[00:52:08] my friend rented at the time.
[00:52:10] We thought the voice acting was like funny and stuff.
[00:52:12] It was like kind of cute.
[00:52:13] Yeah.
[00:52:13] Right.
[00:52:14] But yeah,
[00:52:15] it's,
[00:52:16] I,
[00:52:17] I have a thing with stamina bars sometimes where they really,
[00:52:21] really piss me off.
[00:52:23] I almost feel like no game should have them.
[00:52:25] That's like my,
[00:52:26] that's like my video game doctrine.
[00:52:28] Stamina bars should go out the window.
[00:52:29] And I kind of felt that way about that,
[00:52:31] but I still liked it.
[00:52:32] I thought it was like interesting.
[00:52:33] Right.
[00:52:34] Yeah.
[00:52:34] That's definitely a good,
[00:52:36] a good game.
[00:52:37] It's as close.
[00:52:38] It's as close as Squaresoft that has ever gotten to my,
[00:52:40] one of my favorite games of all time.
[00:52:43] Mystical Ninja 64.
[00:52:45] I've never played it.
[00:52:46] I've never played a Golemon game.
[00:52:48] Trey,
[00:52:48] if you don't do anything,
[00:52:48] I don't know how.
[00:52:49] If you don't do anything tonight,
[00:52:52] I,
[00:52:53] I,
[00:52:54] I,
[00:52:55] I need you to play.
[00:53:00] I need.
[00:53:01] Okay.
[00:53:01] He has a mighty need.
[00:53:05] It's an,
[00:53:06] it's not a want.
[00:53:07] It's a need.
[00:53:08] Okay.
[00:53:08] Gotcha.
[00:53:09] I need mystical to play.
[00:53:11] Mystical Ninja 64 or Golemon's great adventure.
[00:53:14] I strongly recommend mystical Ninja 64 because it's,
[00:53:17] it's really fucking good and very accessible.
[00:53:20] I've always heard so.
[00:53:22] Or if you can't do that,
[00:53:23] just emulate some of the super Nintendo ones.
[00:53:25] There's lots of fan translations and stuff out now.
[00:53:27] Oh yeah.
[00:53:27] There's a ton,
[00:53:28] but I think we only got like one here,
[00:53:29] right?
[00:53:30] One of them.
[00:53:31] And,
[00:53:31] uh,
[00:53:32] they just announced that the switch is getting that,
[00:53:34] uh,
[00:53:34] spiritual successor,
[00:53:36] which I think is fun.
[00:53:37] I saw that back,
[00:53:39] back,
[00:53:39] back on or something.
[00:53:41] That sounds right.
[00:53:42] I don't know what the,
[00:53:42] yeah.
[00:53:43] Bacon,
[00:53:44] bacon,
[00:53:45] bacon,
[00:53:45] pepperoni,
[00:53:46] and pepper,
[00:53:47] bacon,
[00:53:48] pepperoni nipples.
[00:53:50] After the show,
[00:53:52] I already described my nipples to this on this show as milk duds and pepperoni all interchangeably.
[00:53:59] So we're,
[00:53:59] you're going to find out which one they are.
[00:54:01] I've never been more confused and around.
[00:54:05] You're an exclusive nips.
[00:54:07] Dude,
[00:54:08] speaking of nips,
[00:54:09] should we take an ad break?
[00:54:10] Let's take an ad break.
[00:54:11] I think we should.
[00:54:11] Let's pop those tops off.
[00:54:12] It's about that time.
[00:54:13] All right.
[00:54:14] All right,
[00:54:14] folks.
[00:54:15] We'll be right back.
[00:54:15] Guys gone wild.

[00:54:41] And I really mean that.

[00:55:59] it's all sugar free,
[00:56:00] gluten free,
[00:56:00] all that stuff because it's just coffee,
[00:56:02] nothing added to it.
[00:56:03] But they roast each batch of coffee beans to your order.
[00:56:07] And they've got just a bazillion different flavors to choose from.
[00:56:12] They've got your usual French vanilla,

[00:56:17] Uh,
[00:56:17] of course they've got decaf,
[00:56:19] uh,
[00:56:19] single origin coffees like Kenya,
[00:56:22] Guatemala,
[00:56:23] stuff like that.
[00:56:23] Even what they call high voltage,
[00:56:25] which is extra strength,
[00:56:27] extra caffeine.
[00:56:28] But they have all sorts of other awesome,
[00:56:31] kind of out of the box flavors.
[00:56:32] They've got ones like cotton candy,
[00:56:34] maple bacon,
[00:56:36] and even mint chocolate chocolate.
[00:56:37] Chip ice cream.
[00:56:38] And they're always coming up with new crossover flavors.
[00:56:42] Like they've done a bunch for Nightmare Before Christmas,
[00:56:44] Indiana Jones,
[00:56:46] even Spider-Man of all things.
[00:56:48] And they're,

[00:57:53] Oh boy.
[00:57:54] Hey,
[00:57:55] Hey Jerry.
[00:57:56] Yes,
[00:57:57] Aaron.
[00:57:57] Do you,
[00:57:58] I know you love a good drink.
[00:58:00] Are you,
[00:58:01] how do you feel about mixers?
[00:58:03] Do you enjoy mixers with your drink,
[00:58:05] mixing your drink with shit?
[00:58:06] Buddy,
[00:58:07] buddy,
[00:58:07] I mix it up every night.
[00:58:09] Mix it up.
[00:58:09] Okay.
[00:58:10] What if I were to tell you,
[00:58:11] I'd be mixing and splitting and shitting and
[00:58:13] Pissing and pissing and hissing.
[00:58:15] Splitting,
[00:58:15] shitting,
[00:58:16] pissing.
[00:58:18] That's a great combo.
[00:58:20] What?
[00:58:20] So,
[00:58:20] so yeah,
[00:58:21] we all know and love the original mixers like ginger beer,
[00:58:25] orange juice,
[00:58:26] pineapple juice,
[00:58:27] whatever.
[00:58:27] What if I were to tell you there's a way to have a,
[00:58:30] a solid,
[00:58:32] a solid as a drink mixer or like any other kind of food as a drink mixer.
[00:58:37] It's,
[00:58:39] I'll come up with the name in a little bit.
[00:58:40] You can grind down and grind down almost anything into a liquid and,
[00:58:46] and use it as a drink mixer.
[00:58:47] A solid mixer maker.
[00:58:49] I don't know.
[00:58:50] Everybody,
[00:58:51] you could,
[00:58:51] you could take a full,
[00:58:52] a full ass ham,
[00:58:54] just immersion,
[00:58:55] blend that into a throw rum ham in the mix.
[00:58:58] And then throw in the cocktail shaker with some gin,
[00:59:02] ham and gin cocktail,
[00:59:03] baby.
[00:59:03] There you go.
[00:59:04] Pop an olive in that bitch.
[00:59:05] Oh my God.
[00:59:06] Pop an olive dude.
[00:59:07] And like a little,
[00:59:08] well,
[00:59:08] it's like garnish toothpicks.
[00:59:09] You got like a cocktail onion and olive fucking piece of crispy.
[00:59:13] Oh,
[00:59:14] I know exactly what you're talking about now.
[00:59:16] You know,
[00:59:16] I,
[00:59:16] I kind of forgot who the sponsor was,
[00:59:18] but I do remember this.
[00:59:19] They sent us some free kits.
[00:59:20] Uh,
[00:59:21] I threw a lasagna in one and then through root beer on top of that.
[00:59:25] And then just,
[00:59:26] just a touch of asparagus.
[00:59:29] Just,
[00:59:29] I wanted to see if I can get my piss to smell like lasagna,
[00:59:32] asparagus,
[00:59:33] cancer,
[00:59:34] just lasagna piss,
[00:59:35] lasagna piss.
[00:59:36] My favorite kind of piss.
[00:59:38] Really?
[00:59:38] I mean,
[00:59:38] if you,
[00:59:39] dude,
[00:59:40] I feel like blending up a lasagna,
[00:59:41] that'd just be the same thing as a bloody Mary.
[00:59:43] Just like,
[00:59:44] like a shot of vodka with some immersion blended fucking liquefied lasagna.
[00:59:50] That's just a bloody Mary.
[00:59:51] Was that a hint of sausage in there?
[00:59:53] Hmm.
[00:59:53] Yes.
[00:59:54] Oh,
[00:59:54] yummy,
[00:59:54] yummy.
[00:59:56] Also,
[00:59:56] I mean,
[00:59:57] you can't go wrong with throwing a little general sales chicken in there.
[01:00:00] Just,
[01:00:00] just throw a little bit of that in there along with now hear me out along with a
[01:00:06] little peppermint and just a dash of gasoline and get you fired up.
[01:00:12] Yeah.
[01:00:13] Really wakes up the taste buds.
[01:00:14] I say it really does.
[01:00:15] One of my,
[01:00:16] one of my new favorites.
[01:00:17] Thanks to the,
[01:00:17] thanks to this sponsor.
[01:00:18] One of my new favorites is,
[01:00:20] is,
[01:00:20] is taken completely frozen chicken nuggets.
[01:00:24] Don't cook them.
[01:00:26] Don't thaw them out.
[01:00:26] Don't know.
[01:00:27] They're just completely frozen chicken nuggets or regular dinosaur.
[01:00:30] Obviously has to be dinosaur.
[01:00:32] Yeah,
[01:00:32] of course.
[01:00:32] If you don't,
[01:00:33] you're fucking around.
[01:00:34] Not basic bitch nuggets.
[01:00:35] Exactly,
[01:00:36] dude.
[01:00:37] Not those fucking potato shaped nuggets.
[01:00:39] It's bullshit.
[01:00:40] Dinosaur or nothing.
[01:00:41] Uh,
[01:00:42] so completely frozen dinosaur chicken nuggets.
[01:00:45] Toss in some Mountain Dew code red.
[01:00:47] And then,
[01:00:47] uh,
[01:00:47] maybe like a shot of peppermint schnapps.
[01:00:50] There you go.
[01:00:51] Nice Christmassy,
[01:00:53] Christmassy beverage.
[01:00:54] Maybe crack an egg in there.
[01:00:55] Like,
[01:00:55] like eggnog,
[01:00:56] but minus the milk.
[01:00:57] And Aaron,
[01:00:58] I can taste it already.
