[00:00:00] You know, every single time I go to a Casey's, like it's just for like a fountain soda or a energy drink, I am magnetically pulled to the pizza. Like, I will try to walk away from it, but my body just goes to the pizza. I lose control of my body.

[00:00:16] It's the crust, man.

[00:00:19] What a do, listeners! It's me, Aaron. I want to eat a flamingo and gain its abilities. And you're listening to SuperPod Saga.

[00:00:36] Yes, hello. Yeah, that's right. It is SuperPod Saga. And of course, yeah, it's me, Aaron, your host.

[00:00:43] Jerry is away once more. He's got back issues. He's had to bow out of both Retro Rehab and SuperPod Saga for the last couple of weeks and all that.

[00:00:53] But no, we've got a guest. We've got a guest. It'll be like the good old times. Good old original flavor SuperPod Saga.

[00:00:58] We've got the man himself, Tommy, from Tommy's Video Game Ride Along. Hello, Tommy.

[00:01:04] Hello, hello. I'm happy to be here. My wife is on a date with her boss, so I've got some free time.

[00:01:10] Whoa, that's cool. That's cool.

[00:01:12] It's for her birthday.

[00:01:13] Before we get into the intros, I totally forgot to intro my own show, the one people are listening to right now.

[00:01:19] Yeah, for any first-time listeners, this is the podcast where we discuss a different video game topic each week.

[00:01:23] Hey, Tommy, what are we talking about?

[00:01:25] I got to pick the topic. So, the last year for me has been the discovery of JRPGs.

[00:01:31] I don't know why you never told me about them, but they're really cool.

[00:01:35] I know. Yeah.

[00:01:36] So, I want to talk about our favorite JRPG mechanics, whether that's leveling up systems or combat or whatever.

[00:01:44] Because they do cool stuff, you know? No one has mechanics like JRPGs.

[00:01:48] That's true, man. We'll get into all that here in a little bit, because there's a lot of really cool shit that I want to shout out and talk about.

[00:01:57] Shit.

[00:01:58] Yeah, shit. Before we get to that shit, Tommy, go ahead and plug your show for any listeners who haven't heard you before ever on this show or other shows, but yeah.

[00:02:07] I have a podcast now. I don't have time to record like a sit-down podcast like this.

[00:02:12] So, I started Tommy's Video Game Ride Along, which is a podcast I record in my car while driving safely.

[00:02:19] And the whole idea is you, the listener, are in the passenger seat, and I just ramble at you about games journalism-related topics, whether that be like an article that was really good or how something works or a news event.

[00:02:33] And I have a degree in journalism, and I'm obsessed with journalism. So, I spread that to you, and you're forced to listen.

[00:02:41] And it's awesome. I've listened to every single episode so far, pretty much as soon as it comes out.

[00:02:46] And yeah, it's fun to learn about. Before your podcast, I didn't know anything at all about video game journalism.

[00:02:56] But then you started talking about how basically the video game journalism landscape is just like nothing now.

[00:03:05] It's just like people on their own with their own little websites basically being paid for by Patreon and shit like that.

[00:03:12] Yeah, there's a huge misconception, tons of misconceptions about games journalism.

[00:03:16] And I'm going to do my best to write those misconceptions.

[00:03:20] And you're doing a hell of a job. Hell of a job, sir.

[00:03:23] Thank you.

[00:03:23] My hat is off to you. My proverbial hat, it's off.

[00:03:27] Thank you. Thank you.

[00:03:28] Yeah, yeah, yeah. Where can people find your show or your socials?

[00:03:34] Gosh, man.

[00:03:35] You can even talk about your favorite scent of candle.

[00:03:40] I don't have a favorite scent of candle.

[00:03:42] I let my wife pick out all the candles.

[00:03:45] But the podcast is on Spotify and other places, but I'm not sure where because I don't do anything on the computer.

[00:03:52] I just do it all on my phone.

[00:03:54] So I'm not sure where.

[00:03:56] I used to combine the theme song with the episode on a phone app, but they took that away.

[00:04:02] So I just email it to Aaron and he does it for me.

[00:04:05] But I'm on Twitter at Thomas underscore ranking.

[00:04:09] And my last name is spelled R-E-I-N-K-I-N-G.

[00:04:11] And I'm on the Superpod Network.

[00:04:13] I have a channel there.

[00:04:14] So ask me stuff about games journalism.

[00:04:17] Yeah, please ask him stuff.

[00:04:19] And yeah, you can hit up the Superpod Network Discord server.

[00:04:23] It's on.

[00:04:23] Just go to superpodnetwork.com.

[00:04:25] Look for the Discord icon on the top left or top right.

[00:04:29] What does that look like?

[00:04:32] Yeah.

[00:04:33] Hang on.

[00:04:34] Let me pull up the website.

[00:04:35] It's like a little head with eyeballs.

[00:04:37] I'll click on that.

[00:04:38] Okay.

[00:04:38] And then.

[00:04:39] Are you smiling?

[00:04:41] And then, yeah, you can find Tommy's channel.

[00:04:43] Tommy's Video Game Ride Along.

[00:04:44] You can ask him questions there.

[00:04:45] Ask him on Twitter.

[00:04:46] You can leave comments on Spotify now, which is cool.

[00:04:49] So leave him a comment on there.

[00:04:50] Yeah.

[00:04:51] It's pretty great.

[00:04:52] Pretty cool.

[00:04:53] Good job.

[00:04:53] Or just yell really loud.

[00:04:54] I might hear you.

[00:04:57] Tommy!

[00:04:58] The closing of Game Informer Chugs Balls.

[00:05:01] What do you think about it?

[00:05:02] It sucks.

[00:05:23] Well, yeah.

[00:05:24] Let's get to it, man.

[00:05:25] Do you have any video?

[00:05:27] Oh, fuck.

[00:05:28] Any cool RPG systems, mechanics, or whatever?

[00:05:34] JRPGs.

[00:05:35] JRPGs.

[00:05:36] They're different.

[00:05:37] Was there anything that you wanted to start with?

[00:05:40] Yes.

[00:05:41] Just to get the...

[00:05:42] I want to go from the most basic boring to the stuff I'm most passionate about,

[00:05:47] where I'm just going to keep talking for an hour, probably.

[00:05:49] So to start, I want to talk about a mechanic that we kind of all take for granted,

[00:05:55] but is actually really cool when you think about it, which I do sometimes.

[00:06:00] And it's the Pokemon typings in Pokemon, everyone's favorite JRPG.

[00:06:04] Oh, yeah.

[00:06:06] Because think about it.

[00:06:07] Think about it, Aaron.

[00:06:08] Think about it.

[00:06:08] I'm thinking.

[00:06:09] In a lot of games, it's like attack, your attack versus the enemy's defense.

[00:06:14] And that's the stats that go up, is the attack or their defense and your own defense stuff.

[00:06:19] With Pokemon, they're like, what if everything had a type?

[00:06:22] And depending on that type, it could do double damage, half damage, no damage.

[00:06:26] There's dual typings.

[00:06:27] All the moves have typings.

[00:06:28] And if your type matches your attack type matches the Pokemon type, then it does four

[00:06:32] times damage.

[00:06:33] It just adds so much cool complexity and knowledge that you have to gain.

[00:06:38] That's true.

[00:06:39] Not even just like Pokemon.

[00:06:40] There's a lot of other cool JRPGs that lean into elemental weaknesses and shit.

[00:06:45] Yeah.

[00:06:46] I don't know about other Final Fantasies, but I know Final Fantasy IX delves into that quite

[00:06:50] a bit.

[00:06:51] Where insects are weak against ice, I think.

[00:06:55] And then flying enemies are weak against wind for some reason.

[00:06:59] Of course.

[00:06:59] Birds are susceptible to the, oh, no.

[00:07:02] Oh, the North Wind, I don't know.

[00:07:05] But the Shin Megami Tensei series and Persona, the spinoffs and all those, they use elemental

[00:07:12] weaknesses a lot with their combat.

[00:07:13] With what's called the press turn system, where if you strike an enemy's weakness or get a

[00:07:19] critical hit, you get an extra turn.

[00:07:21] And there's a maximum number of turns you can get, though.

[00:07:24] So you can't just keep going and going and going.

[00:07:26] You basically get one extra turn per character in your party, basically.

[00:07:33] And say if you hit an enemy with an element that's, they either repel, absorb, or completely

[00:07:39] nullify, then you'll lose a turn.

[00:07:41] It even goes into how you build your team.

[00:07:44] Because I know what I love doing is trying to get a total variety of, like, I want the

[00:07:48] dual-typing Pokemon with as many different types as possible to cover as many weaknesses

[00:07:53] as possible.

[00:07:53] And I just love building teams like that and trying to plan ahead.

[00:07:57] Then I still haven't gotten used to fairy type.

[00:08:00] I'll never know fairy type's weaknesses or strengths.

[00:08:03] It's just impossible at this age, you know?

[00:08:05] I only know that fairy is weak to poison and steal.

[00:08:09] I don't know what it's strong against.

[00:08:12] Why?

[00:08:13] Why is that the thing?

[00:08:15] Maybe because, like, steel swords cut fairies, and then you poison them with, like, too much

[00:08:21] Xanax.

[00:08:22] Oh, I'm dead.

[00:08:23] I'm a fairy.

[00:08:24] I'm dead.

[00:08:24] That's it.

[00:08:25] That's it.

[00:08:26] What?

[00:08:26] Okay.

[00:08:27] What's on three?

[00:08:29] Let's each say what the most overrated Pokemon typing is.

[00:08:32] Oh, fuck.

[00:08:32] Yes.

[00:08:33] Okay.

[00:08:33] You got it?

[00:08:35] I'm ready.

[00:08:35] One, two, three.

[00:08:37] Electric.

[00:08:37] Fire.

[00:08:38] Electrics.

[00:08:39] Yeah.

[00:08:40] It only...

[00:08:40] Okay.

[00:08:40] So electric is, like, only super effective against water.

[00:08:44] And flying.

[00:08:46] And flying.

[00:08:46] Okay, so am I thinking of something else then?

[00:08:48] Am I thinking of ground?

[00:08:50] Ground type.

[00:08:52] Ground is only super effective against rock.

[00:08:54] Rock and steel.

[00:08:57] Dang it.

[00:08:57] What am I thinking of?

[00:08:58] And I think...

[00:08:58] Let me bring up the type chart.

[00:09:00] There's something that's only super effective against one other thing.

[00:09:03] I think maybe flying?

[00:09:04] Is it grass?

[00:09:06] I think it is grass, actually, yeah, because grass is only strong against water.

[00:09:10] No.

[00:09:11] And ground, though.

[00:09:11] And ground.