[01:00:58] We should probably let,
[01:00:59] we should probably let the listeners know that if,
[01:01:01] if you're struggling to find recipe ideas,
[01:01:03] you can go to the,
[01:01:04] the website that is aligned with this,
[01:01:06] uh,
[01:01:07] mixshit.org.
[01:01:08] And you just go there and it's just recipe after recipe after recipe.
[01:01:13] My favorite one that I picked up off of mixshit.org is probably the,
[01:01:16] just,
[01:01:17] you,
[01:01:18] you take a can of compressed air,
[01:01:19] you spray the compressed air into it,
[01:01:22] and then just rum.
[01:01:24] Hmm.
[01:01:25] Ooh.
[01:01:26] Okay.
[01:01:26] That reminds,
[01:01:27] compressed air and rum.
[01:01:28] That reminds me.
[01:01:29] So I,
[01:01:30] I binge bar rescue like all the time and they always,
[01:01:33] bring in like a little smoker gun to like smoke the drink.
[01:01:36] I have one of those.
[01:01:37] That,
[01:01:37] that sounds like,
[01:01:38] like that,
[01:01:38] but yeah,
[01:01:39] with,
[01:01:39] with compressed air as that,
[01:01:40] like metallic,
[01:01:42] like,
[01:01:43] like,
[01:01:43] I don't know.
[01:01:44] Yeah.
[01:01:44] Metallic kind of taste to it.
[01:01:46] Cold.
[01:01:46] Andre,
[01:01:47] what's your favorite,
[01:01:48] what's your favorite new beverage that you've cooked up from,
[01:01:50] uh,
[01:01:50] mixshit.org?
[01:01:52] Oh my God.
[01:01:54] You know,
[01:01:55] I just,
[01:01:56] I keep it classic.
[01:01:57] I like to keep it in the same family of flavors.
[01:01:59] So I'll take the pepperoni pizza.
[01:02:01] I'll take the olive pizza.
[01:02:02] All the single topping pizzas,
[01:02:04] right?
[01:02:04] The artichoke heart pizza.
[01:02:06] I'll put them all in,
[01:02:07] put it in the wings,
[01:02:08] the garlic Parmesan wings,
[01:02:10] put in a couple cheesy bread stick or two.
[01:02:12] And then you have like a nice pizza blend.
[01:02:14] You know,
[01:02:15] it's all the pizza.
[01:02:16] It's all in the pizza family,
[01:02:17] but you get all of it.
[01:02:18] Top it off with some Pepsi.
[01:02:19] If you like pizza hut,
[01:02:20] you know,
[01:02:21] top it off some Coke.
[01:02:22] If you'd like dominoes,
[01:02:23] right.
[01:02:23] You can kind of flavor that up and you'll get to those flavors that way.
[01:02:27] It's,
[01:02:28] it's really great.
[01:02:28] Flav it up.
[01:02:29] Then you got to add alcohol too.
[01:02:31] It's a drink mix.
[01:02:32] You got to add maybe like,
[01:02:33] just,
[01:02:33] just throw in a can of Bush light.
[01:02:36] Here you go.
[01:02:37] Now you're getting PTs.
[01:02:38] You guys are familiar.
[01:02:39] Oh yeah.
[01:02:40] A village draft.
[01:02:42] Fuck.
[01:02:43] You guys are familiar with a Jager bomb,
[01:02:45] right?
[01:02:45] Oh yeah.
[01:02:47] So on mixed shit.
[01:02:48] They have an alter,
[01:02:49] like they have just a slight altercation,
[01:02:52] not altercation.
[01:02:53] Sorry.
[01:02:53] That's a fight.
[01:02:55] Just a slight alteration to the standard recipe for a Jager bomb.
[01:03:01] So what you do is,
[01:03:02] and now this is going to be very specific and some folks might not be able to do this,
[01:03:05] but let me tell you,
[01:03:06] I've tried this myself and it is fantastic.
[01:03:09] Fantastic.
[01:03:09] What you want to do is you want to get the standard recipe for Jager bomb,
[01:03:13] throw a little red bull for a little Jager bomb,
[01:03:15] and just a,
[01:03:16] just a,
[01:03:16] a pinch of grandma's ashes.
[01:03:19] Just a,
[01:03:19] just a little bit.
[01:03:20] Just throw those in there.
[01:03:22] It gives it like a very milky substance.
[01:03:24] You want to,
[01:03:25] you want to really spice it up?
[01:03:26] Throw grandpa's ashes in there too.
[01:03:29] Kablam dynamite.
[01:03:30] Get a,
[01:03:30] you know,
[01:03:31] a lime wedge to garnish the side of the drink.
[01:03:33] Here you go.
[01:03:34] It's the cremation.
[01:03:35] Let's not get carried away.
[01:03:36] I mean,
[01:03:36] come on.
[01:03:37] Oh,
[01:03:37] sorry.
[01:03:38] Yeah,
[01:03:38] that's too much.
[01:03:40] I mean,
[01:03:40] please.
[01:03:41] I mean,
[01:03:41] this is a family show.
[01:03:45] But mothers lock up your daughters or whatever the fuck.
[01:03:47] Don't know what to do with those old iPhones?
[01:03:49] Throw them right in the fucking blender.
[01:03:50] Mixshit.org.
[01:03:52] That's right.
[01:03:53] These blenders are specially made to pulverize any solid or semi-solid matter into a fine liquid.
[01:04:00] You can see right through it.
[01:04:01] Just,
[01:04:02] well,
[01:04:02] I guess you can't see through most liquids.
[01:04:04] It's,
[01:04:04] it turns,
[01:04:05] it turns solids or mostly solids into a liquid is what I'm trying to say here.
[01:04:09] Say you want.
[01:04:11] Sorry.
[01:04:12] Go.
[01:04:13] Say,
[01:04:14] say,
[01:04:15] say for instance,
[01:04:16] you want to take an entire orange with the peel.
[01:04:20] Take that entire fucking orange with the peel.
[01:04:22] Blend it along with,
[01:04:24] we'll say just like an entire can of Mountain Dew in the can still.
[01:04:28] Keep it in the can.
[01:04:29] You're going to have that a little extra bit.
[01:04:30] Spark.
[01:04:31] Yeah.
[01:04:31] Yeah.
[01:04:32] And then,
[01:04:32] that's smart.
[01:04:34] And then you do a couple dashes of bitters,
[01:04:37] which I only learned from Bar Rescue.
[01:04:39] And maybe top it off with some,
[01:04:41] some sparkling soda and some tequila.
[01:04:44] Delicious.
[01:04:45] Now,
[01:04:45] Aaron,
[01:04:46] should we tell them about the DLC?
[01:04:47] I think we should tell them about the DLC.
[01:04:49] Please don't.
[01:04:50] It's got to have DLC.
[01:04:51] It has the DLC.
[01:04:53] Let me tell you.
[01:04:54] If you go to mixshit.org and you use the code SuperPodSaga,
[01:04:57] you're going to get an unlock for the DLC.
[01:05:00] You're going to get fucking killed.
[01:05:02] And what that does is it gives you themed recipes.
[01:05:06] Okay.
[01:05:07] We got Lion King.
[01:05:08] We got Taco Bell.
[01:05:09] Barack Obama.
[01:05:10] Two girls,
[01:05:11] one cup.
[01:05:11] We got fucking all that shit.
[01:05:17] I can't wait.
[01:05:19] Is the two girls,
[01:05:21] one cup,
[01:05:21] just like a cup and shit blended together?
[01:05:25] With some peppermint schnapps.
[01:05:28] Just in time for Christmas.
[01:05:33] Hey,
[01:05:34] grandma,
[01:05:34] come out here.
[01:05:35] I want to show you the Christmas tree.
[01:05:40] Jerry,
[01:05:41] this smells like shit.
[01:05:43] Shut the fuck up,
[01:05:44] grandma.
[01:05:45] Just drink your shit.
[01:05:49] Oh,
[01:05:49] my favorite one is the.
[01:05:53] He's going to have a heart attack.
[01:05:55] My favorite one is the Pinocchio where you just take a puppet,
[01:06:00] a wooden fucking puppet,
[01:06:02] blend it up with a cricket,
[01:06:03] toss in a cricket.
[01:06:04] And then just a little bit.
[01:06:06] We'll go with more mint schnapps because I can't get enough of that shit.
[01:06:10] Is that in the theme DLC?
[01:06:11] Is that in the DLC?
[01:06:12] I think it is.
[01:06:13] It's in the DLC.
[01:06:14] It's definitely in the DLC.
[01:06:15] Super Pot Saga recipe book,
[01:06:17] baby.
[01:06:18] Yeah.
[01:06:18] Hell yeah.
[01:06:19] Act now.
[01:06:20] 69% off.
[01:06:22] 99,
[01:06:22] 99,
[01:06:23] 99.
[01:06:25] Four easy payments of 69,
[01:06:28] 69,
[01:06:28] 69,
[01:06:29] 69.
[01:06:30] Call now.
[01:06:32] Thank you for sponsoring this episode.
[01:06:34] Mixshit.org.
[01:06:35] Mixshit.org.
[01:06:38] Mixshit.org.
[01:06:42] Andre,
[01:06:43] thank the sponsor.
[01:06:45] Oh,
[01:06:46] I'm sorry.
[01:06:46] Thank you.
[01:06:47] Mixshit.org.
[01:06:49] I very much appreciate your sponsoring of fight.
[01:06:52] I mean,
[01:06:53] a super pod saga.
[01:07:15] We're back.
[01:07:16] Where are we?
[01:07:17] Where?
[01:07:17] Whoa.
[01:07:18] What?
[01:07:19] Who?
[01:07:20] Are we back?
[01:07:21] Wait,
[01:07:22] let me check my watch.
[01:07:24] We're back.
[01:07:25] Okay.
[01:07:25] Let me check my sun dial.
[01:07:27] Let me check my balls.
[01:07:29] We're back.
[01:07:32] Yeah,
[01:07:32] we're back.
[01:07:33] Oh,
[01:07:34] man.
[01:07:35] Okay.
[01:07:36] What's this lump?
[01:07:38] It's his balls.
[01:07:39] Were you listening?
[01:07:40] I was going to say that too.
[01:07:41] Damn.
[01:07:43] It was Jerry's turn last,
[01:07:45] right?
[01:07:45] Because you did
[01:07:48] Vagrant Story.
[01:07:48] Vagrant Story.
[01:07:50] Okay.
[01:07:50] So,
[01:07:51] listen up.
[01:07:53] Here's a story.