[00:09:12] Ground and earth.

[00:09:13] Or not earth rock.

[00:09:14] What am I thinking of?

[00:09:16] Is it?

[00:09:17] I've got the type chart up right now.

[00:09:19] And bug is strong against psychic and dark.

[00:09:22] Poison, maybe?

[00:09:23] Maybe poison.

[00:09:24] Yeah, poison is strong against grass.

[00:09:26] And that's it.

[00:09:27] That's it.

[00:09:28] I don't know what I was thinking of.

[00:09:29] There was something where I was building a team.

[00:09:32] And I was like, wow, this type actually sucks.

[00:09:35] What's the...

[00:09:35] It might have been grass because it has four weak...

[00:09:37] Like fire, grass, grass...

[00:09:41] Grass is the hell I'm talking about.

[00:09:43] I'm sorry.

[00:09:44] It's been so long since I've been here.

[00:09:46] And I've kind of lost my touch, I feel like.

[00:09:49] That's okay, man.

[00:09:50] There's got to be other games that use elemental weaknesses.

[00:09:54] I can't think of any other ones, though.

[00:09:56] Done to the extent of Pokemon.

[00:09:58] That's true.

[00:09:59] Yeah, Pokemon's got so many layers of complexity to it.

[00:10:04] Because there's also Stab, the same type of attack bonus, which adds an extra 20% damage, isn't it?

[00:10:10] I don't know.

[00:10:12] Yeah.

[00:10:12] And then moves that do quadruple damage if your opponent's typing is weak against...

[00:10:19] Or if both of your opponent's typing is weak against that move.

[00:10:22] Or like...

[00:10:25] What are they called?

[00:10:27] Nature's fucking abilities.

[00:10:29] Abilities.

[00:10:30] Yeah.

[00:10:30] It's super duper complex.

[00:10:32] Way more complex than people probably realize unless they play.

[00:10:35] Yep.

[00:10:36] Yes, sir.

[00:10:37] What about like...

[00:10:39] What's the coolest leveling system that you've come across?

[00:10:43] You go first.

[00:10:43] I have to think.

[00:10:45] I think one of the coolest is the sphere grid.

[00:10:49] I knew it.

[00:10:49] I knew that's what you were going to say.

[00:10:52] That's just so cool, man.

[00:10:53] People like to bitch and complain about it being so...

[00:10:56] Oh, it's complex.

[00:10:56] There's so many nodes.

[00:10:58] You move one at a time.

[00:10:59] Damn.

[00:11:00] Well, I mean, first of all...

[00:11:02] Fuck off.

[00:11:04] Yeah.

[00:11:04] First of all...

[00:11:05] Hey!

[00:11:06] Fuck you!

[00:11:07] Second of all...

[00:11:09] You know...

[00:11:09] I mean...

[00:11:10] Yeah.

[00:11:10] Once you really get into it and learn the ins and outs and you kind of...

[00:11:14] It's like after a battle, you rack up SP, I think is what it's called, or sphere points.

[00:11:19] And then once you get enough, you'll gain a sphere level and then you can move one along the grid.

[00:11:24] But like instead of just going like, hey, I got a new sphere level.

[00:11:28] Let's move up along the grid.

[00:11:29] Like just save those shits and move six ways from Sunday down that goddamn grid.

[00:11:36] But...

[00:11:36] That's the one thing that always overwhelms me with JRPGs is these complex systems that you get introduced to and you have no idea if you're doing it right or wrong.

[00:11:47] But once you do figure them out, they're fantastic.

[00:11:51] And I've told this story before, but it's been a year now, so I'll just say it again.

[00:11:56] When you told me about the sphere grid, in my head I was picturing a sphere.

[00:12:00] The grid on the sphere.

[00:12:02] Like a normal shaped grid, but on a sphere.

[00:12:05] So when I actually played Final Fantasy X and it was a grid of spheres, not a grid on a sphere, I was like, oh, I see.

[00:12:14] I see.

[00:12:15] It is gigantic.

[00:12:16] Yeah, it's totally overwhelming, man.

[00:12:19] It's, yeah, it's titanic.

[00:12:21] It's huge.

[00:12:22] But it gives you so much freedom with your characters.

[00:12:26] Because like each character, for those who haven't played the game, each character starts in their own little respective area for like what their, I guess, job or role is.

[00:12:36] Like Oren has a lot of moves for like dealing damage, but also reducing attack or defense or magical defense.

[00:12:42] Blah, blah, blah.

[00:12:42] Riku has like stealing shit and she's quick and fast.

[00:12:47] Lulu has black magic.

[00:12:49] Wakka has a ball.

[00:12:52] And yeah, you can eventually just intersect characters.

[00:12:56] Like I believe Kamari pretty early on or like midway through the game.

[00:13:02] He can like intersect and kind of get a little bit of the thief job in him.

[00:13:06] He can learn like flea and a bunch of other shit that I forget at the moment.

[00:13:12] But shit like that where you can kind of mix, like mix characters into two different roles is just really, really cool.

[00:13:18] Instead of having to like swap between characters all the goddamn time.

[00:13:21] It's pretty cool.

[00:13:22] I agree.

[00:13:22] It's, it's, uh, I, I'm very new to Final Fantasy.

[00:13:26] Uh, I played a bunch of nine and I've forgotten a lot about what happened.

[00:13:30] Uh, but I, I recently got the little Andronic device.

[00:13:33] So I played a bunch of a little bit of Final Fantasy five and that's got the job system.

[00:13:39] Have you heard about jobs?

[00:13:40] Here we go.

[00:13:41] You heard about jobs?

[00:13:43] I have a job.

[00:13:44] You too.

[00:13:45] So, so I, I need your, I need your insight on this as well.

[00:13:49] Because the, the Final Fantasy five job system instead of, and totally like interrupt me, scream at me when I say something wrong.

[00:13:56] Um, the, the Final Fantasy five job system, instead of each character being the class, like the black mage, the white mage, the warrior or whatever, you get to pick who gets to be the class.

[00:14:07] You can just be like this person, you're the black mage.

[00:14:10] This person is the fighter and stuff.

[00:14:12] Right.

[00:14:13] And that was new.

[00:14:14] That was new in Final Fantasy.

[00:14:16] A little bit.

[00:14:17] Yeah.

[00:14:17] Cause like in Final Fantasy five, you can change your class or whatever job or whatever.

[00:14:22] You can change it whenever.

[00:14:22] Yeah.

[00:14:23] Anytime.

[00:14:23] Open up the menu and change it.

[00:14:25] Uh, I think Final Fantasy, like the first Final Fantasy and three also had job systems, but one, like you made your character, like you made your party, you know, you made your,

[00:14:37] your main character is like poopoo doo doo head.

[00:14:39] Your white mage is like, uh, Dingle McCringle and your black mage is fart man.

[00:14:45] Then they were stuck with those jobs.

[00:14:47] And I think three, I don't remember anything at all about fucking three, but yeah, five, you could, you could change classes and that was, or you could change them on the fly.

[00:14:57] And that was gigantic.

[00:14:59] That's like, it's so fucking cool.

[00:15:01] And apparently you could, I didn't get that far into it, but it said like you could have abilities from other jobs while you're a different job.

[00:15:09] So you could have a warrior that could do some white and stuff.

[00:15:12] I didn't know how to do that.

[00:15:14] I didn't get that far, but that sounded really cool.

[00:15:17] And just that it was in such an old game from like 1993 or something that it had that complexity in it already.

[00:15:23] I was like, wow, that's impressive.

[00:15:25] The rest of the game I was not impressed with that.

[00:15:27] That was cool.

[00:15:28] Yeah, I definitely five doesn't have like the best story around, but yeah, the, the, the fucking, the combat and everything else though.

[00:15:37] It's so good.

[00:15:38] The ability to mix and match jobs bleeds into, uh, quite a few other games, but I'll, I'll save that for, for what you're going to say.

[00:15:45] You say your thing first before I, just, just speaking of final fantasies, I've, I've also started playing final fantasy seven and I've gotten farther than I've ever gotten before.

[00:15:56] I have two bosses.

[00:15:59] So I think I'm pretty close to the end.

[00:16:01] So, so, uh, obviously I, I don't think there's a job system in this one.

[00:16:06] So is it just, cause I've only got like three characters that I've played as, but they don't really, it doesn't say like this guy's the black man, this one's the warrior.

[00:16:14] Cause it's, they're not even mages or anything.

[00:16:17] The guy's got a gun on his hand.

[00:16:20] So is it, and, and the materia thing, like I can just be like, this person has cure.

[00:16:25] So is, is there like no job system, final fantasy seven or like no classes?

[00:16:30] Is it just whatever I want it to be?

[00:16:32] Yeah.

[00:16:33] It's pretty much just whatever you want it to be.

[00:16:35] Like in, in seven, the materia system is like, yeah, you can make anybody into whatever.

[00:16:40] Like you can have, you have, you can have every single character learn every single black magic spell and white magic spell, but there's also a lot of other different materials for like summons and other cool attacks and abilities.

[00:16:52] Like being able to like mimic the attacks that enemies do.

[00:16:56] The slot machine garbage, but yeah, I don't get that at all.

[00:17:00] Atifa does that when she does her limit break.

[00:17:02] I don't know what's happening.

[00:17:03] Yeah.

[00:17:04] It's the material.

[00:17:05] It's still kind of fucking cool.

[00:17:06] I, I haven't, I need to replay final fantasy.

[00:17:09] I haven't played seven in a really long time, but the materia system is pretty cool.

[00:17:13] It seems like it has a lot of potential.

[00:17:14] Excited to see.

[00:17:15] Yeah.

[00:17:16] Going back to the jobs though.

[00:17:18] Jobs.

[00:17:18] Bravely, jobs, Bravely Default has a shit ton of them.

[00:17:23] Really?

[00:17:23] Like how many?

[00:17:24] Oh man.

[00:17:25] Oh man.

[00:17:26] Uh, uh, uh, I don't know.

[00:17:28] Let me Google it on my phone.

[00:17:29] They have really cool jobs.

[00:17:31] Like 24 jobs.

[00:17:33] Holy shit.

[00:17:35] Oh yeah.

[00:17:35] Okay.

[00:17:35] So yeah, in the first game, of course, everybody starts with freelancer.

[00:17:39] Yeah.

[00:17:40] Monk, white mage, black mage, knight, spell fencer.

[00:17:44] I forgot about that.

[00:17:46] Bravely Default, I think did the job system the fucking best.

[00:17:51] Like it's, it's the best job system in like any game I've ever played.

[00:17:55] Maybe not so much the first one.

[00:17:57] Cause the first one had a lot of skills.

[00:17:58] Cause, so it was basically like five where after battle characters would earn XP and then JP.

[00:18:05] So like experience points for the base level, which affected like their base stats.

[00:18:11] Yeah.

[00:18:11] They're Japanese points.

[00:18:13] Yeah.

[00:18:14] The majority of your stats are heavily affected by your job.

[00:18:16] So like black mages would have much higher magic than say a monk or a knight or whatever.

[00:18:23] But yeah, yeah.

[00:18:24] After you get to a certain job level, you would learn a different ability for that job.

[00:18:30] The first game had a lot of really stupid skills that didn't fucking matter.

[00:18:33] But Bravely Default 2 really kicked that shit into overdrive.

[00:18:36] And it kind of almost works the same way as Final Fantasy 5 where, so like first off, each job has like a cool passive ability.

[00:18:46] Do you want me just to list them all?

[00:18:47] That would be exciting podcasting.

[00:18:50] Go ahead and do it.

[00:18:51] Black Mage, White, there's an ad.

[00:18:54] Best Buy, Black Mage, White Mage, Vanguard, Monk, Brave Bearer, Bard, Beastmaster, Gambler, Thief, Berserker, Red Mage.

[00:19:05] Ranger, Shieldmaster, Pictomancer, Dragoon, Swordmaster, Spiritmaster, Oracle, Salvemaker, Bastion, Phantom, Arcanist, Hellblade.

[00:19:18] Basically, yeah, each job, like the job that you currently have equipped, you'll have its cool little passive ability.

[00:19:25] Like I think the Black Mage just, oh, specialty is what they're called.

[00:19:29] Oh, yeah, whenever you do the default command, which is like just defending and getting back your Brave points or whatever the fuck.

[00:19:37] Yeah, whenever you do the default command, you recover just like a small portion of MP.

[00:19:44] That sounds basic as shit, but they get really, really, really more like complex when you get there.

[00:19:50] Yeah, so you have the Black Mage equipped, like the Black Mage job.

[00:19:56] You would have its like little pass ability or like specialty.

[00:19:59] And then you could also pick a secondary job, basically just for its like, its commands.

[00:20:06] Like how in Final Fantasy V, you could be like a knight but have like white magic.

[00:20:10] You could be like a sword master who focuses on counterattacking enemy attacks and like drawing aggro and then just blasting them with multiple sword strikes.

[00:20:21] But you could also have like a defensive class set as your secondary where you can like nullify the next attack so you don't take any damage.

[00:20:29] But then you counterattack and just annihilate them.

[00:20:32] And yeah, it's cool.

[00:20:34] It's cool.

[00:20:34] I love breaking games with job systems.

[00:20:37] That's so I'm way into Octopath Traveler 2 right now.

[00:20:42] And that has a job system as well.

[00:20:44] I'm curious to see if you break it.

[00:20:45] It sounds so similar.

[00:20:46] I'm surprised it's not the same developers because so much sounds the same.

[00:20:50] But I am loving so much of Octopath Traveler 2.

[00:20:54] It is doing so many fun things that my brain likes.

[00:20:57] And its job system is one of them.

[00:20:59] There's only eight jobs, which makes sense because it's Octopath Traveler.

[00:21:04] Eight.

[00:21:06] And so everyone has their starting job that you can't change.

[00:21:08] And then as you find special places, you can gain a license to do the other job.

[00:21:16] You can give that to anyone at any time.

[00:21:18] So if you find like the scholar license, you can just give it to anyone whenever you want.

[00:21:23] They'll be part scholar.

[00:21:25] And after each battle, you get job points and you can spend those job points on your job to learn job abilities.

[00:21:34] But what's cool is they keep those job abilities forever.

[00:21:39] So even if you switch to a different second job, they keep those abilities that they gain from that other job.

[00:21:44] So I've got like my starting character who's a warrior.

[00:21:47] He has a scholar ability and he also has a hunter.

[00:21:54] Maybe I don't remember, but you can get four slots for abilities so you can mix and match them however you want.

[00:22:00] It's crazy.

[00:22:01] It's cool.

[00:22:02] It just seems like it should be impossible.

[00:22:06] And I love the battling in Octopath Traveler 2.

[00:22:11] So each enemy has a little shield symbol with a number by it, which you need to attack their specific weakness that many times to break them.

[00:22:23] And there are like eight different weapon types.

[00:22:26] There's spears and swords and bows and daggers.

[00:22:29] And each job gives people different starting weapons.

[00:22:33] But if you give them a second job, they get those starting weapons too.

[00:22:37] So you can have someone that can use four weapons at the same time.

[00:22:40] And then you can break the enemy and then you do double damage until the next turn.

[00:22:44] And so you're just you're like and and you if you you start with with battle points, I think they're called.

[00:22:54] You start with one, which lets you do two attacks per turn.

[00:22:57] But if you don't use any, then you gain one on the next turn.

[00:23:00] So you can you can build them up to do multiple attacks so you can you can time it out to see what their shield is and be like, I've got this guy coming up.

[00:23:08] He's got the spear so I can just save his spear points to stab three times in a row and break him.

[00:23:13] My brain loves it, Aaron.

[00:23:17] I okay.

[00:23:18] Yeah, if you love that game, I feel like you would really like Bradley to fall because it's the same.

[00:23:22] It sounds like because they're both made by Square Enix.

[00:23:25] I don't know if they're made by the same team or not.

[00:23:27] They're not.

[00:23:27] They have like this.

[00:23:29] They're like the same systems because really default.

[00:23:33] It uses like its name sake in its shit.

[00:23:36] So you can use brave points to do like multiple.

[00:23:39] Basically, you can do up to like four up to four moves in one turn, but at the cost of like having to wait that many turns.

[00:23:48] Oh, wait, no, no.

[00:23:49] So so so you can you can default, which is like blocking and you'll rack up brave points.

[00:23:54] And then you can you can then use your multiple attacks in one turn.

[00:23:59] But if you use those attacks without any brave points or whatever, then then, yeah, you'll be set back at a deficit.

[00:24:05] That character will have to wait for like three turns to be able to do anything.

[00:24:09] And they'll be totally helpless and get attacked and probably die because that game is actually pretty fucking hard.

[00:24:14] I don't like that.

[00:24:15] I don't like games that are hard.

[00:24:17] But once you learn how to break the jobs and like which there are so many cool synergies with all the different jobs and bravely default to like one of my fucking favorites was the shield master.

[00:24:32] And there was another I think it's called Bastion.

[00:24:36] So the shield master like doesn't do any damage at all.

[00:24:42] It's its main thing is that it can equip like two shields, like one shield in each hand to have like double the defense.

[00:24:50] It's it can step in place of allies to take damage.

[00:24:52] And it's just like the ultimate tank.

[00:24:54] And when you combine it with there's this there's this skill that the Bastion has that makes it so.

[00:25:03] I think it's like you you double your defense for a turn or you do something that basically you can.

[00:25:08] The more you level up these different jobs and like unlock them and learn about them, you can kind of like in your brain mesh together the perfect killer combo.

[00:25:17] And it's just it's so good.

[00:25:20] It's so fucking cool, man.

[00:25:22] I'd be a go check out bravely default to.

[00:25:24] I will when I finish Octopath Traveler here.

[00:25:28] Hey, hey, Aaron.

[00:25:30] Guess.

[00:25:30] So the developer of bravely default and bravely default to guess what PlayStation 3 exclusive game they develop bravely zero.

[00:25:39] No, it's unrelated to the bravely series.

[00:25:41] Oh, I don't know.

[00:25:43] 3d dot game heroes.

[00:25:45] Oh, yes.

[00:25:46] That was that.

[00:25:47] I don't know what that is.

[00:25:49] You'd know it if you saw it.

[00:25:51] Well, look it up.

[00:25:52] 3d dot heroes.

[00:25:53] 3d dot game heroes.

[00:25:55] Oh, yeah.

[00:25:56] That's that's a game.

[00:25:58] You don't you don't remember this game?

[00:26:00] No, I didn't have a I didn't have a PlayStation 3.

[00:26:04] Hold on.

[00:26:05] Hold on.

[00:26:08] This have a cool mechanic you're trying to bring up.

[00:26:10] No, but hold on.

[00:26:12] I just think you think it was cool.

[00:26:14] OK, go to Google.

[00:26:17] Type in type in 3d dot game heroes big sword and then go to images.

[00:26:26] Oh, yeah.

[00:26:27] I'm looking for that.

[00:26:30] So imagine a Zelda game, but you can make the sword as big as you want.

[00:26:35] That would be.

[00:26:36] Yeah, that's pretty fucking cool.

[00:26:39] Holy shit.

[00:26:40] That one's huge.

[00:26:41] Yeah.

[00:26:41] Big swords.

[00:26:43] I never played.

[00:26:44] Oh, my God.

[00:26:45] This one's the size of a fucking football field.

[00:26:48] Yeah.

[00:26:49] And you can swing it around.

[00:26:51] What?

[00:26:52] OK, that's that's pretty cool.

[00:26:53] Actually, it's only PS3.

[00:26:55] Oh, shit.

[00:26:58] Remake them.

[00:26:59] Oh, oh, oh.

[00:27:01] So Steam World Heist 2 has a job system, right?

[00:27:04] Yeah.

[00:27:05] It's.

[00:27:06] Yeah.

[00:27:06] What the heck?

[00:27:06] Did the first one have a job system?

[00:27:08] No, it was.

[00:27:09] It was kind of like.

[00:27:10] Yeah.

[00:27:11] Each character just had their own baked in class.

[00:27:15] Like there are characters who were flankers.

[00:27:19] There were.

[00:27:20] What the fuck are the names?

[00:27:22] Snipers.

[00:27:23] Assault.

[00:27:24] Shit like that.

[00:27:25] And they would just level up and get like kind of character specific perks and shit as

[00:27:30] they level up, which is kind of cool.

[00:27:31] But so in Steam World Heist 2, there's.

[00:27:35] I think the same number of jobs.

[00:27:37] But yeah, each character like your character's job will change based on what weapon they have

[00:27:41] equipped.

[00:27:42] So like if you equip a shotgun, you're a flanker.

[00:27:44] If you equip a sniper rifle, you're a sniper.

[00:27:46] Shit like that.

[00:27:47] And kind of like Final Fantasy V and all those you can spend.

[00:27:51] You can spend cogs to activate abilities from other jobs.

[00:27:56] So like.

[00:27:58] So like for a sniper, they have this ability called focus.

[00:28:01] Where if you.

[00:28:02] If you haven't moved for a turn, your next attack will do plus one damage.

[00:28:06] And you can combine that with the.

[00:28:08] With the boomer, which just uses a rocket launcher.

[00:28:12] And so you just sit there in the same spot over and over.

[00:28:14] And your attacks will just do more and more damage.