[01:07:55] I'm going to talk about
[01:07:56] a little guy
[01:07:56] who likes to play
[01:07:58] Grandia 2.
[01:08:00] Oh,
[01:08:01] we're here.
[01:08:01] We're finally here.
[01:08:03] We're here,
[01:08:03] dude.
[01:08:04] Okay.
[01:08:05] Tell me about it
[01:08:06] because I've never played it.
[01:08:07] Oh,
[01:08:08] Jerry.
[01:08:09] You're going to hear
[01:08:09] all about it next month
[01:08:10] on Fine Time.
[01:08:11] I'll tell you that much.
[01:08:14] Andre and I
[01:08:15] gushed all about it.
[01:08:17] Oh,
[01:08:17] man.
[01:08:17] Is it Grandia
[01:08:17] or Grandia?
[01:08:19] Oh,
[01:08:19] you say Grandia.
[01:08:20] I don't know.
[01:08:20] I say Grandia.
[01:08:21] No,
[01:08:22] we said Grandia
[01:08:22] for like two hours.
[01:08:24] So,
[01:08:25] I hope that's it.
[01:08:26] I guess,
[01:08:27] I guess I was just saying
[01:08:28] the Canadian way.
[01:08:30] Grandia.
[01:08:32] Grandia.
[01:08:33] So,
[01:08:34] Grandia.
[01:08:34] So,
[01:08:35] yeah,
[01:08:36] Grandia,
[01:08:36] Grandia 2,
[01:08:37] Grandia 2,
[01:08:39] Grenadine 2.
[01:08:40] Grenadine 2.
[01:08:41] It's like,
[01:08:42] is this shit that'll work?
[01:08:45] It's this cool mix
[01:08:48] of like turn-based
[01:08:51] and like kind of like
[01:08:52] a strategy RPG
[01:08:53] in a way,
[01:08:53] kind of.
[01:08:54] So,
[01:08:55] like,
[01:08:56] throughout combat,
[01:08:57] there's this little timeline
[01:08:58] on the bottom of the screen
[01:08:59] and your party members
[01:09:02] and the enemies
[01:09:03] all move along this timeline.
[01:09:04] Most of it is
[01:09:05] you're in the wait period
[01:09:06] based on the ATV gauge
[01:09:09] kind of
[01:09:09] in Final Fantasy.
[01:09:11] And then you get to
[01:09:12] this small section
[01:09:13] where you input commands
[01:09:15] for your characters
[01:09:16] and then
[01:09:17] depending on like what
[01:09:18] level their attacks are
[01:09:19] or their spells and shit,
[01:09:21] you might have to wait
[01:09:21] a little bit for them
[01:09:22] to actually execute
[01:09:23] their attacks.
[01:09:24] So,
[01:09:25] combat
[01:09:25] a lot of the time
[01:09:26] is this like
[01:09:29] choreographed dance.
[01:09:31] You'll have to
[01:09:32] because your characters
[01:09:33] if they're too,
[01:09:34] like if you choose,
[01:09:35] say you choose like Ryudo,
[01:09:37] the main character,
[01:09:37] to go do a melee attack
[01:09:38] against this like
[01:09:39] fucking bug
[01:09:40] and if the characters
[01:09:42] have to move up
[01:09:44] to an enemy
[01:09:44] and get within range
[01:09:46] to be able to do
[01:09:47] a melee attack.
[01:09:48] So,
[01:09:48] if the enemy
[01:09:48] maybe moves too far
[01:09:50] to the right,
[01:09:51] Ryudo
[01:09:52] will get tired
[01:09:53] because he ran too much
[01:09:55] and will be able
[01:09:56] to do his attack.
[01:09:56] I love that,
[01:09:57] that little sweat marks
[01:09:59] is like,
[01:09:59] that's enough for me,
[01:10:00] I guess.
[01:10:01] No more turn.
[01:10:03] Yeah.
[01:10:04] You'll have to anticipate
[01:10:05] like when enemies
[01:10:06] are going to,
[01:10:08] basically you can time
[01:10:09] your attacks
[01:10:09] to do,
[01:10:11] fuck,
[01:10:12] Andre help me out.
[01:10:13] I'm blanking a little bit.
[01:10:14] I'm sorry,
[01:10:14] I didn't want to interrupt.
[01:10:15] No, you're good.
[01:10:16] No, you could,
[01:10:17] so basically
[01:10:17] I think the best way
[01:10:19] to say it
[01:10:19] is like the,
[01:10:21] you can,
[01:10:21] almost like what I was saying
[01:10:22] about Octopath
[01:10:23] with the break system
[01:10:24] where it's like
[01:10:25] you can prevent them
[01:10:26] from attacking
[01:10:27] and that's like
[01:10:27] the name of the game.
[01:10:28] Yeah.
[01:10:29] That's also the name
[01:10:29] of the game in Grandia 2.
[01:10:30] You got it now?
[01:10:31] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[01:10:32] Okay.
[01:10:32] Yeah, so your melee attacks
[01:10:33] you can choose between
[01:10:34] like a combo attack
[01:10:35] which would be like
[01:10:36] more than one attack
[01:10:37] in a row
[01:10:37] or a critical attack
[01:10:39] and yeah,
[01:10:40] so with your combo attacks
[01:10:42] you'll do more than
[01:10:43] one hit against
[01:10:43] or one or more hits
[01:10:45] against an enemy
[01:10:45] and you can use that
[01:10:46] to either like
[01:10:47] delay their turn
[01:10:48] to where
[01:10:49] maybe like one of
[01:10:50] your other characters
[01:10:50] can come in
[01:10:51] and combo more attacks
[01:10:52] on them
[01:10:53] and just clobber them
[01:10:54] and just fucking
[01:10:54] annihilate them
[01:10:55] or if you do
[01:10:56] a critical attack
[01:10:57] when an enemy
[01:10:58] has inputted a command
[01:10:59] or has chosen a command
[01:11:01] or whatever
[01:11:01] you can just cancel
[01:11:02] out their fucking turn
[01:11:03] and that even works
[01:11:04] against bosses
[01:11:05] which is really
[01:11:06] really fucking cool.
[01:11:07] Yeah, because
[01:11:08] that's the name
[01:11:09] of the game
[01:11:09] because like
[01:11:09] if you really
[01:11:10] when those bosses
[01:11:12] are gearing up
[01:11:12] for their like
[01:11:13] big ass spells
[01:11:14] they're big dick spells
[01:11:16] I'm sorry
[01:11:17] big dick spells
[01:11:18] when they're gearing up
[01:11:19] for the big dick spells
[01:11:20] you can literally
[01:11:21] just cancel them
[01:11:22] out of doing anything
[01:11:23] provided again
[01:11:24] like you said
[01:11:24] spatially
[01:11:25] you're close enough
[01:11:26] to be able to
[01:11:27] it's like okay
[01:11:28] he
[01:11:28] you look at the
[01:11:29] look at the gauge
[01:11:30] and when that thing
[01:11:31] fills up
[01:11:31] he does the attack
[01:11:32] so you kind of
[01:11:33] have to gauge
[01:11:33] okay
[01:11:34] if I'm Ryudo
[01:11:35] again
[01:11:36] do I have time
[01:11:37] to run up to him
[01:11:38] wind up the
[01:11:39] the cancel attack
[01:11:41] and actually like
[01:11:42] do it
[01:11:42] yeah
[01:11:43] or
[01:11:43] should I
[01:11:45] just sit here
[01:11:45] and eat it
[01:11:46] and use defend
[01:11:47] and that's one thing
[01:11:48] I like about
[01:11:48] Grandia 2 as well
[01:11:49] is that
[01:11:50] the defense option
[01:11:51] is actually really useful
[01:11:53] I feel like in a lot of RPGs
[01:11:54] it feels like an afterthought
[01:11:55] it's like I don't know
[01:11:56] what else to do
[01:11:57] I'll just defend
[01:11:57] in Grandia 2
[01:11:59] it becomes almost like
[01:12:01] you know
[01:12:02] you understand
[01:12:03] that you can't
[01:12:04] prevent them
[01:12:04] from doing this
[01:12:05] so the defense
[01:12:06] and you defend a lot too
[01:12:07] it's not just like
[01:12:08] half damage
[01:12:08] it's like a lot
[01:12:09] yeah
[01:12:10] so when you choose that
[01:12:11] it's very
[01:12:12] it's very useful
[01:12:13] to keep yourself alive
[01:12:15] from like
[01:12:15] a devastating attack
[01:12:16] that you know
[01:12:17] you can't prevent
[01:12:18] and then as the game
[01:12:19] goes along
[01:12:20] your
[01:12:20] your cancel attacks
[01:12:22] like especially
[01:12:22] your like
[01:12:23] character specific
[01:12:24] special moves
[01:12:25] those will get
[01:12:26] faster and faster
[01:12:27] to the point of
[01:12:28] almost being like
[01:12:29] instant
[01:12:29] you know like
[01:12:30] I loved getting
[01:12:31] like Elena's
[01:12:33] impact bomb
[01:12:33] here comes my
[01:12:34] impact bomb
[01:12:35] all the way up
[01:12:36] to like five stars
[01:12:38] or whatever
[01:12:38] because that shit
[01:12:39] is like instant
[01:12:40] you can cancel
[01:12:41] you can get in front
[01:12:42] of anybody in line
[01:12:43] and it's very
[01:12:44] you know
[01:12:45] I love that kind of
[01:12:46] like power
[01:12:47] I don't know
[01:12:47] if power creep
[01:12:48] is the right term
[01:12:49] but like
[01:12:49] you feel so much
[01:12:51] more powerful
[01:12:51] throughout the game
[01:12:52] as you get to the end
[01:12:53] yeah
[01:12:54] yeah
[01:12:55] and same with
[01:12:55] Ryudo's
[01:12:55] flying tensei