[00:28:18] And you can just blast enemies away and.

[00:28:21] Equip.

[00:28:22] Equip like three fucking grenades.

[00:28:24] So you're just.

[00:28:24] You always have more grenades than you ever need.

[00:28:28] And what is it?

[00:28:28] There's the reaper who just.

[00:28:30] Heist does a lot of damage.

[00:28:32] I kind of.

[00:28:33] I kind of forget.

[00:28:34] I haven't used him a whole lot, but.

[00:28:36] Yeah.

[00:28:36] Job systems are cool.

[00:28:38] I've got Steam World Heist downloaded on my Steam deck.

[00:28:42] Yes.

[00:28:43] I think my brain is broken.

[00:28:46] Does.

[00:28:47] Okay.

[00:28:48] I'm going to.

[00:28:49] I'm going to say a game and you tell me if it has a job system.

[00:28:52] Okay.

[00:28:54] XCOM.

[00:28:54] Kind of.

[00:28:56] They have.

[00:28:56] Right.

[00:28:57] They have classes.

[00:28:58] I don't.

[00:28:59] It's kind of a job system.

[00:29:01] I guess.

[00:29:01] Yeah.

[00:29:02] Okay.

[00:29:03] College football 25.

[00:29:05] I mean, yeah.

[00:29:06] I guess.

[00:29:07] Yeah.

[00:29:08] You play.

[00:29:08] What?

[00:29:09] Quarterback.

[00:29:10] Yeah.

[00:29:11] Linebacker.

[00:29:11] They have abilities.

[00:29:13] Ninja.

[00:29:14] They have abilities.

[00:29:17] Boomer.

[00:29:18] Shotguns.

[00:29:20] I'm just seeing the world in job systems now.

[00:29:24] There's.

[00:29:25] The.

[00:29:26] The Xenoblade games kind of have that too.

[00:29:29] More so the third game.

[00:29:31] But like.

[00:29:31] That job system is kind of a mess.

[00:29:33] Because the jobs don't fucking matter.

[00:29:35] But like.

[00:29:36] In.

[00:29:37] One and two.

[00:29:38] I don't know about X.

[00:29:40] Because like.

[00:29:40] I own it.

[00:29:40] But I haven't played it.

[00:29:41] But one and two.

[00:29:42] Characters would either be a healer.

[00:29:44] An attacker.

[00:29:45] Or like a tank.

[00:29:46] So.

[00:29:47] So that's.

[00:29:47] That's cool.

[00:29:48] Do you.

[00:29:49] Do you know the singer Charlie XCX?

[00:29:52] I'm going to Google it.

[00:29:53] I do not though.

[00:29:56] She's a famous pop singer.

[00:29:58] And one of my favorite tweets.

[00:30:00] I've seen this.

[00:30:01] She posted something.

[00:30:02] And someone commented underneath.

[00:30:03] Hello Charlie.

[00:30:05] Do you like Xenoblade Chronicles X?

[00:30:07] I figured you would.

[00:30:08] Since your name is Charlie XCX.

[00:30:10] I'm just asking her questions about it.

[00:30:14] Oh no.

[00:30:15] I don't play video games.

[00:30:17] But I would assume.

[00:30:18] That would be a good one.

[00:30:20] Hey.

[00:30:21] In Bravely Default.

[00:30:22] Do the jobs affect anything.

[00:30:23] Outside of combat?

[00:30:26] You know.

[00:30:28] I don't think they do actually.

[00:30:31] Wow.

[00:30:31] Because in Octopath Traveler 2.

[00:30:33] They do.

[00:30:34] Hey man.

[00:30:34] I mean.

[00:30:35] Octopath Traveler 2.

[00:30:36] Is newer than Bravely Default 2.

[00:30:37] So like.

[00:30:39] Kind of eat it.

[00:30:40] But it's cool though.

[00:30:41] It's cool though.

[00:30:42] Like.

[00:30:42] Depending on what your job is.

[00:30:44] This is only the main job.

[00:30:45] Not the secondary one.

[00:30:46] You can.

[00:30:46] You can do stuff to like.

[00:30:48] Almost any NPC in the world.

[00:30:50] And so like.

[00:30:51] The warrior.

[00:30:52] Which is my starting character.

[00:30:54] You can go up to someone.

[00:30:55] And hit A on them.

[00:30:57] No.

[00:30:57] X.

[00:30:58] And it'll show their.

[00:31:00] Their difficulty level.

[00:31:01] And what ability they have.

[00:31:02] Which could be like.

[00:31:03] An axe attack.

[00:31:04] Or a bow attack.

[00:31:05] That hits all enemies.

[00:31:06] Or a flame attack.

[00:31:08] And you can choose to fight them.

[00:31:09] Only the warrior can do this.

[00:31:11] And if you fight them.

[00:31:12] And defeat them.

[00:31:13] You can learn that ability.

[00:31:15] To.

[00:31:15] To.

[00:31:16] Put it.

[00:31:16] Into your.

[00:31:18] Your arsenal.

[00:31:19] And you can learn up to six abilities.

[00:31:20] So what I've done.

[00:31:21] What I've done with my warrior.

[00:31:23] Is he can use.

[00:31:24] Swords and spears.

[00:31:25] You've just been killing people.

[00:31:26] I've been killing people.

[00:31:27] Left and right.

[00:31:28] And I've been taking.

[00:31:30] Abilities that he doesn't have.

[00:31:31] So I can use a bow and arrow.

[00:31:32] I can use a tank.

[00:31:33] Or I can use a light and dark attack.

[00:31:36] Or.

[00:31:38] The.

[00:31:39] The.

[00:31:40] Hunter.

[00:31:41] I think he's called the hunter.

[00:31:42] He can catch creatures.

[00:31:43] Like in Pokemon.

[00:31:45] Like any enemy.

[00:31:46] That's an animal.

[00:31:47] He can capture.

[00:31:48] And then.

[00:31:48] Have in his little bag.

[00:31:49] And use them in combat.

[00:31:50] But you can also cook them.

[00:31:52] And turn them into different meats.

[00:31:55] And.

[00:31:57] That started off real.

[00:31:58] That started off like very innocent.

[00:32:00] Like.

[00:32:01] Like.

[00:32:01] Like.

[00:32:01] Like crocodile hunter.

[00:32:03] Steve Irwin.

[00:32:04] Kind of shit.

[00:32:05] But then it turned into like.

[00:32:07] Dark.

[00:32:08] Yeah.

[00:32:09] And.

[00:32:09] And.

[00:32:10] And.

[00:32:10] Each.

[00:32:10] Each creature turns into a different type of meat.

[00:32:13] They don't just turn into meat.

[00:32:15] Like.

[00:32:15] Fish turn into a certain meat.

[00:32:17] And you can go around and see someone.

[00:32:20] And.

[00:32:20] You can.

[00:32:21] Depending on what meat they like to eat.

[00:32:23] You can recruit them to join you.

[00:32:25] By feeding them.

[00:32:26] Meat from the.

[00:32:27] The animals you cook.

[00:32:28] And then you can.

[00:32:29] You can bring them out in battle as well.

[00:32:31] What the fuck.

[00:32:32] Okay.

[00:32:33] It's wild.

[00:32:34] That's cool.

[00:32:34] It's wild.

[00:32:37] But.

[00:32:38] And.

[00:32:38] To make it even crazier.

[00:32:40] The.

[00:32:40] The big difference between.

[00:32:42] Oxopath Traveler 1 and 2.

[00:32:43] Is they have a day and night cycle.

[00:32:45] And your abilities are totally different.

[00:32:47] If it's daytime.

[00:32:48] Or if it's nighttime.

[00:32:49] The warrior at nighttime.

[00:32:51] You can bribe people.

[00:32:52] You can pay them money to get information about.

[00:32:54] Which might find it.

[00:32:55] Unlock a hidden item.

[00:32:57] Or give you a discount at the end.

[00:32:59] Or stuff like that.

[00:33:00] And you just hit the right trigger.

[00:33:01] And it changes from day to night.

[00:33:03] Whenever you want.

[00:33:04] You can just switch.

[00:33:05] What the fuck?

[00:33:06] Yeah.

[00:33:07] Yeah.

[00:33:07] So you can just go.

[00:33:08] Flip flop.

[00:33:08] Flip flop.

[00:33:09] Day night.

[00:33:09] Day night.

[00:33:10] And no one cares.

[00:33:11] Everyone's like.

[00:33:11] I guess the sun's just going real fast.

[00:33:16] Oh.

[00:33:16] By the way.

[00:33:18] Subclassing.

[00:33:18] Like.

[00:33:18] Characters having more than one class.

[00:33:20] That shit.

[00:33:20] I really really like that.

[00:33:22] The Etrian Odyssey games do that a lot.

[00:33:25] Where like.

[00:33:26] You start off making your characters.

[00:33:28] As like one class.

[00:33:29] And you go through their fucking gigantic skill trees.

[00:33:32] And then.

[00:33:33] Halfway through the game.

[00:33:34] They'll be like.

[00:33:35] Oop.

[00:33:35] Pick a second class from that character.

[00:33:37] And you can.

[00:33:38] Kind of almost break those two.

[00:33:41] Like find a.

[00:33:42] Find a class that meshes pretty well together.

[00:33:46] With their.

[00:33:46] Where.

[00:33:47] I made the mistake.

[00:33:49] So in.

[00:33:50] My very first party.

[00:33:52] In Nexus.

[00:33:52] There's this job.

[00:33:53] Or.

[00:33:54] Fuck.

[00:33:54] Job class.

[00:33:55] Whatever.

[00:33:56] Called.

[00:33:56] I think it's called the Zodiac.

[00:33:58] And it's just.

[00:33:58] It's just a black mage.

[00:34:00] It's cast like fire.

[00:34:01] And like ice.

[00:34:02] But it's called like.

[00:34:03] Blaze star.

[00:34:04] And like ice star.

[00:34:05] And shit like that.

[00:34:05] But.

[00:34:06] I made the mistake.

[00:34:07] Of combining the Zodiac.

[00:34:09] With a farmer.

[00:34:09] Farmer.

[00:34:10] And.

[00:34:12] The farmer just.

[00:34:14] Occasionally.

[00:34:15] Does like.

[00:34:16] Status ailments.

[00:34:16] Like you'll occasionally.

[00:34:17] Make the enemy fall asleep.

[00:34:18] Or like.

[00:34:19] You can gather more.

[00:34:20] Gather points.

[00:34:21] So you can get more wood.

[00:34:22] I guess.

[00:34:23] Other than that.

[00:34:24] One mishap.

[00:34:25] Subclasses are cool.

[00:34:26] Yeah.

[00:34:27] Absolutely.

[00:34:28] My favorite.

[00:34:29] Quarterback subclass.

[00:34:30] Is the one that can scramble.

[00:34:33] Because it.

[00:34:34] I'm always one that wants to.

[00:34:36] To escape the pocket.

[00:34:37] So if.

[00:34:38] I'm not a fan of pocket pass.

[00:34:39] Is just because.

[00:34:40] They're more likely.

[00:34:40] To get tackled.

[00:34:43] Hell yeah.

[00:34:44] My.

[00:34:47] You know.

[00:34:47] I think.

[00:34:48] I think it is about time.

[00:34:48] For an ad break.

[00:34:49] Do you want to.

[00:34:49] Do you want to.

[00:34:50] Take a quick ad break.

[00:34:51] Yeah.

[00:34:51] Sure.

[00:34:52] I'll come back later.

[00:34:54] Okay.

[00:34:55] Okay.

[00:34:56] Well.

[00:34:56] Yeah.

[00:34:57] Let them know.

[00:34:57] We'll be right back.

[00:34:59] We'll be right back.

[00:35:00] Listeners.

[00:37:10] Which is extra strength.

[00:37:12] Extra caffeine.

[00:37:13] But they have all sorts of other awesome.

[00:37:15] Kind of out of the box flavors.

[00:37:17] They've got ones like cotton candy.

[00:37:19] Maple bacon.

[00:37:20] And even mint chocolate chip ice cream.

[00:37:23] And they're always coming up with new crossover flavors.

[00:37:27] Like they've done a bunch for Nightmare Before Christmas.

[00:38:29] Have a good one.

[00:38:37] Hey today's episode is brought to you by Daryl's Permanent Sunglasses.

[00:38:41] Have you ever.

[00:38:44] Have you ever.

[00:38:47] Have you ever needed sunglasses.

[00:38:49] But like you're just so sick of taking them off.

[00:38:51] And losing them.

[00:38:52] Because that's what I do.

[00:38:53] I take my sunglasses off.

[00:38:54] And I just throw them to my right side.

[00:38:56] I don't look at where I throw them.

[00:38:57] And I'm like Jesus Christ.

[00:38:58] Where did they go?

[00:38:59] So Daryl's Permanent Sunglasses.

[00:39:02] He takes the ear parts off of them.

[00:39:06] And so you just put it on your face.

[00:39:07] And you can either.

[00:39:09] There's two different packages.

[00:39:10] There's the staple package.

[00:39:11] And the tape package.

[00:39:12] The tape package is easier.

[00:39:14] Where he just duct tapes it onto your face.

[00:39:16] But the staple package is going to stick them to your head more permanent.

[00:39:21] Could you see using this product Aaron?

[00:39:25] You know I actually could.

[00:39:27] So okay.

[00:39:27] I wear glasses because my eyes are pieces of shit.

[00:39:31] I'm very nearsighted.

[00:39:33] And so when we go swimming.

[00:39:35] I have these sunglasses.

[00:39:38] Like little sunglass frames that like magnetically attach to my glasses.

[00:39:42] So if we go swimming.

[00:39:43] And it's bright.

[00:39:45] But I still want to be able to see.

[00:39:46] God forbid.

[00:39:47] I have to put those on.

[00:39:48] But God forbid.

[00:39:49] I fall underwater for like a second.

[00:39:51] My glasses fall off.

[00:39:53] Those frames fall off.

[00:39:54] So yeah.

[00:39:55] Actually I could use the staple package.

[00:39:57] No more having to worry about dropping my glasses.

[00:39:59] Because they're attached to my face.

[00:40:01] Yeah.

[00:40:01] You can just put them under your glasses too.

[00:40:03] And staple them.

[00:40:03] So you can still take your glasses off.

[00:40:06] Actually this just in.

[00:40:07] They also have a welder's pack.

[00:40:09] Where you can get those welder's shields.

[00:40:12] Duct taped to your eyes.

[00:40:13] Ooh.

[00:40:14] So that you don't have to flip the thing back and forth.

[00:40:15] You just have that on permanent.

[00:40:18] Ooh you know what?

[00:40:19] Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep.

[00:40:20] This just in Tommy.

[00:40:21] Yeah.

[00:40:21] Here's a new package for you.

[00:40:23] They have this new one.

[00:40:24] Oh I love new packages.

[00:40:26] You can actually.

[00:40:27] There's like.

[00:40:28] There's extra frames you can put on top.

[00:40:29] Like those clip on sunglasses.

[00:40:31] For like glasses.

[00:40:32] Where you like flip them up.

[00:40:33] And the frames just like stay there.

[00:40:34] Up on your dumb face.

[00:40:36] Yeah.

[00:40:36] You flip them up.

[00:40:37] And then it's just an extra set of eyes.

[00:40:39] Kind of.

[00:40:39] Or like cameras.

[00:40:40] Or.

[00:40:41] You can make them into whatever you want.

[00:40:43] So you can have like.

[00:40:45] You flip them up.

[00:40:46] And like boom.

[00:40:46] There's your sunglasses.

[00:40:47] Flip them up again.

[00:40:48] Boom.

[00:40:48] There's like your blue light glasses.

[00:40:49] Flip them up again.

[00:40:50] Boom.

[00:40:50] Reading glasses.

[00:40:51] You got this like.

[00:40:52] Key ring of.

[00:40:53] Infinite.

[00:40:54] Infinite glasses.

[00:40:55] You're just like oh let me.

[00:40:57] You flip them all down.

[00:40:58] And look at the sun.

[00:40:59] And you are done.

[00:41:00] You are instantly dead.

[00:41:02] Do not do that.

[00:41:04] The sun rays are just so concentrated.

[00:41:07] It's just.

[00:41:07] It's like the.

[00:41:08] The.

[00:41:09] That melting Nazi from Indiana Jones.

[00:41:11] You're like.

[00:41:12] No.

[00:41:13] It's just instant.

[00:41:14] You just look up and fall to the ground.

[00:41:16] You just get poisoned by it.

[00:41:18] Just like.

[00:41:19] Just like a poison Pokemon.

[00:41:20] Or no.

[00:41:21] A fairy type.

[00:41:22] Whatever.

[00:41:24] What's up?

[00:41:26] There's another cool one for you.

[00:41:28] They.

[00:41:28] They also just came out with this cool package.

[00:41:30] Where they.

[00:41:31] So it's the glasses.

[00:41:33] Right.

[00:41:33] That are attached to your face.

[00:41:34] But they also have like the fake nose.

[00:41:35] And fake mustache.

[00:41:36] Yes.

[00:41:36] Yes.

[00:41:36] So it's just constantly stuck to your face.

[00:41:39] Yeah.

[00:41:39] If you can't grow a mustache.

[00:41:41] There you go.

[00:41:42] There's your solution.

[00:41:43] Duct taped onto your face.

[00:41:45] Yeah.

[00:41:46] Don't.

[00:41:46] Don't.

[00:41:47] Please.

[00:41:47] And Daryl is a great guy.

[00:41:49] He's not creepy.

[00:41:50] He's a little hairy.

[00:41:52] But that.

[00:41:52] We don't judge him for it.

[00:41:54] Yeah.

[00:41:55] He's just trying to help.

[00:41:55] This is a good solution.

[00:41:57] I'd like to see you.

[00:41:58] Come up with a better solution.

[00:42:00] Than Daryl.

[00:42:00] No one else has a basket of broken sunglasses.

[00:42:02] Like he does.

[00:42:06] Hey Daryl.

[00:42:07] Do you got a pair of.

[00:42:08] A policeman aviators in there.

[00:42:11] And he's just like.

[00:42:12] Boy do I.

[00:42:12] Ugh.

[00:42:13] All right.

[00:42:15] Maybe.

[00:42:16] And he's just.

[00:42:17] He actually has 20 of them.

[00:42:20] Digging through this wicker basket.

[00:42:22] For like 16 minutes.

[00:42:24] I've got one.

[00:42:25] But.

[00:42:26] One of the lenses is lost.

[00:42:27] It's like.

[00:42:28] I'll take it.

[00:42:30] But I have one eye protected than none.

[00:42:32] Oh.

[00:42:33] So you got like constantly.

[00:42:34] The eye patch.

[00:42:34] He's got the eye patch.

[00:42:36] But it doesn't have the wraparound.

[00:42:37] So you just have to staple it.

[00:42:39] Oh.

[00:42:39] That's good.

[00:42:40] Oh my god.

[00:42:41] Yes.

[00:42:42] So I mean.

[00:42:43] It's just like.

[00:42:44] It's always sunny in Philadelphia.

[00:42:46] Where that one.

[00:42:47] Oh.

[00:42:48] I said the one McPoyle brother loses an eye.

[00:42:50] So he gets an eye patch.

[00:42:51] But he like.

[00:42:51] It's like flesh colored.

[00:42:52] And he paints an eyeball on it.

[00:42:54] You can do that.

[00:42:54] If you lose an eye.

[00:42:55] Just.

[00:42:56] And then.

[00:42:57] Paints an eyeball on it.

[00:42:58] Daryl would love to help.

[00:43:00] Daryl's a great guy.

[00:43:02] Thanks Daryl.

[00:43:18] Hey.

[00:43:18] We're back.

[00:43:19] And my wife is on her way home from her date.

[00:43:21] So we got.

[00:43:22] We got.

[00:43:23] We got to talk about video games.

[00:43:26] Also.

[00:43:26] Also.

[00:43:27] Also.

[00:43:27] Her boss is a woman.

[00:43:28] And they're.

[00:43:29] They're just friends.

[00:43:30] They're really good friends.

[00:43:30] I don't make that clear.

[00:43:32] Okay.

[00:43:33] Okay.

[00:43:33] People were calling in.

[00:43:35] People.

[00:43:36] They're really concerned for your.

[00:43:37] For your well-being.

[00:43:40] Yeah.

[00:43:40] What other points did you have jot it down?

[00:43:41] Or things you had.

[00:43:42] Tales of Arise.

[00:43:44] Aaron.

[00:43:45] Have you ever played a JRPG with live combat?

[00:43:47] Not turn-based?

[00:43:48] I have.

[00:43:49] I've played other Tales games.

[00:43:50] Tales of Symphonia.

[00:43:51] Tales of Vesperia.

[00:43:52] They use.

[00:43:54] I mean.

[00:43:55] It's not.

[00:43:55] Maybe not the exact same.

[00:43:56] But like.

[00:43:57] It's.

[00:43:58] It's.

[00:43:58] I thought I'd hate it.

[00:43:59] It's like a fighting game.

[00:44:00] I don't.

[00:44:00] I don't like live action combat.

[00:44:02] I don't like Devil May Cry combat.