[01:12:56] sky take flight
[01:12:58] flying tensei
[01:12:59] ken
[01:12:59] I love it
[01:13:01] it's so good
[01:13:01] and like even
[01:13:02] the original
[01:13:02] yeah dude
[01:13:04] with those
[01:13:05] ps2
[01:13:06] dreamcast
[01:13:07] yeah don't play
[01:13:08] the ps2 version
[01:13:09] really
[01:13:10] yeah
[01:13:11] it's the worst
[01:13:12] one
[01:13:12] I would say
[01:13:13] I would say
[01:13:13] emulate dreamcast
[01:13:14] or play
[01:13:15] grandia hd
[01:13:16] I have a
[01:13:17] I have a dreamcast
[01:13:18] I would definitely
[01:13:19] go that way
[01:13:20] it was still
[01:13:21] the era of
[01:13:21] dreamcast games
[01:13:22] on ps2
[01:13:23] ports to ps2
[01:13:24] just not being
[01:13:24] that good
[01:13:25] and grandia 2
[01:13:26] is one of them
[01:13:27] I keep hearing
[01:13:29] this too
[01:13:29] I keep hearing
[01:13:30] a lot of people
[01:13:30] be like
[01:13:31] oh that's
[01:13:32] a really good
[01:13:33] ps2 game
[01:13:33] but it's
[01:13:34] better on
[01:13:34] dreamcast
[01:13:35] yeah
[01:13:35] it just wasn't
[01:13:37] in like 2000
[01:13:38] 2001
[01:13:39] like the early
[01:13:40] dreamcast ports
[01:13:40] just did not
[01:13:41] work
[01:13:42] I don't know
[01:13:42] they just weren't
[01:13:43] as good
[01:13:44] another one too
[01:13:45] that I
[01:13:45] not to get
[01:13:46] too off topic
[01:13:47] here but
[01:13:47] um
[01:13:48] makin x
[01:13:49] is on dreamcast
[01:13:50] ooh
[01:13:51] really fucking
[01:13:52] cool game
[01:13:53] it's in first person
[01:13:54] and it got
[01:13:55] ported to
[01:13:56] I think
[01:13:57] ps2
[01:13:57] it did
[01:13:58] and it's
[01:13:59] not as good
[01:14:00] yeah
[01:14:01] it's just
[01:14:01] not as good
[01:14:02] I I don't
[01:14:03] I'm not even
[01:14:03] sure they came
[01:14:04] here I played
[01:14:04] an emulation
[01:14:05] like not
[01:14:07] too long ago
[01:14:07] yeah it's
[01:14:08] just not as
[01:14:08] good it's
[01:14:08] better on
[01:14:09] dreamcast
[01:14:09] yeah I
[01:14:09] don't know
[01:14:10] why a lot
[01:14:10] of those
[01:14:10] games
[01:14:11] really fucking
[01:14:11] cool
[01:14:11] it's such
[01:14:12] a good
[01:14:13] game
[01:14:13] that's like
[01:14:13] the first
[01:14:14] megaton
[01:14:14] game of
[01:14:15] any type
[01:14:15] that I've
[01:14:15] ever played
[01:14:16] honestly
[01:14:16] so it's
[01:14:17] oh really
[01:14:18] yeah
[01:14:18] so
[01:14:19] oh yeah
[01:14:20] yeah but
[01:14:20] anyway yeah
[01:14:21] but uh
[01:14:22] grandia 2
[01:14:22] definitely
[01:14:23] anyone out there
[01:14:24] curious about it
[01:14:24] definitely play
[01:14:25] the hd version
[01:14:26] that's around
[01:14:26] on everything
[01:14:27] now or play
[01:14:28] it on
[01:14:28] dreamcast
[01:14:29] if you if
[01:14:30] you can
[01:14:30] but yeah I
[01:14:31] love like
[01:14:32] like um
[01:14:33] like I was saying
[01:14:33] about octopath
[01:14:34] your offense
[01:14:35] is your defense
[01:14:36] it definitely
[01:14:36] is here man
[01:14:37] because you
[01:14:38] need to
[01:14:39] really keep
[01:14:40] them off of
[01:14:41] you and if
[01:14:41] you don't
[01:14:42] you can get
[01:14:43] you can die
[01:14:43] pretty fast
[01:14:44] it's not like
[01:14:45] a super hard
[01:14:45] game grandia 2
[01:14:46] but as long
[01:14:48] as you keep
[01:14:48] on top of it
[01:14:49] and you
[01:14:49] understand what
[01:14:50] the battle
[01:14:51] system is
[01:14:52] giving you
[01:14:53] and how to
[01:14:53] utilize those
[01:14:54] things because
[01:14:55] if you don't
[01:14:56] you're gonna
[01:14:57] get overwhelmed
[01:14:57] pretty quickly
[01:14:58] but as long
[01:14:58] as you keep
[01:14:59] like relatively
[01:15:00] good at it
[01:15:00] you'll be
[01:15:01] totally fine
[01:15:01] yeah dude
[01:15:02] yeah and
[01:15:03] they have
[01:15:04] a cool
[01:15:05] this doesn't
[01:15:06] really tie
[01:15:06] into like
[01:15:06] the topic
[01:15:07] per se
[01:15:07] but the
[01:15:08] the progression
[01:15:08] system is
[01:15:09] really cool
[01:15:09] too because
[01:15:10] you can equip
[01:15:10] different types
[01:15:11] of like
[01:15:11] what like
[01:15:12] the skill books
[01:15:13] you can teach
[01:15:14] characters different
[01:15:14] little types
[01:15:15] of skills
[01:15:15] that'll in turn
[01:15:17] give them
[01:15:18] uh some like
[01:15:19] pass abilities
[01:15:19] in combat
[01:15:20] like this character
[01:15:21] can move faster
[01:15:22] and so you can
[01:15:23] kind of beef up
[01:15:24] characters to run
[01:15:25] faster so in turn
[01:15:26] that'll help you
[01:15:27] with timing
[01:15:28] those attacks
[01:15:28] to go like
[01:15:29] cancel bosses
[01:15:30] and shit like
[01:15:30] that or
[01:15:31] uh there's
[01:15:32] like some
[01:15:32] skills to
[01:15:32] make the
[01:15:32] act gauge
[01:15:33] run faster
[01:15:34] as well
[01:15:35] and yeah
[01:15:35] there's all
[01:15:36] sorts of
[01:15:36] cool ways
[01:15:37] to kind
[01:15:37] of work
[01:15:38] around the
[01:15:38] system
[01:15:38] like the
[01:15:39] graphics are
[01:15:40] so fucking
[01:15:40] good
[01:15:40] the music
[01:15:41] is so
[01:15:42] fucking
[01:15:42] good
[01:15:42] the story
[01:15:43] is just
[01:15:43] bonkers
[01:15:43] and fucking
[01:15:45] hilarious
[01:15:45] and the music
[01:15:46] is incredible
[01:15:47] I rarely
[01:15:49] enjoyed putting
[01:15:50] together anything
[01:15:50] for fine time
[01:15:51] more than us
[01:15:52] putting together
[01:15:52] us talking about
[01:15:53] the music of
[01:15:53] grandia 2
[01:15:54] that will
[01:15:54] in a few
[01:15:55] weeks here
[01:15:56] oh my god
[01:15:57] I just loved
[01:15:58] it took me so
[01:15:59] long because
[01:15:59] I was just
[01:15:59] sitting here
[01:16:00] listening to
[01:16:00] music for so
[01:16:01] long it was
[01:16:02] just it's
[01:16:04] it's just
[01:16:04] great yeah
[01:16:05] grandia 2
[01:16:06] I said um
[01:16:07] octopath is
[01:16:08] now my favorite
[01:16:09] turn-based combat
[01:16:10] before that it
[01:16:11] was grandia 2
[01:16:11] and you know
[01:16:13] what in some
[01:16:13] ways it still
[01:16:14] kind of is
[01:16:14] like if I
[01:16:15] I almost can't
[01:16:16] even pick now
[01:16:16] that we talked
[01:16:17] about it it's
[01:16:18] like they're
[01:16:18] they're the
[01:16:19] two tippy
[01:16:19] tops for
[01:16:20] me tippy
[01:16:20] tops
[01:16:21] tippy tops
[01:16:22] so yeah
[01:16:23] tippy titty
[01:16:24] tops tippy
[01:16:25] titty tops
[01:16:27] tippy titty
[01:16:28] tops
[01:16:28] we're gonna
[01:16:29] oh wait
[01:16:29] that's a
[01:16:30] different
[01:16:30] product we
[01:16:31] already had
[01:16:31] our commercial
[01:16:33] yeah man
[01:16:34] I can't say
[01:16:34] enough good
[01:16:35] oh I
[01:16:35] maybe you
[01:16:36] should move
[01:16:36] on before
[01:16:37] I get
[01:16:39] so deep
[01:16:39] more deep
[01:16:40] in the
[01:16:40] grandia 2
[01:16:40] one of the
[01:16:41] best maybe
[01:16:41] my favorite
[01:16:42] jrpg overall
[01:16:43] ever
[01:16:43] wow
[01:16:44] it's a
[01:16:45] fucking awesome
[01:16:46] game man
[01:16:47] I mean
[01:16:47] it is your
[01:16:48] turn Andre
[01:16:49] so you can
[01:16:49] either talk
[01:16:50] more about
[01:16:50] grandia 2
[01:16:51] or
[01:16:51] no
[01:16:53] we'll
[01:16:53] we'll talk
[01:16:54] about that
[01:16:55] press turn
[01:16:55] system
[01:16:56] we
[01:16:56] we
[01:16:56] mentioned
[01:16:57] earlier
[01:16:57] and I
[01:16:58] want to
[01:16:58] talk about
[01:16:59] it via
[01:17:00] shin megami
[01:17:01] tensi 5
[01:17:02] in particular
[01:17:03] okay
[01:17:03] and I'm
[01:17:04] and I
[01:17:05] and I'm
[01:17:05] choosing this
[01:17:06] because
[01:17:06] you know
[01:17:08] almost like I
[01:17:08] said about a
[01:17:09] few different
[01:17:09] series already
[01:17:10] octopath and
[01:17:11] Shining Forest
[01:17:11] most smt
[01:17:13] games have
[01:17:14] relatively
[01:17:15] the same
[01:17:15] battle system
[01:17:16] there's some
[01:17:17] like
[01:17:18] you know
[01:17:19] each one has
[01:17:19] its own little
[01:17:20] quirks and
[01:17:20] twists
[01:17:21] right