[00:44:05] Or just like hack and slash stuff.

[00:44:07] I don't get any enjoyment out of that.

[00:44:09] So I didn't think I would like Tales of Arise.

[00:44:10] And I loved the combat.

[00:44:12] So let me explain it to you.

[00:44:13] Sit down.

[00:44:14] Grab a seat.

[00:44:15] Yeah.

[00:44:16] Kick your shoes off.

[00:44:17] Stay a while listeners.

[00:44:18] So.

[00:44:19] So.

[00:44:19] Tales of Arise.

[00:44:23] So you have.

[00:44:24] Everyone has a basic attack.

[00:44:25] Which is just like.

[00:44:27] An attack.

[00:44:27] Where you.

[00:44:28] Where you swing your sword.

[00:44:29] Right?

[00:44:29] And you got a little stamina gauge.

[00:44:31] So like.

[00:44:31] You can't just swing over and over again.

[00:44:33] Eventually your stamina gauge runs out.

[00:44:34] And you got to wait.

[00:44:35] To come back.

[00:44:36] And.

[00:44:36] Then you have arts.

[00:44:38] With an E.

[00:44:39] A-R-T-E-S.

[00:44:40] Those are like special abilities.

[00:44:42] Uh.

[00:44:43] Those charge on a little meter as well.

[00:44:45] And so you can unlock.

[00:44:47] Unleash those whenever you want.

[00:44:48] Which is just like.

[00:44:48] If you're the sword guy.

[00:44:50] You can like.

[00:44:50] Launch the enemy up in the air.

[00:44:52] Or you can slam down on them.

[00:44:54] Or you can.

[00:44:54] Do a quick dodge.

[00:44:56] Or whatever.

[00:44:56] It's lots of.

[00:44:56] Lots of stuff.

[00:44:58] And then there's like.

[00:44:58] A super duper special ability.

[00:45:01] Uh.

[00:45:01] Which I don't remember what it was called.

[00:45:02] But.

[00:45:03] Um.

[00:45:03] That's where you combine your abilities.

[00:45:05] With another person.

[00:45:06] It does like.

[00:45:06] A ton of damage.

[00:45:08] Um.

[00:45:09] And.

[00:45:10] So.

[00:45:10] How the.

[00:45:10] How the combat works.

[00:45:11] As.

[00:45:12] Is.

[00:45:13] As you're attacking an enemy.

[00:45:15] They have a little meter.

[00:45:16] That is getting filled.

[00:45:17] As you're doing damage.

[00:45:19] If.

[00:45:19] Enough time passes.

[00:45:20] Where you don't do damage.

[00:45:22] The meter resets.

[00:45:23] And.

[00:45:24] What you need to try to do.

[00:45:25] Is to continue to.

[00:45:27] Do the attacks.

[00:45:28] In such a way.

[00:45:29] That the meter fills.

[00:45:30] Because then when you do the super special ability.

[00:45:32] With a.

[00:45:32] With a partner.

[00:45:33] It's an instant kill.

[00:45:34] It's an automatic kill.

[00:45:36] So.

[00:45:36] But everything has.

[00:45:37] Everything has cooldowns.

[00:45:39] Even your basic attack has cooldowns.

[00:45:41] And the special abilities have cooldowns.

[00:45:42] So you need to like.

[00:45:44] Time your attacks.

[00:45:45] With the special attacks.

[00:45:47] And you can also switch between.

[00:45:49] There's.

[00:45:49] There's four characters.

[00:45:50] All at the same time.

[00:45:51] You're only controlling one.

[00:45:52] You can swap between them.

[00:45:53] At any time.

[00:45:54] You can use someone's special ability.

[00:45:56] Even when you're.

[00:45:56] One person.

[00:45:57] You can just hit on the d-pad.

[00:45:59] And use their special ability.

[00:46:00] Or you can swap.

[00:46:00] So it's a lot of swapping.

[00:46:02] And watching meters.

[00:46:03] To try and fill that meter.

[00:46:04] To time your special ability.

[00:46:05] To do the one hit KO.

[00:46:07] There was.

[00:46:08] One enemy.

[00:46:09] Late in the game.

[00:46:10] Where like.

[00:46:10] None of our attacks.

[00:46:11] Were doing any damage.

[00:46:12] It was just like.

[00:46:13] Like pixels.

[00:46:14] From its thing.

[00:46:16] Because.

[00:46:16] The whole point.

[00:46:17] Was to.

[00:46:18] Build that meter up.

[00:46:19] So that you could do.

[00:46:20] The super special ability.

[00:46:21] And it was a really tough.

[00:46:22] Unique thing.

[00:46:23] It wasn't just like.

[00:46:24] Attack the enemy.

[00:46:25] Until the health is gone.

[00:46:26] Keep doing the attacks.

[00:46:28] And special abilities.

[00:46:28] Like I have to.

[00:46:30] Manage my meters.

[00:46:30] I have to manage my cooldowns.

[00:46:32] And make sure that I don't get hit.

[00:46:34] By attacks.

[00:46:34] Because that's going to make it.

[00:46:35] So I can't attack.

[00:46:36] It was a really fun.

[00:46:37] Combat system.

[00:46:38] That I really.

[00:46:39] Really enjoyed.

[00:46:40] And I never thought I would have.

[00:46:42] Boy.

[00:46:43] Do I have a recommendation.

[00:46:45] For you Tommy.

[00:46:45] This is basically.

[00:46:46] Sonic Spinball.

[00:46:48] No.

[00:46:49] No.

[00:46:49] Metroid Pinball.

[00:46:52] Or Metroid Prime Pinball.

[00:46:53] Whatever.

[00:46:53] But.

[00:46:54] Okay.

[00:46:54] So there's this game.

[00:46:56] Called Valkyrie Profile.

[00:46:58] Valkyrie Profile?

[00:47:00] Yeah.

[00:47:00] So.

[00:47:01] Is that right?

[00:47:02] Yeah.

[00:47:03] Yeah.

[00:47:04] That's.

[00:47:05] That's the game.

[00:47:06] So yeah.

[00:47:07] The.

[00:47:08] In combat.

[00:47:09] Basically you have.

[00:47:10] So there's.

[00:47:11] Four party members.

[00:47:13] And you have each party member.

[00:47:14] Tied to like a.

[00:47:15] Like a face button.

[00:47:16] Like triangle.

[00:47:17] Circle.

[00:47:17] Square.

[00:47:18] X.

[00:47:19] And in combat.

[00:47:21] You basically.

[00:47:22] Time each character's attacks.

[00:47:24] Together.

[00:47:25] To like to.

[00:47:25] To make this massive combo.

[00:47:27] Like say your circle character.

[00:47:29] Does a fire spell.

[00:47:30] And it launches the enemy in the air.

[00:47:31] Then you have your.

[00:47:32] Your ex character guy.

[00:47:33] Come in.

[00:47:34] And do like.

[00:47:34] Two or three slashes.

[00:47:35] On the enemy in the air.

[00:47:36] Then at the same time.

[00:47:37] You have like your bow dude.

[00:47:39] Shoot some arrows.

[00:47:40] Basically just.

[00:47:41] Stack and combo attacks.

[00:47:43] Keep the enemy juggled.

[00:47:44] And then go in.

[00:47:45] And you build up this meter.

[00:47:46] On the bottom of the screen.

[00:47:47] And then once that fills up.

[00:47:48] You can do a super move.

[00:47:50] Which.

[00:47:51] In.

[00:47:52] In.

[00:47:52] In.

[00:47:53] Valkyrie profile.

[00:47:54] It doesn't always insta kill.

[00:47:55] It just does a shit ton of damage.

[00:47:57] And you get more rewards.

[00:47:58] But.

[00:47:59] They'll do like these cool.

[00:48:00] Fucking.

[00:48:01] Anime attacks.

[00:48:02] Like.

[00:48:03] Yeah.

[00:48:03] The main character.

[00:48:04] Hers.

[00:48:05] Like it's all based on.

[00:48:06] Norse mythology.

[00:48:07] So like the main character.

[00:48:08] Does what's called.

[00:48:09] It's like Nibelung Velesti.

[00:48:11] And it's just this huge.

[00:48:12] Fucking.

[00:48:13] Ray.

[00:48:14] And like.

[00:48:15] It's.

[00:48:15] It's.

[00:48:15] It's wild man.

[00:48:16] It's.

[00:48:17] Yeah.

[00:48:17] Valkyrie profile has something.

[00:48:18] Kind of like that.

[00:48:19] And it's.

[00:48:19] It's awesome.

[00:48:20] And same for.

[00:48:22] Uh.

[00:48:23] Uh.

[00:48:24] What is it called?

[00:48:24] Project X Zone.

[00:48:26] It's like.

[00:48:26] Um.

[00:48:27] Oh.

[00:48:27] This is that one.

[00:48:28] That weird one.

[00:48:29] Yeah.

[00:48:29] Yeah.

[00:48:30] They're both on 3DS.

[00:48:31] They're like.

[00:48:32] Uh.

[00:48:32] Tactical RPGs.

[00:48:34] But once you get into combat.

[00:48:35] It's like a fighting game.

[00:48:37] You have.

[00:48:37] Uh.

[00:48:38] Tag team of like two characters.

[00:48:39] I believe.

[00:48:40] Like two or two or three.

[00:48:41] I forget.

[00:48:42] But.

[00:48:42] Yeah.

[00:48:42] You'll just.

[00:48:43] Basically combo.

[00:48:44] And juggle the enemies.

[00:48:45] As much as possible.

[00:48:46] And then yeah.

[00:48:47] Again.

[00:48:48] Build up a meter.

[00:48:49] Do a cool screen clearing.

[00:48:50] Super move.

[00:48:51] And then.

[00:48:53] Maybe they're dead.

[00:48:53] Maybe they're not.

[00:48:54] Yeah.

[00:48:55] That was.

[00:48:55] Those kinds of.

[00:48:56] That was the thing I forgot to mention.

[00:48:57] With um.

[00:48:59] And that does sound amazing.

[00:49:00] That sounds right up my alley.

[00:49:01] If I liked.

[00:49:01] Um.

[00:49:01] Tales of Arise.

[00:49:02] But.

[00:49:03] I forgot to say.

[00:49:04] Tales of Arise.

[00:49:05] Like.

[00:49:05] The combat.

[00:49:06] If.

[00:49:06] If you're not playing.

[00:49:07] And just watching it.

[00:49:08] It is nonsense.

[00:49:09] It is nothing but flashing.

[00:49:11] Magic.

[00:49:12] Swords flying everywhere.

[00:49:13] Like.

[00:49:14] I'll hit a button.

[00:49:15] And a.

[00:49:15] A three second cut scene.

[00:49:16] Will start.