[01:17:22] but for the
[01:17:23] most part
[01:17:23] you know
[01:17:23] what you're
[01:17:24] gonna get
[01:17:24] but and
[01:17:25] those quirks
[01:17:26] and tits
[01:17:27] those quirks
[01:17:28] and twists
[01:17:28] and tits
[01:17:29] really make
[01:17:30] the game
[01:17:30] what it is
[01:17:31] so
[01:17:32] why am I
[01:17:33] picking 5
[01:17:34] is because
[01:17:35] the game
[01:17:36] balance
[01:17:37] and the
[01:17:38] expression
[01:17:39] of like
[01:17:39] character moves
[01:17:40] and your demons
[01:17:41] and stuff
[01:17:42] I think is
[01:17:42] what really
[01:17:43] makes 5
[01:17:43] the best
[01:17:50] I just
[01:17:51] said about
[01:17:51] octopath
[01:17:52] and Shining
[01:17:53] Force
[01:17:53] none of
[01:17:54] that means
[01:17:54] anything
[01:17:55] yeah well
[01:17:56] yeah it
[01:17:56] has to look
[01:17:56] good for
[01:17:57] one but
[01:17:58] for two
[01:17:58] the game
[01:17:59] has to
[01:18:00] support you
[01:18:00] doing that
[01:18:01] stuff
[01:18:01] it can have
[01:18:02] really cool
[01:18:03] mechanics all
[01:18:04] at once
[01:18:04] but if the
[01:18:05] game doesn't
[01:18:05] really let
[01:18:06] you use
[01:18:07] them in a
[01:18:08] way that's
[01:18:09] like cool
[01:18:09] then it's
[01:18:10] like okay
[01:18:10] yeah you can
[01:18:11] do some
[01:18:11] cool stuff
[01:18:12] but how
[01:18:12] often do
[01:18:12] no you
[01:18:12] really get
[01:18:13] to do
[01:18:13] it
[01:18:13] Shin Megami
[01:18:14] Tensei 5
[01:18:15] in my opinion
[01:18:16] more than
[01:18:16] any of the
[01:18:16] other ones
[01:18:17] really lets you
[01:18:18] do the
[01:18:18] coolest
[01:18:19] stuff most
[01:18:19] often
[01:18:20] and I
[01:18:21] think that's
[01:18:22] what really
[01:18:22] makes it
[01:18:23] what it
[01:18:23] is do
[01:18:23] you agree
[01:18:24] with that
[01:18:24] I definitely
[01:18:25] agree man
[01:18:26] like a
[01:18:27] good example
[01:18:28] I guess
[01:18:28] would be
[01:18:29] like I
[01:18:30] really love
[01:18:31] Shin Megami
[01:18:31] Tensei 4
[01:18:32] but like the
[01:18:34] combat is all
[01:18:35] from a first
[01:18:35] person perspective
[01:18:37] so you don't
[01:18:37] get to see your
[01:18:38] demons like
[01:18:38] doing cool
[01:18:40] animations
[01:18:40] to attack
[01:18:41] like how the
[01:18:41] Nahobino
[01:18:42] does so
[01:18:43] many cool
[01:18:44] animations
[01:18:44] for those
[01:18:45] Nahobino
[01:18:45] exclusive
[01:18:46] skills like
[01:18:47] arrow rain
[01:18:48] and shit
[01:18:49] like that
[01:18:49] I love
[01:18:50] arrow rain
[01:18:51] yeah you
[01:18:51] don't
[01:18:51] or what was
[01:18:52] the first
[01:18:52] one
[01:18:53] it's not
[01:18:54] Nagasaki
[01:18:55] it's like
[01:18:55] something like
[01:18:56] that
[01:18:57] or I don't
[01:18:58] know
[01:18:58] all the
[01:18:59] cool animations
[01:19:00] that the
[01:19:01] demons
[01:19:01] and Nahobino
[01:19:02] can do
[01:19:02] all that
[01:19:03] shit like
[01:19:03] adds
[01:19:04] so much
[01:19:05] flavor
[01:19:05] to the
[01:19:06] combat
[01:19:07] that you
[01:19:08] wouldn't get
[01:19:08] in like
[01:19:08] 4 where
[01:19:09] it's just
[01:19:10] like I
[01:19:10] use
[01:19:11] Auggie
[01:19:11] and then
[01:19:11] it's
[01:19:12] a poop
[01:19:13] of fire
[01:19:13] or like
[01:19:14] or Nocturne
[01:19:15] where everything
[01:19:16] seems so
[01:19:17] rigid and shit
[01:19:18] that's 3ds
[01:19:18] for you
[01:19:19] though
[01:19:19] so as
[01:19:21] you well
[01:19:21] know we
[01:19:21] talked about
[01:19:22] this before
[01:19:22] I don't
[01:19:22] like 4
[01:19:23] very much
[01:19:24] it's like
[01:19:24] one of the
[01:19:25] few
[01:19:25] megaton
[01:19:25] games I
[01:19:26] straight up
[01:19:26] just did
[01:19:27] not like
[01:19:28] and for
[01:19:28] a lot
[01:19:28] of reasons
[01:19:29] the reasons
[01:19:29] that you
[01:19:30] said
[01:19:30] but like
[01:19:31] also
[01:19:31] just I
[01:19:32] don't
[01:19:32] want to
[01:19:32] get into
[01:19:33] it
[01:19:33] but like
[01:19:33] but
[01:19:34] basically
[01:19:35] it's
[01:19:35] the
[01:19:36] inverse
[01:19:36] of what
[01:19:36] I
[01:19:36] just
[01:19:37] said
[01:19:37] about
[01:19:37] 5
[01:19:37] you
[01:19:38] don't
[01:19:38] get
[01:19:38] to
[01:19:38] do
[01:19:38] the
[01:19:39] cool
[01:19:39] stuff
[01:19:39] very
[01:19:39] often
[01:19:40] also
[01:19:40] I
[01:19:41] think
[01:19:41] the
[01:19:41] game
[01:19:41] balance
[01:19:42] is
[01:19:42] just
[01:19:43] kind
[01:19:43] of
[01:19:43] fucked
[01:19:43] in
[01:19:43] 4
[01:19:44] Shin
[01:19:44] Megabi
[01:19:44] Tensei
[01:19:45] games
[01:19:45] are
[01:19:45] always
[01:19:45] hard
[01:19:45] as
[01:19:46] hell
[01:19:46] and
[01:19:46] that's
[01:19:46] kind
[01:19:46] of
[01:20:04] where
[01:20:04] basically
[01:20:05] one of
[01:20:05] the
[01:20:05] best
[01:20:06] ideas
[01:20:06] in
[01:20:06] the
[01:20:06] world
[01:20:06] and
[01:20:07] if
[01:20:07] anyone
[01:20:07] doesn't
[01:20:07] know
[01:20:08] what
[01:20:08] this
[01:20:08] is
[01:20:08] means
[01:20:09] that
[01:20:09] if
[01:20:09] you
[01:20:09] exploit
[01:20:09] your
[01:20:10] enemies
[01:20:10] weakness
[01:20:10] you
[01:20:11] get
[01:20:11] another
[01:20:11] turn
[01:20:12] so
[01:20:13] if
[01:20:13] you
[01:20:13] have
[01:20:13] like
[01:20:14] four
[01:20:34] dead
[01:20:34] done
[01:20:35] it
[01:20:36] means
[01:20:36] your
[01:20:36] whole
[01:20:36] party
[01:20:37] dies
[01:20:37] too
[01:20:37] if
[01:20:38] the
[01:20:38] hobino
[01:20:38] dies
[01:20:39] yeah
[01:20:39] your
[01:20:39] main
[01:20:39] character
[01:20:40] dies
[01:20:40] the whole
[01:20:40] everything's
[01:20:41] over
[01:20:41] so you
[01:20:42] gotta
[01:20:42] protect
[01:20:42] him
[01:20:43] at
[01:20:43] all
[01:20:43] you
[01:20:43] really
[01:20:44] don't
[01:20:44] like
[01:20:44] that
[01:20:44] I
[01:20:45] don't
[01:20:45] like
[01:20:46] really
[01:20:46] I
[01:20:47] don't
[01:20:47] like
[01:20:47] no
[01:20:47] I'm
[01:20:48] not
[01:20:48] really
[01:20:48] like
[01:20:48] I've
[01:20:48] never
[01:20:49] been
[01:20:49] a
[01:20:49] big
[01:20:49] fan
[01:20:50] of
[01:20:50] like
[01:20:50] the
[01:20:50] one
[01:20:51] character
[01:20:51] dies
[01:20:52] and
[01:20:52] it's
[01:20:52] all
[01:20:52] over
[01:20:53] yeah
[01:20:54] I
[01:20:54] okay
[01:20:55] I
[01:21:07] this
[01:21:07] game
[01:21:07] though
[01:21:07] I
[01:21:08] think
[01:21:08] it
[01:21:08] does
[01:21:09] work
[01:21:09] but
[01:21:11] the
[01:21:11] reason
[01:21:12] why
[01:21:12] press
[01:21:13] turn
[01:21:13] works
[01:21:13] is
[01:21:14] like
[01:21:14] I
[01:21:14] said
[01:21:14] the
[01:21:14] enemy
[01:21:14] can
[01:21:15] also
[01:21:15] do
[01:21:15] it
[01:21:15] to
[01:21:15] you
[01:21:16] and
[01:21:17] that
[01:21:18] is
[01:21:18] necessary
[01:21:19] because
[01:21:20] like
[01:21:20] I
[01:21:20] said
[01:21:20] four
[01:21:21] was
[01:21:21] probably
[01:21:22] a bit
[01:21:22] too
[01:21:22] much
[01:21:23] it
[01:21:23] was
[01:21:23] over
[01:21:23] the
[01:21:23] top
[01:21:23] there's
[01:21:24] other
[01:21:24] games
[01:21:25] Aaron
[01:21:25] like
[01:21:26] soul
[01:21:27] hackers
[01:21:27] 2
[01:21:28] or
[01:21:28] something
[01:21:29] that
[01:21:29] also
[01:21:29] uses
[01:21:29] a
[01:21:30] press
[01:21:30] system
[01:21:30] and
[01:21:30] I
[01:21:31] like
[01:21:31] soul
[01:21:31] hackers
[01:21:31] too
[01:21:31] yeah
[01:21:32] but
[01:21:32] it's
[01:21:33] also
[01:21:33] a
[01:21:37] and
[01:21:37] I
[01:21:38] think
[01:21:38] it
[01:21:38] becomes
[01:21:38] much
[01:21:39] less
[01:21:39] interesting
[01:21:39] you
[01:21:40] need
[01:21:40] the
[01:21:40] fear
[01:21:40] as
[01:21:41] I
[01:21:41] always
[01:21:41] say
[01:21:41] on
[01:21:41] fine
[01:21:42] time
[01:21:42] the
[01:21:42] fear
[01:21:42] is
[01:21:43] the
[01:21:43] fun
[01:21:43] you
[01:21:43] need
[01:21:44] the
[01:21:44] fear
[01:21:44] of
[01:21:45] the
[01:21:45] boss
[01:21:45] being
[01:21:45] able
[01:21:46] to
[01:21:46] absolutely
[01:21:46] destroy
[01:21:47] you
[01:21:47] being
[01:21:48] scared
[01:21:49] of
[01:21:49] everything
[01:21:49] around
[01:21:50] each
[01:21:50] corner
[01:21:51] is
[01:21:51] the
[01:21:51] reason
[01:21:52] why
[01:21:52] being
[01:21:53] so
[01:21:53] threatening
[01:21:53] is
[01:21:54] why
[01:21:54] those
[01:21:54] games
[01:21:54] are
[01:21:55] fun
[01:21:55] if
[01:21:55] it's
[01:21:56] not
[01:21:56] threatening
[01:21:56] the
[01:21:56] press
[01:21:57] system
[01:21:57] doesn't
[01:21:57] really
[01:21:58] feel
[01:21:58] very
[01:21:59] it's
[01:22:00] fine
[01:22:00] right
[01:22:01] it's
[01:22:01] not
[01:22:01] that
[01:22:01] it's
[01:22:02] bad
[01:22:02] but
[01:22:02] it
[01:22:02] comes
[01:22:03] alive
[01:22:03] when
[01:22:03] the
[01:22:03] game
[01:22:04] is
[01:22:04] super
[01:22:04] tough
[01:22:04] would
[01:22:05] you
[01:22:05] agree
[01:22:06] with
[01:22:06] me
[01:22:06] there
[01:22:06] yeah
[01:22:07] so
[01:22:08] yeah
[01:22:08] another
[01:22:08] good
[01:22:08] example
[01:22:09] for
[01:22:09] that
[01:22:09] like
[01:22:09] strange
[01:22:11] journey
[01:22:12] the
[01:22:12] DS
[01:22:13] one
[01:22:13] or even
[01:22:13] like
[01:22:14] the
[01:22:14] redux
[01:22:14] it
[01:22:30] press
[01:22:31] turn
[01:22:31] system
[01:22:31] just
[01:22:32] does
[01:22:32] it
[01:22:32] because
[01:22:33] like
[01:22:33] in
[01:22:33] strange
[01:22:34] journey
[01:22:34] you
[01:22:34] don't
[01:22:34] ever
[01:22:34] really
[01:22:35] feel
[01:22:35] scared
[01:22:36] it
[01:22:36] because
[01:22:37] I don't
[01:22:37] know
[01:22:37] the
[01:23:00] enemy
[01:23:00] is
[01:23:00] like
[01:23:01] oh
[01:23:02] they're
[01:23:03] charging
[01:23:03] their
[01:23:03] magatsuhi
[01:23:04] or
[01:23:05] they're
[01:23:05] charging
[01:23:05] up
[01:23:05] a
[01:23:05] super
[01:23:06] move
[01:23:06] or
[01:23:06] whatever
[01:23:06] you
[01:23:06] can
[01:23:07] have
[01:23:07] everybody
[01:23:07] like
[01:23:07] defend
[01:23:08] because
[01:23:09] otherwise
[01:23:10] you'll all
[01:23:10] fucking
[01:23:11] die
[01:23:11] and
[01:23:11] yeah
[01:23:12] they're
[01:23:12] about
[01:23:13] to do
[01:23:13] some
[01:23:14] shit
[01:23:14] yeah
[01:23:15] charge
[01:23:15] up
[01:23:15] those
[01:23:16] maseratis
[01:23:16] dude
[01:23:18] i love
[01:23:19] driving
[01:23:20] a
[01:23:20] maserati
[01:23:20] god
[01:23:21] yeah
[01:23:21] that
[01:23:21] press
[01:23:22] turn
[01:23:22] system
[01:23:22] is
[01:23:22] it
[01:23:23] never
[01:23:23] feels
[01:23:24] too
[01:23:24] one
[01:23:25] sided
[01:23:25] in
[01:23:26] five
[01:23:27] for sure
[01:23:27] it always
[01:23:28] feels like
[01:23:29] it's
[01:23:29] perfectly
[01:23:30] balanced
[01:23:30] and yeah
[01:23:31] it's great
[01:23:31] it really
[01:23:32] does
[01:23:32] and that's
[01:23:32] that's
[01:23:33] what you
[01:23:33] need for
[01:23:34] that kind
[01:23:34] of system
[01:23:34] it needs
[01:23:35] to be
[01:23:35] tough
[01:23:35] and it
[01:23:36] needs to
[01:23:36] be
[01:23:37] balanced
[01:23:37] which
[01:23:37] obviously
[01:23:38] easier said
[01:23:38] than done
[01:23:39] four doesn't
[01:23:40] get there
[01:23:40] for me
[01:23:40] i'd rather
[01:23:41] take the
[01:23:42] easier ones
[01:23:43] like you know
[01:23:43] i like strange
[01:23:44] journey i never
[01:23:45] played the
[01:23:45] the 3ds
[01:23:46] version i only
[01:23:46] played the
[01:23:47] original
[01:23:47] yeah and
[01:23:48] of course i
[01:23:49] cut my teeth
[01:23:50] on digital
[01:23:51] level saga
[01:23:51] so i really
[01:23:53] really pop
[01:23:53] my cherry
[01:23:54] so like
[01:23:55] that
[01:23:55] that also
[01:23:56] uses the
[01:23:57] press turn
[01:23:57] system
[01:23:58] and you know
[01:23:59] i tell
[01:23:59] them off
[01:24:00] with it
[01:24:00] from there
[01:24:00] but yeah
[01:24:01] it's
[01:24:02] you can't
[01:24:03] beat it
[01:24:03] for my
[01:24:03] eyes
[01:24:04] i'm surprised
[01:24:05] i'm picking
[01:24:05] so many
[01:24:06] like recent
[01:24:07] games but
[01:24:07] honestly
[01:24:08] we've just
[01:24:08] gotten to a
[01:24:09] point with
[01:24:09] the jrpgs
[01:24:10] where there's
[01:24:10] just so
[01:24:11] refined
[01:24:12] where it's
[01:24:12] just like
[01:24:13] when the
[01:24:13] new ones
[01:24:14] come out
[01:24:14] it's just
[01:24:15] like man
[01:24:15] this is
[01:24:16] just the
[01:24:16] best
[01:24:16] we are
[01:24:16] in a
[01:24:17] we are
[01:24:18] in an
[01:24:18] age
[01:24:18] we are
[01:24:18] in a
[01:24:18] really
[01:24:19] blessed
[01:24:19] age
[01:24:19] for these
[01:24:20] we are
[01:24:21] man
[01:24:21] we're
[01:24:21] in the
[01:24:21] second
[01:24:22] golden
[01:24:22] age
[01:24:22] of rpgs
[01:24:23] right now
[01:24:24] we are
[01:24:24] we genuinely
[01:24:25] western
[01:24:25] and japanese
[01:24:28] i agree
[01:24:29] what do i
[01:24:30] got
[01:24:30] oh man
[01:24:31] you
[01:24:31] you don't
[01:24:32] you're not
[01:24:33] even ready
[01:24:33] for this
[01:24:34] he ain't
[01:24:34] ready for
[01:24:34] this jelly
[01:24:40] here we
[01:24:41] here we go
[01:24:42] here we go
[01:24:42] here we go
[01:24:43] pick it up
[01:24:43] pick it up
[01:24:43] like a good
[01:24:44] ska song
[01:24:44] um
[01:24:45] so
[01:24:46] do do do
[01:24:47] do do do
[01:24:47] do do do
[01:24:49] do do
[01:24:50] it's not a
[01:24:50] ska song
[01:24:51] i was just
[01:24:52] doing trumpets
[01:24:53] i just
[01:24:53] that's the first
[01:24:54] trumpet sound
[01:24:55] that came into
[01:24:58] you know
[01:24:59] so
[01:25:03] talking about
[01:25:04] talking about
[01:25:05] horse meat
[01:25:06] um
[01:25:07] call back to
[01:25:08] horse meat
[01:25:09] so
[01:25:11] you guys have
[01:25:12] played the uh
[01:25:12] the south park
[01:25:13] rpgs right
[01:25:14] i have not
[01:25:15] oh yeah
[01:25:16] so the first
[01:25:17] one is a
[01:25:18] pretty standard
[01:25:19] like turn
[01:25:20] based system
[01:25:20] with timed
[01:25:22] attacks
[01:25:23] i'm all in
[01:25:24] i love a
[01:25:24] timed attack
[01:25:26] i
[01:25:26] i discovered
[01:25:27] that i loved
[01:25:29] rpgs with
[01:25:30] super mario rpg
[01:25:31] and that had
[01:25:32] timed attacks
[01:25:34] and ever since
[01:25:34] then i've always
[01:25:35] looked for other
[01:25:36] games with
[01:25:36] timed attacks
[01:25:37] and there's not
[01:25:38] a lot of them
[01:25:38] so when i
[01:25:40] discovered the
[01:25:41] south park game
[01:25:41] had these i was
[01:25:42] like oh maybe
[01:25:43] this is actually
[01:25:44] gonna be good
[01:25:44] not to mention
[01:25:45] i'm a huge
[01:25:46] south park fan
[01:25:47] so it was
[01:25:48] it was a
[01:25:48] fantastic game
[01:25:49] when they
[01:25:50] announced
[01:25:50] the fractured
[01:25:52] but whole
[01:25:52] i was a little
[01:25:53] bit like
[01:25:55] uh i feel
[01:25:56] like they
[01:25:56] had lightning
[01:25:57] in a bottle
[01:25:57] for the first
[01:25:58] one maybe
[01:25:58] they're not
[01:25:59] gonna be able
[01:25:59] to get
[01:26:00] you know
[01:26:01] like dial
[01:26:01] this in the
[01:26:02] same for
[01:26:02] the second
[01:26:03] one
[01:26:04] nope
[01:26:04] they
[01:26:05] fucking
[01:26:05] killed it
[01:26:06] again and
[01:26:06] they made
[01:26:07] it better
[01:26:08] and the way
[01:26:09] that they
[01:26:09] did it
[01:26:10] was they
[01:26:10] made it
[01:26:11] like a
[01:26:12] grid based
[01:26:13] system
[01:26:13] it's still
[01:26:14] turn based
[01:26:14] but it's
[01:26:15] you move
[01:26:16] on a grid
[01:26:17] so like
[01:26:17] your positioning
[01:26:19] matters
[01:26:20] and to
[01:26:22] me i was
[01:26:22] like
[01:26:22] they
[01:26:23] they
[01:26:24] they went
[01:26:25] above and
[01:26:25] beyond trying
[01:26:26] to like
[01:26:26] build upon
[01:26:27] what they
[01:26:28] did with
[01:26:28] the first
[01:26:28] one
[01:26:29] and i
[01:26:31] can honestly
[01:26:31] say it
[01:26:32] is probably
[01:26:33] one of the
[01:26:34] most fun
[01:26:35] combats that
[01:26:36] i've seen in
[01:26:37] recent rpgs
[01:26:39] because yes
[01:26:39] this is an
[01:26:40] rpg you
[01:26:41] do level up
[01:26:41] you do get
[01:26:42] equipment
[01:26:43] there's shops
[01:26:44] whether it's
[01:26:45] the shitty
[01:26:45] walk or you