[00:49:17] Where someone's like.

[00:49:18] I'm gonna do some damage.

[00:49:19] And then a giant beam.

[00:49:20] Shoes forth out of their gun.

[00:49:23] And it's just.

[00:49:23] People yelling constantly.

[00:49:25] I.

[00:49:25] I didn't know I would love it so much.

[00:49:27] You definitely need to play.

[00:49:28] Other Tales games man.

[00:49:29] I think.

[00:49:30] I don't.

[00:49:31] I know Tales of Vesperia.

[00:49:33] Is for sure on Xbox.

[00:49:35] I.

[00:49:35] I don't know if like.

[00:49:36] If it's as free form.

[00:49:39] As Tales of Arise.

[00:49:40] Because I think.

[00:49:41] Up until like a certain game.

[00:49:43] They were mostly 2D.

[00:49:44] But.

[00:49:45] Yeah.

[00:49:46] It's a lot of the same shit.

[00:49:47] Like you can control different characters.

[00:49:49] And yeah.

[00:49:49] You can stack moves.

[00:49:50] Or like.

[00:49:52] Yeah.

[00:49:52] Your healer will be like.

[00:49:53] I'm gonna heal.

[00:49:55] And then like.

[00:49:55] Three minutes later.

[00:49:56] After their cool.

[00:49:57] Like charge up animation.

[00:49:58] They'll be like.

[00:49:59] First aid.

[00:50:00] And then you'll heal 10 HP.

[00:50:03] Aaron.

[00:50:04] Yes.

[00:50:04] Has there ever been a JRPG mechanic.

[00:50:06] That was too complex for you.

[00:50:08] Dude.

[00:50:09] Okay.

[00:50:10] So.

[00:50:10] Yeah.

[00:50:10] I don't know if you.

[00:50:11] Listened to the.

[00:50:13] Final Fantasy episode.

[00:50:15] But Final Fantasy 8.

[00:50:16] Has what's called this.

[00:50:17] Junction system.

[00:50:18] And I can't even like.

[00:50:20] Begin to comprehend.

[00:50:22] This fucking system.

[00:50:23] So basically.

[00:50:24] In Final Fantasy 8.

[00:50:26] There are these.

[00:50:27] Guardian forces.

[00:50:28] Which are basically just like.

[00:50:29] Summons.

[00:50:30] From other games.

[00:50:30] Like Ifrit.

[00:50:31] Shiva.

[00:50:32] Quetzalcoatl.

[00:50:33] And all sorts of shit like that.

[00:50:35] But basically.

[00:50:35] You can like.

[00:50:36] You can assign.

[00:50:37] Guardian force.

[00:50:38] To a character.

[00:50:40] And.

[00:50:42] Based.

[00:50:42] On what.

[00:50:44] Stat.

[00:50:44] You assign them to.

[00:50:45] On that character.

[00:50:46] Or something.

[00:50:47] That character will grow.

[00:50:48] A certain way.

[00:50:49] Or like.

[00:50:50] I don't know man.

[00:50:51] It's.

[00:50:52] That shit's way too confusing.

[00:50:54] For me.

[00:50:54] I still don't understand.

[00:50:55] How the junction system.

[00:50:56] Works at all.

[00:50:58] I've.

[00:50:59] Like the game.

[00:51:00] Does have a tutorial.

[00:51:01] And tries to teach you.

[00:51:02] How to use it.

[00:51:03] But.

[00:51:04] I'm just.

[00:51:05] I'm too.

[00:51:06] Like.

[00:51:07] P-brained.

[00:51:07] To understand.

[00:51:09] I have a.

[00:51:10] A similar story.

[00:51:11] Yes.

[00:51:12] So.

[00:51:12] Way back when I was a child.

[00:51:14] I was a little boy.

[00:51:16] Tiny boy.

[00:51:17] In the 90s.

[00:51:19] We took a trip.

[00:51:20] To the Lamar's Walmart.

[00:51:22] Because it was the super store.

[00:51:23] This was before.

[00:51:23] Sue Center.

[00:51:24] Was even.

[00:51:25] A super center.

[00:51:26] Okay.

[00:51:27] And I was like.

[00:51:28] I want to get a Final Fantasy.

[00:51:30] Everyone keeps talking about.

[00:51:31] Final Fantasy.

[00:51:32] I'm gonna get.

[00:51:34] So I was looking up at the case.

[00:51:37] Scoping it out.

[00:51:38] The only one they had.

[00:51:40] Was one called.

[00:51:40] Final Fantasy Tactics.

[00:51:43] And.

[00:51:43] Ooh.

[00:51:43] Okay.

[00:51:44] I was like.

[00:51:44] That's not a numbered one.

[00:51:45] I don't know what this is.

[00:51:47] I genuinely don't know what this is.

[00:51:48] Because there was no internet back then.

[00:51:50] It was just video game.

[00:51:51] But it had the greatest hits thing.

[00:51:53] On the side.

[00:51:54] And I told myself.

[00:51:55] I was like.

[00:51:56] That means it's good.

[00:51:57] If it's got that.

[00:51:58] That means it's good.

[00:51:59] It's a Final Fantasy.

[00:52:00] I'll get it.

[00:52:02] And so I went.

[00:52:04] Mom.

[00:52:04] And I pointed at it.

[00:52:05] And so she bought it for me.

[00:52:08] Mom.

[00:52:09] Mommy please.

[00:52:11] And so.

[00:52:12] On the.

[00:52:12] The car ride home.

[00:52:14] Obviously.

[00:52:14] I open it up.

[00:52:15] And I'm reading the manual.

[00:52:18] And the whole car ride home.

[00:52:19] I'm like.

[00:52:20] Uh oh.

[00:52:20] I think I made a mistake.

[00:52:24] I'm just reading all this stuff.

[00:52:25] And none of it makes any sense to me.

[00:52:28] Nothing is.

[00:52:29] Is making any sense.

[00:52:30] And I try playing the game.

[00:52:31] And I don't know what I'm doing.

[00:52:33] I don't understand anything.

[00:52:34] And I.

[00:52:35] I stopped playing almost immediately.

[00:52:36] And I was so sad.

[00:52:37] Because that was like.

[00:52:38] Buy one game for three months.

[00:52:40] And just go around buying games as a kid.

[00:52:44] Fuck.

[00:52:45] I didn't even know what a tactics game was.

[00:52:47] Yeah.

[00:52:48] I didn't even know what a Final Fantasy game was.

[00:52:51] Not my Final Fantasy.

[00:52:53] There's.

[00:52:54] Oh.

[00:52:55] What is it?

[00:52:55] There's this one game on the 360.

[00:52:57] Called The Last Remnant.

[00:52:59] And.

[00:53:00] What was it?

[00:53:01] When I got.

[00:53:01] When I got my three.

[00:53:02] My very first 360.

[00:53:04] For my like birthday.

[00:53:05] Or Christmas.

[00:53:05] Or something.

[00:53:06] That came with.

[00:53:08] Lego Indiana Jones.

[00:53:09] And Kung Fu Panda.

[00:53:10] And I was like.

[00:53:12] I think I was like.

[00:53:13] 16 at the time.

[00:53:14] I was like.

[00:53:14] Fuck that.

[00:53:15] Garbage.

[00:53:15] I don't want any of that.

[00:53:17] And.

[00:53:17] When I got The Last Remnant.

[00:53:19] Because I was like.

[00:53:19] Ooh.

[00:53:20] Cool.

[00:53:20] Cool RPG Japan.

[00:53:22] And that shit is just so complicated.

[00:53:24] It's like.

[00:53:25] You have.

[00:53:27] Groups of like.

[00:53:28] Five characters.

[00:53:30] And it's.

[00:53:31] Like a.

[00:53:32] Tactics RPG.

[00:53:34] But it's not.

[00:53:35] I don't know.

[00:53:36] That shit's complicated.

[00:53:37] What's.

[00:53:38] What's.

[00:53:38] What's the special thing with Final Fantasy IX?

[00:53:41] Because I don't remember any complex mechanics from it.

[00:53:44] Oh.

[00:53:45] Okay.

[00:53:45] Yeah.

[00:53:45] That's a good one.

[00:53:46] So.

[00:53:47] So.

[00:53:48] The way your characters.

[00:53:50] I guess.

[00:53:50] Progress.

[00:53:51] And learn new moves in Final Fantasy IX.

[00:53:53] Is.

[00:53:53] I don't know what the fuck the name is for it.

[00:53:55] But like.

[00:53:57] Different pieces of gear will have different abilities that either all characters can learn.

[00:54:02] Or like only certain characters can learn.

[00:54:04] Like for example.

[00:54:05] Only BB can equip staffs.

[00:54:07] So only he is.

[00:54:08] Only he can equip those.

[00:54:10] And only he can learn like Blizzaga and shit like that.

[00:54:13] Sometimes you'll come across.

[00:54:14] Maybe like an accessory.

[00:54:15] Or like a.

[00:54:16] Like a piece of armor that might have.

[00:54:18] A black magic spell.

[00:54:19] Like slow or something.

[00:54:20] And only he can learn that.

[00:54:22] But there might be other abilities that other characters can learn as well too.

[00:54:26] So.

[00:54:27] Sometimes you'll have to.

[00:54:29] Like pass around a piece of equipment.

[00:54:32] Have every character learn that ability from it.

[00:54:34] Because there's a lot of really helpful shit that you get from those.

[00:54:37] Like.

[00:54:37] They have this.

[00:54:39] Skills system.

[00:54:40] I guess.

[00:54:41] Where.

[00:54:41] Each skill when equipped.

[00:54:43] Takes up a certain number of skill points.

[00:54:44] So like.

[00:54:45] There's a skill for.

[00:54:47] Nullifying poison.

[00:54:48] Or a skill for like.

[00:54:49] Like.

[00:54:50] Making it so.

[00:54:51] Steel does damage.

[00:54:52] When you try to steal from an enemy.

[00:54:54] And you'll learn those from.

[00:54:56] Like gear.

[00:54:57] And equipment and shit as well too.

[00:54:59] So.

[00:55:00] You're telling me like.

[00:55:01] The armor.

[00:55:02] Had abilities tied to.

[00:55:04] To it.

[00:55:04] Yes.

[00:55:05] But your characters can learn like those abilities.

[00:55:07] After like.

[00:55:08] Oh.

[00:55:09] What's this.

[00:55:10] There's.

[00:55:10] There's some points.

[00:55:11] They'll learn after battle.

[00:55:12] I think it's just SP.

[00:55:14] For skill points.

[00:55:15] After battle.

[00:55:15] They'll earn SP.

[00:55:17] And eventually.

[00:55:17] They'll learn.

[00:55:18] The ability that's on that piece of gear.