[01:26:47] know you're
[01:26:47] going to
[01:26:50] shitty chicken
[01:26:54] so and
[01:26:55] it's got
[01:26:55] all all
[01:26:56] the trappings
[01:26:56] of a of
[01:26:57] a amazing
[01:26:57] south park
[01:26:59] like season
[01:27:00] it's it's
[01:27:01] got that
[01:27:01] south park
[01:27:01] humor dialed
[01:27:03] up on 11
[01:27:03] but yeah
[01:27:04] that combat
[01:27:05] is what
[01:27:06] really kept
[01:27:07] me hooked
[01:27:08] like they
[01:27:10] managed to
[01:27:10] reinvent what
[01:27:11] they did
[01:27:12] right with
[01:27:12] the first one
[01:27:13] and then add
[01:27:13] more to it
[01:27:14] and i feel
[01:27:15] like there's
[01:27:16] not a lot
[01:27:16] of games
[01:27:18] that i've
[01:27:18] come across
[01:27:19] that are
[01:27:20] able to
[01:27:20] go hey
[01:27:21] remember how
[01:27:21] you really
[01:27:22] like that
[01:27:22] first one
[01:27:23] well we're
[01:27:24] going to
[01:27:24] take that
[01:27:25] first one
[01:27:25] and we're
[01:27:26] going to
[01:27:26] add to
[01:27:26] it because
[01:27:27] i find
[01:27:28] sometimes
[01:27:30] you know
[01:27:30] i i do
[01:27:31] like change
[01:27:32] in in
[01:27:32] games and
[01:27:33] franchises
[01:27:34] and stuff
[01:27:35] but like
[01:27:35] sometimes i'm
[01:27:36] like i
[01:27:38] kind of just
[01:27:38] wish you do
[01:27:39] the same
[01:27:40] thing you did
[01:27:40] last time
[01:27:41] but just
[01:27:41] give us a
[01:27:41] new game
[01:27:47] system
[01:27:48] so if
[01:27:48] you're
[01:27:48] into turn
[01:27:49] based
[01:27:49] combat
[01:27:50] timed
[01:27:50] hits
[01:27:51] and like
[01:27:52] positioning
[01:27:53] i guess
[01:27:54] is the
[01:27:54] because it's
[01:27:54] not like
[01:27:55] it's not
[01:27:55] a strat
[01:27:56] at first
[01:27:56] i thought
[01:27:57] it was
[01:27:57] going to
[01:27:57] be like
[01:27:57] a strategy
[01:27:58] game
[01:27:58] when i
[01:27:59] seen like
[01:27:59] the kind
[01:28:00] of like
[01:28:00] the grid
[01:28:00] based
[01:28:01] system
[01:28:02] but it's
[01:28:02] it's not
[01:28:03] that at
[01:28:03] all
[01:28:03] it's
[01:28:04] basically
[01:28:04] like oh
[01:28:04] you can
[01:28:05] you can
[01:28:06] use movement
[01:28:06] in turns
[01:28:07] but it's
[01:28:08] also a
[01:28:09] turn based
[01:28:09] game
[01:28:09] that sounds
[01:28:10] that you
[01:28:11] know it's
[01:28:11] funny we
[01:28:12] kind of
[01:28:12] dunked on
[01:28:12] it earlier
[01:28:13] that almost
[01:28:13] sounds like
[01:28:14] system
[01:28:15] too
[01:28:15] that almost
[01:28:16] sounds like
[01:28:16] lunar but
[01:28:17] good
[01:28:18] because like
[01:28:19] you have
[01:28:19] you have
[01:28:20] positioning
[01:28:20] in lunar
[01:28:21] the same
[01:28:21] way i
[01:28:21] don't know
[01:28:22] if you
[01:28:22] ever played
[01:28:22] live a
[01:28:22] live it's
[01:28:23] it's almost
[01:28:24] the same
[01:28:24] so good
[01:28:25] yeah it's
[01:28:26] would you
[01:28:26] compare it
[01:28:27] to that
[01:28:27] almost like
[01:28:28] because
[01:28:28] almost the
[01:28:29] way you're
[01:28:29] describing it
[01:28:30] feels a little
[01:28:31] bit like that
[01:28:31] i also
[01:28:32] very good
[01:28:33] game i
[01:28:34] fucking love
[01:28:35] live live
[01:28:35] i i was
[01:28:38] kind of mixed
[01:28:38] on it i
[01:28:39] i mostly liked
[01:28:40] it there was
[01:28:41] aspects of
[01:28:41] it i really
[01:28:42] did not like
[01:28:43] but like
[01:28:43] overall i
[01:28:45] thought it
[01:28:45] was
[01:28:46] uneven but
[01:28:47] overall
[01:28:47] pretty good
[01:28:48] i think
[01:28:49] the good
[01:28:49] stuff was
[01:28:49] so good
[01:28:50] that it
[01:28:50] was like
[01:28:51] you know
[01:28:51] uh
[01:28:52] good for
[01:28:53] me um
[01:28:53] but yeah
[01:28:54] that that
[01:28:55] does sound
[01:28:55] interesting i
[01:28:56] generally like
[01:28:57] south park humor
[01:28:58] i don't know why
[01:28:58] i've never
[01:28:59] played those
[01:28:59] by the way
[01:29:00] shout out to
[01:29:01] the nintendo
[01:29:02] direct announcer
[01:29:03] who tried
[01:29:04] very very hard
[01:29:05] to not say
[01:29:06] the fractured
[01:29:07] butthole
[01:29:07] because he
[01:29:08] was very
[01:29:09] the fractured
[01:29:09] butthole
[01:29:10] he was very
[01:29:11] very careful
[01:29:12] about it
[01:29:14] yes
[01:29:15] yes
[01:29:15] they're
[01:29:16] very careful
[01:29:16] have you
[01:29:16] ever listened
[01:29:17] to the
[01:29:17] the nintendo
[01:29:18] power podcast
[01:29:19] i heard it
[01:29:21] a few times
[01:29:21] yeah
[01:29:21] they sound
[01:29:22] like robots
[01:29:23] on there
[01:29:23] it's weird
[01:29:24] yeah
[01:29:26] today
[01:29:27] we are going
[01:29:28] to talk about
[01:29:29] the legend
[01:29:30] of zel
[01:29:30] it just sounds
[01:29:31] like a fucking
[01:29:31] nintendo direct
[01:29:32] yeah
[01:29:33] in a podcast
[01:29:33] form
[01:29:33] it's very
[01:29:34] some people
[01:29:35] want that man
[01:29:36] isn't that like
[01:29:36] baked into the
[01:29:37] like the news
[01:29:38] section on the
[01:29:39] switch or
[01:29:39] something weird
[01:29:40] yeah
[01:29:40] you could
[01:29:41] you could
[01:29:41] go there
[01:29:42] and listen
[01:29:42] to them
[01:29:43] sometimes
[01:29:44] they're there
[01:29:44] yeah
[01:29:44] that's my
[01:29:45] favorite podcast
[01:29:46] app
[01:29:46] the switch
[01:29:47] news
[01:29:47] nintendo
[01:29:48] news
[01:29:49] get super
[01:29:50] pod saga
[01:29:50] anywhere you
[01:29:51] can listen
[01:29:51] including on
[01:29:52] the switch
[01:29:53] they're not
[01:29:53] gonna let
[01:29:54] our filthy
[01:29:54] ass on there
[01:29:56] my wet
[01:29:57] wet butt
[01:29:59] um
[01:29:59] should i
[01:30:01] is it me
[01:30:02] or is it
[01:30:03] no it's
[01:30:03] erin
[01:30:03] it's me
[01:30:04] okay
[01:30:05] erin
[01:30:06] give it to
[01:30:07] us
[01:30:07] give it to
[01:30:08] us clean
[01:30:08] give it to
[01:30:09] me
[01:30:09] so my
[01:30:10] last pick
[01:30:11] before the
[01:30:11] lightning round
[01:30:13] the uh
[01:30:14] the mario
[01:30:15] luigi series
[01:30:15] holy shit
[01:30:16] dude
[01:30:16] speaking of
[01:30:17] time kits
[01:30:18] okay
[01:30:19] so
[01:30:19] except for
[01:30:20] like dream
[01:30:21] team and
[01:30:22] like paper
[01:30:22] jam
[01:30:23] because i
[01:30:24] don't fuck
[01:30:24] with like the
[01:30:25] tilt control
[01:30:26] shit or
[01:30:26] anything like
[01:30:27] the gyro
[01:30:27] shit like
[01:30:28] that but
[01:30:29] just the
[01:30:30] the bros
[01:30:30] moves and
[01:30:31] so uh
[01:30:32] listeners
[01:30:32] if you haven't
[01:30:33] the other brother
[01:30:34] listeners if you
[01:30:35] haven't played any
[01:30:36] of those before
[01:30:36] basically it's
[01:30:37] uh just mario
[01:30:38] and luigi
[01:30:39] and you're
[01:30:40] fighting enemies
[01:30:40] uh it
[01:30:42] feels like you're
[01:30:43] playing a mario
[01:30:44] game because
[01:30:44] you'll jump to
[01:30:45] dodge attacks
[01:30:46] you can do
[01:30:47] jump attacks
[01:30:47] onto enemies
[01:30:48] or you
[01:30:49] know do
[01:30:50] your hammer
[01:30:50] moves on
[01:30:51] enemies that
[01:30:51] you can't
[01:30:51] jump on
[01:30:52] shit like
[01:30:53] that but
[01:30:53] then there's
[01:30:53] the bros
[01:30:54] moves where
[01:30:54] you time
[01:30:56] attacks and
[01:30:57] then you'll
[01:30:57] you'll combine
[01:30:58] different attacks
[01:30:59] from mario
[01:30:59] yeah a and
[01:31:00] b and it's
[01:31:01] combined attacks
[01:31:02] from mario
[01:31:02] and luigi
[01:31:03] into like
[01:31:03] different
[01:31:04] different cool
[01:31:04] super bros
[01:31:05] moves like
[01:31:06] a cool
[01:31:06] helicopter move
[01:31:07] or like
[01:31:08] smacking
[01:31:09] luigi with
[01:31:10] a hammer
[01:31:10] like he's a
[01:31:11] golf ball
[01:31:11] into an
[01:31:12] enemy and
[01:31:12] doing big
[01:31:13] dick damage
[01:31:14] and there's
[01:31:15] there's cf
[01:31:17] stars kind
[01:31:18] of kind
[01:31:18] of it seemed
[01:31:19] like they
[01:31:19] tried to do
[01:31:20] a little bit