[00:55:21] I don't know if I did any of that.

[00:55:23] Another cool thing too.

[00:55:24] None of that sounds familiar.

[00:55:27] There's also the synthesis system.

[00:55:29] Where.

[00:55:30] Basically.

[00:55:31] You.

[00:55:31] Really.

[00:55:32] Kind of.

[00:55:33] Don't want to sell your old gear.

[00:55:34] Because you can synthesize it.

[00:55:35] With other old gear.

[00:55:36] To make better gear.

[00:55:38] And that's really cool.

[00:55:39] Like.

[00:55:39] Oh my gosh.

[00:55:41] What is it?

[00:55:42] Like kind of early on.

[00:55:43] Ish.

[00:55:43] In the game.

[00:55:44] If you.

[00:55:45] Steal from.

[00:55:46] One of the bosses.

[00:55:47] Is you can get this really powerful dagger.

[00:55:49] Early on.

[00:55:50] And then you can.

[00:55:51] Combine it with.

[00:55:52] Another piece of shit dagger.

[00:55:53] To make the butterfly sword.

[00:55:55] Or something.

[00:55:57] That's really cool.

[00:55:58] I think that's really cool.

[00:55:59] I think I missed out on those mechanics.

[00:56:01] Entirely.

[00:56:01] Because I have no memories.

[00:56:02] Of doing any of that.

[00:56:04] Do you think it's possible.

[00:56:05] That I still made it really far.

[00:56:06] In the game.

[00:56:07] Without.

[00:56:07] Knowing what I was doing.

[00:56:10] Possibly.

[00:56:11] I mean.

[00:56:11] They must have learned.

[00:56:12] Something.

[00:56:13] Here's another good one.

[00:56:14] Okay.

[00:56:15] One.

[00:56:16] Really really cool mechanic.

[00:56:18] That.

[00:56:18] I.

[00:56:19] Only.

[00:56:20] See.

[00:56:20] In Earthbound.

[00:56:21] I have never seen.

[00:56:22] In any other JRPG.

[00:56:24] Is like.

[00:56:25] When your characters.

[00:56:26] Get to a certain level.

[00:56:28] To where like.

[00:56:29] Yeah.

[00:56:29] They get to a certain level.

[00:56:30] And you run into an enemy.

[00:56:31] On the overfield.

[00:56:32] Because in Earthbound.

[00:56:33] There's no.

[00:56:34] Random encounters.

[00:56:35] It's all just.

[00:56:36] Enemies on the world.

[00:56:37] You run into them.

[00:56:38] And start a battle.

[00:56:39] When they get to a certain level.

[00:56:41] And you run into an enemy.

[00:56:42] If the enemy.

[00:56:43] Is just.

[00:56:44] Way too weak.

[00:56:45] To where it doesn't matter.

[00:56:46] The game won't even bother.

[00:56:47] With making you fight them.

[00:56:48] I love that.

[00:56:50] Yeah.

[00:56:50] Screen will just flash.

[00:56:51] It'll be like.

[00:56:51] You win.

[00:56:52] And then you get like a.

[00:56:53] Minuscule amount of XP.

[00:56:54] Because I mean.

[00:56:55] Yeah.

[00:56:55] Who gives a shit.

[00:56:56] But that is.

[00:56:57] I fucking love that.

[00:56:59] I wish more games did that.

[00:56:59] Speaking of being a dumb kid.

[00:57:01] The very first time.

[00:57:02] I played Earthbound.

[00:57:04] And.

[00:57:05] It went into a battle.

[00:57:06] Where.

[00:57:07] It's just.

[00:57:08] The screen with the enemy on it.

[00:57:10] Right.

[00:57:10] Yeah.

[00:57:11] Menu.

[00:57:12] I thought the game was broken.

[00:57:14] I thought something was wrong.

[00:57:15] I was like.

[00:57:16] Why.

[00:57:16] This is.

[00:57:17] The battle screen.

[00:57:18] I was like.

[00:57:18] This is.

[00:57:19] Yuck.

[00:57:20] And then I stopped playing.

[00:57:23] I immediately turned it off forever.

[00:57:27] Have you.

[00:57:29] I'm just going to lob it out here.

[00:57:30] Have you ever played.

[00:57:31] Any of the mana games.

[00:57:32] Secret of Mana.

[00:57:33] Trials of Mana.

[00:57:34] Any of those.

[00:57:35] I.

[00:57:36] I.

[00:57:36] I have the first one.

[00:57:37] The first one was Super Nintendo.

[00:57:39] Right.

[00:57:40] Yeah.

[00:57:40] Or Secret of Mana.

[00:57:41] Yeah.

[00:57:42] I have that downloaded on my Andbernick.

[00:57:44] My coworker.

[00:57:45] Says it's his favorite game of all time.

[00:57:48] So.

[00:57:48] I will be playing it eventually.

[00:57:50] I'll agree with him man.

[00:57:51] The.

[00:57:52] There's a couple of really cool things that I like from that game.

[00:57:54] First off.

[00:57:55] The.

[00:57:56] The combat.

[00:57:57] Is.

[00:57:57] Real time.

[00:57:59] Ish.

[00:57:59] Kind of.

[00:58:00] Like yeah.

[00:58:00] You just.

[00:58:01] Run around.

[00:58:02] And.

[00:58:02] Your main dude.

[00:58:04] Cannot use magic.

[00:58:05] But.

[00:58:06] He.

[00:58:06] He.

[00:58:08] Levels up weapons.

[00:58:09] Yeah.

[00:58:10] He levels up weapons way quicker.

[00:58:12] And he can use any kind of weapon.

[00:58:13] But then you have like the one character who can use.

[00:58:16] Offensive magic.

[00:58:18] And then there's another character who can only use like healing and support magic.

[00:58:21] But.

[00:58:21] Another cool thing I like.

[00:58:23] Is that like in.

[00:58:24] You know combat in real time.

[00:58:25] You can pause it and open up the ring menu.

[00:58:27] Then cycle through like spells and equipment and shit like that.

[00:58:30] And the.

[00:58:32] I think it was.

[00:58:33] Your.

[00:58:34] Your.

[00:58:34] Your spells.

[00:58:36] Yeah.

[00:58:36] Yeah.

[00:58:37] Your spells.

[00:58:38] The only level up or increase or whatever.

[00:58:40] The more you use them.

[00:58:42] So the more you use certain spells.

[00:58:43] They'll kind of.

[00:58:45] Evolve.

[00:58:45] And power up.

[00:58:46] And.

[00:58:47] I thought that was pretty cool.

[00:58:48] I think I remember texting you about that like a long time ago.

[00:58:50] Being like.

[00:58:51] Tommy.

[00:58:51] This is the greatest video game ever.

[00:58:53] Yeah.

[00:58:53] That.

[00:58:54] That has a.

[00:58:55] There's like a stamina thing with your attacks too.

[00:58:58] Right.

[00:58:58] Where it does less damage and more.

[00:58:59] Or did not know.

[00:59:00] I remember.

[00:59:01] You.

[00:59:02] You unlocked a memory.

[00:59:03] Of me playing it on the Super Nintendo Mini.

[00:59:05] And.

[00:59:06] I didn't know that was a mechanic.

[00:59:08] So I was just swinging over and over again.

[00:59:10] Just doing one damage.

[00:59:12] Over and over again.

[00:59:13] I didn't understand what was happening.

[00:59:14] Turned it off.

[00:59:15] Never played it again.

[00:59:17] You can also charge your attacks too.

[00:59:19] And I always forget about that.

[00:59:22] I always forget about that shit.

[00:59:24] Is.

[00:59:24] Is Yakuza a JRPG?

[00:59:26] I guess now it is.

[00:59:27] I mean.

[00:59:28] Before it was like more of a beat-em-up.

[00:59:29] But like with.

[00:59:30] No.

[00:59:31] With Yakuza 7.

[00:59:32] Yeah.

[00:59:33] It's definitely.

[00:59:33] It's got a job system.

[00:59:35] So.

[00:59:35] It does.

[00:59:36] It does.

[00:59:36] That's cool.

[00:59:37] Yeah.

[00:59:38] I need to play that one.

[00:59:40] Oh man.

[00:59:41] The jobs are so cool.

[00:59:42] So it's like.

[00:59:43] Instead of being.

[00:59:44] You know.

[00:59:44] Like thief.

[00:59:45] Mage warrior.

[00:59:46] And shit like that.

[00:59:47] You instead have like.

[00:59:49] Oh.

[00:59:49] What is it?

[00:59:50] There's like.

[00:59:51] Homeless guy.

[00:59:52] There's like.

[00:59:54] Riot officer.

[00:59:55] Chef.

[00:59:56] Bottle service girl.

[00:59:57] Or something like that.

[01:00:00] And.

[01:00:00] Then yeah.

[01:00:00] The jobs are really cool.

[01:00:02] Characters are all sorts of cool abilities.

[01:00:04] Yeah man.

[01:00:05] You need to play Yakuza 7.

[01:00:06] It's awesome.

[01:00:07] After I play.

[01:00:09] After I finish Octopass Traveller 2.

[01:00:11] And after I finish.

[01:00:13] Bravely Default 2.

[01:00:14] I'm going to.

[01:00:19] Did you have any other cool shit?

[01:00:20] John it down.

[01:00:21] No.

[01:00:24] I'm new to the JRPGs.

[01:00:26] I.

[01:00:27] Okay.

[01:00:27] And I'm really loving them.

[01:00:29] I love the mechanics.

[01:00:30] I just wish they weren't so long.

[01:00:32] Yeah.

[01:00:32] I feel you man.

[01:00:33] There's.

[01:00:33] There are some short ones though.

[01:00:35] Like.

[01:00:35] If you ever get the chance.

[01:00:36] Golden Sun.

[01:00:37] Is only like.

[01:00:38] Maybe 30 hours.

[01:00:39] Maybe less than that.

[01:00:40] I can play that on the Amber name.

[01:00:41] Yeah.

[01:00:42] Dude.

[01:00:42] Hell yeah.

[01:00:43] The second one is like.

[01:00:44] A little bit longer.

[01:00:45] What's another short one?

[01:00:47] I thought Golden Sun.

[01:00:49] Was the one where you.

[01:00:50] Hold it up to the sun.

[01:00:51] That's it.

[01:00:52] It's different.

[01:00:53] Yeah.

[01:00:54] That's.

[01:00:55] Bok Tai.

[01:00:56] Or Bok Kai.

[01:00:57] Or some shit like that.

[01:00:57] Yeah.

[01:01:16] All right listeners.

[01:01:17] Well.

[01:01:17] That's it.

[01:01:18] That's the end of the show for now.

[01:01:19] Tommy.