[01:31:20] like that
[01:31:21] well i guess
[01:31:21] the best part
[01:31:22] of cf stars was
[01:31:22] the combat
[01:31:23] yeah but
[01:31:24] and the visuals
[01:31:25] yeah the
[01:31:26] combat system
[01:31:27] in uh in
[01:31:28] mario luigi
[01:31:29] specifically superstar
[01:31:30] saga dude it
[01:31:31] just they can't be
[01:31:31] beat it's so fun
[01:31:33] i almost picked
[01:31:34] superstar saga
[01:31:35] for the show
[01:31:36] i almost did
[01:31:37] i almost did
[01:31:38] but i i went
[01:31:39] shimmy gummy
[01:31:40] tensei five
[01:31:40] but yeah i think
[01:31:41] and i i picked
[01:31:42] the original just
[01:31:43] because of what
[01:31:44] you said and like
[01:31:45] i said earlier
[01:31:45] i'm not a huge
[01:31:46] paper mario guy
[01:31:47] i don't really
[01:31:48] do i mean like
[01:31:49] i like the time
[01:31:50] attack stuff but
[01:31:51] really it's
[01:31:52] mario and luigi
[01:31:53] games for me
[01:31:54] that's to me
[01:31:55] the most fun
[01:31:56] it's snappy
[01:31:57] yep mainly
[01:31:59] because in
[01:31:59] comparison to
[01:32:00] the original
[01:32:01] paper mario it's
[01:32:02] also 2d on
[01:32:03] the game boy
[01:32:03] advance which
[01:32:04] means it's 60
[01:32:05] frames a second
[01:32:05] by the way if
[01:32:07] the switch remake
[01:32:07] is not 60 i'm
[01:32:09] going to scream
[01:32:10] please god don't
[01:32:12] do that to me
[01:32:13] that new switch
[01:32:14] game looks real
[01:32:15] good yeah it
[01:32:16] does i wasn't a
[01:32:17] big fan of the
[01:32:18] when they first
[01:32:19] showed it at the
[01:32:20] on the direct i
[01:32:21] wasn't a giant fan
[01:32:21] of the art style
[01:32:22] and i said so on
[01:32:23] the show and
[01:32:24] steve and kevin
[01:32:24] yelled at me and
[01:32:25] rightfully so but
[01:32:27] and but i've
[01:32:28] came i've come
[01:32:29] around to it i
[01:32:29] didn't think it
[01:32:30] was bad i just
[01:32:31] thought it was
[01:32:31] like i don't know
[01:32:32] about this but
[01:32:33] i i see the
[01:32:35] light now i feel
[01:32:36] differently should
[01:32:37] i just say one
[01:32:38] final one real
[01:32:39] quick if you don't
[01:32:39] mind yeah we
[01:32:40] each have uh one
[01:32:42] to toss on the
[01:32:42] lightning round
[01:32:43] oh okay okay
[01:32:44] okay i got
[01:32:45] nothing left i'm
[01:32:46] fucking dry okay
[01:32:47] okay okay he
[01:32:48] has a dry butt
[01:32:49] okay i just want
[01:32:51] to say real quick
[01:32:51] lightning round
[01:32:52] dragon quest the
[01:32:53] original dragon
[01:32:54] quest i really
[01:32:55] really really like
[01:32:56] the original and
[01:32:57] it's for the reason
[01:32:59] of you're a single
[01:33:00] solitary person you're
[01:33:01] a party of one
[01:33:03] and i think that's
[01:33:04] great i don't know
[01:33:05] why other rpgs have
[01:33:07] hardly ever explored
[01:33:08] this i mean if
[01:33:09] there's other ones
[01:33:09] out there you guys
[01:33:10] let me know i don't
[01:33:11] think i've ever
[01:33:11] played another rpg
[01:33:13] of that type where
[01:33:14] you were just one
[01:33:15] person like the
[01:33:16] whole game i can't
[01:33:17] think of anything
[01:33:18] either man yeah i
[01:33:19] i really like that
[01:33:20] aspect of turn
[01:33:21] based yeah i don't
[01:33:22] know if i can think
[01:33:23] of another one yeah
[01:33:24] it's it's it's so
[01:33:26] unique and that
[01:33:26] makes it i don't
[01:33:28] know it gives it
[01:33:29] lends a certain
[01:33:30] flavor look i'm not
[01:33:31] going to sit here
[01:33:31] or explain dragon
[01:33:32] quest battles
[01:33:33] this and everybody
[01:33:33] everybody knows
[01:33:34] already right but
[01:33:35] it's just like
[01:33:36] slimes and and
[01:33:38] and toriyama land
[01:33:39] but yeah man i
[01:33:41] really like the
[01:33:42] original dragon quest
[01:33:42] because it's a party
[01:33:43] of one i was
[01:33:45] recently on the
[01:33:46] still loading podcast
[01:33:47] with josh to talk
[01:33:48] about this game and
[01:33:49] i came to that
[01:33:49] realization while
[01:33:51] playing it which is
[01:33:52] something i never
[01:33:53] really thought about
[01:33:53] until this year
[01:33:55] honestly so yeah
[01:33:56] shout out to the
[01:33:56] original dragon quest
[01:33:57] love the party one
[01:33:58] party one my my last
[01:34:00] like real quick one
[01:34:02] to toss out there is
[01:34:03] chrono cross because i
[01:34:04] talk about this game
[01:34:05] all the fucking
[01:34:05] time that's your
[01:34:06] go month that's
[01:34:08] like the way i am
[01:34:09] with gomon that's
[01:34:10] that's that's yours
[01:34:11] it really is man
[01:34:12] it it's just it's
[01:34:14] such a different
[01:34:16] but really fun to
[01:34:19] to tweak with combat
[01:34:20] system basically like
[01:34:21] when it's a character's
[01:34:23] turn you can pick
[01:34:25] between like a light
[01:34:26] medium and heavy
[01:34:27] attack and just
[01:34:27] chain comp like
[01:34:29] a chain attacks
[01:34:30] together build up
[01:34:31] their element meter
[01:34:32] or whatever the fuck
[01:34:33] it's called to where
[01:34:34] you can
[01:34:35] to where you can
[01:34:35] use an element in
[01:34:36] your element grid
[01:34:37] because like your
[01:34:38] element grid is
[01:34:39] there's different
[01:34:39] levels of abilities
[01:34:41] you can use and
[01:34:41] you basically i don't
[01:34:43] know i don't know
[01:34:43] how to explain it
[01:34:44] i'm really fucking
[01:34:45] tired but
[01:34:47] wow
[01:34:50] combat
[01:34:50] each character has
[01:34:51] an element grid of
[01:34:52] like a different i
[01:34:53] guess shape or like
[01:34:55] composition and
[01:34:56] depending on what
[01:34:57] level each time you
[01:34:59] land like say a
[01:35:01] light attack you'll
[01:35:02] build up one to your
[01:35:03] element meter if
[01:35:04] you land a medium
[01:35:05] attack you'll charge
[01:35:06] it up by two and
[01:35:07] then heavy by three
[01:35:08] so you can chain
[01:35:09] any combination of
[01:35:10] like say like you do
[01:35:11] one two three and
[01:35:12] then you had a combo
[01:35:14] or an element meter
[01:35:15] of six or you can
[01:35:17] do like three twos or
[01:35:19] basically you max out
[01:35:20] at six because your
[01:35:21] character has a
[01:35:22] stamina gauge that
[01:35:23] maxes out at six
[01:35:24] it's fuck it's a lot
[01:35:26] man but there's also
[01:35:27] like the different
[01:35:28] elements which base
[01:35:30] elements are like
[01:35:31] spells and abilities
[01:35:32] items that you can
[01:35:33] use in combat and
[01:35:35] like the elements that
[01:35:37] you use also kind of
[01:35:39] affect the battlefield
[01:35:39] in certain ways like
[01:35:41] there's this uh i
[01:35:44] guess like field
[01:35:44] icon in the like top
[01:35:46] left window when
[01:35:47] you're in combat and
[01:35:48] say if you use like
[01:35:49] three red elements in
[01:35:50] a row it'll boost the
[01:35:52] next red element that's
[01:35:53] used and it'll weaken
[01:35:54] blue elements that are
[01:35:55] used that turn as well
[01:35:56] too uh there's a lot
[01:35:57] to it there's a lot of
[01:35:58] weird goofy layers to
[01:36:00] it but yeah it's
[01:36:01] really good because i
[01:36:03] am a guest and i am
[01:36:04] trying to be a good
[01:36:05] good guest in someone
[01:36:06] else's home i will
[01:36:07] decline for once to
[01:36:09] not talk shit about
[01:36:10] chrono cross okay i
[01:36:12] will i will say uh
[01:36:15] get it get it get on
[01:36:16] you okay i fucking
[01:36:20] hate that game
[01:36:24] well erin take us out
[01:36:26] of here before someone
[01:36:26] gets offended
[01:36:28] and by someone i mean
[01:36:30] you everything you
[01:36:30] said is great the music
[01:36:31] is fucking incredible
[01:36:32] that's why i played 20
[01:36:33] hours of it i wanted to
[01:36:34] hear the next song and
[01:36:35] the next song and the
[01:36:36] next song okay well
[01:36:43] no good man it's like
[01:36:45] it's all right you don't
[01:36:46] like it dude it's a good
